    Today I drive one of the wackiest creations ever to hit the road. It's not a car, it's not a bike and it's not really even a trike. It's the self-tilting two seater three wheel Carver One - and its rare as hens teeth but I finally get to have a go. What will happen?

    I have one of the 3 Carver Ones in Scotland. Its most definatrly not a city car, its natural home is on the fast twisty country road where it excels. Watching Jay drive there he needs more time behind the wheel as hes really not smooth with it at all. Once you have the hang of it you can confidently throw it into corners far faster than most 4 wheel vehicles and there is none of that wobbling back and forth you see in the video, thats driver induced. As for comparisons as to what it drives likes, its like driving a little fighter jet on the road! (But with much lower fuel burn!).

    • @ChristianRThomas
      @ChristianRThomas ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is somewhat reassuring, but I still think the only reason I would ever want to drive one would be if I had designed it. That would then lead to questions about what I did with my life. 😂😂 There is actually a form of suspension that will allow you to roll into the corners (essentially the car body hangs like a pendulum) which presumably would be a bit more natural than this but probably induced jacking (though I don't remember as it probably hasn't been used for 50 years and I think was only ever tried on race cars). But what surprises is that that this sort of hydraulic tomfoolery hasn't trickled down into super-cheap hydraulics in production cars. The hydraulic pump can't be drawing much power when you only have 66bhp to play with, so I would have thought this would be a pretty good template for future development.

  • @39PSIOnTheDaily
    @39PSIOnTheDaily ปีที่แล้ว +93

    As a kid, I remember reading articles about this thing. I think the ironic awkwardness behind this… thing… is that you sit in it and drive it like you would a car, but it turns into corners as a motorcycle would, which is entirely counter-intuitive physics-wise as to how a car would lean going through a turn.
    If you ever wanted to experience a true cerebral-level fustercluck, this’d be the way to do it.

      Indeed.
      DAF's variomatic, better known as Continuous Variable Transmission, was the first commercially successful CVT. It was the only modern automobile technology that was used on public roads BEFORE it was used in racing. In 1993 Williams tested their new car with a CVT and it was significantly faster. Few weeks after testing F1 explicitly banned CVT's for being an unfair advantage.

      Nowdays we literally have so many different cool vehicles. There are new carvers, all kinds of scooters with multiple wheels, quads, polaris slingshot etc. If somebody wants something unique there are options. People like crossovers because they are very practical cause they have slightly higher ground clearance great for clearing high curbes and occasional mountain trip, spacious inside while not being overly long or wide, elevated seating that many people like.

    As a biker and a driver, I would LOVE even a short drive in a Carver. I have ridden something that is vaguely similar; the Piaggio MP3 which is a three wheeler that has two front wheels and tilts via complex hydraulics and that, while odd and counter-intuitive to start with, I quickly got used to that so I don't doubt the Carver is the same.
    I suspect the lack of understeer is the use of a bike tyre as motorcycle rubber is generally sticker and grippier than car tyres, and is probably loaded similarly to a normal bike, so it probably is as grippy as it needs to be.
    Kudos to the owner for buying it and also using it. This is probably one of the coolest vehicles that will ever feature on the channel.

That was the limit for any Carver you could buy then. A couple of weeks after that I bought a Twizy which reaches 90km/h. Also wonky to drive as it can do roundabouts at redicilous speeds because of the very low point of gravity. To be honest the sensation in a Carver is more spectacular. That may be due to the unpredictable leaning while steering. But it was a very memorable experience!

    Oh wow, I completely forgot about this car. I remember it from Discovery's Future Cars special; it seemed interesting but weird. I wonder if this could do a lot better with more sophisticated tilt control.
    That show was a bit trippy, even without weird vehicles like this. Lots of strange editing and scenes that are painfully of that 2007 time. Say, we're only seven years off that show's hypothetical 2030 date.
    Also, you always roll up the windows for our sake, but your audio setup is so good, we can't hear any wind noise anyway!

    Wish I'd had one of these back in the day when I had to get a reliant robin. Granted I was coming off a 1000cc katana and wanted to get my car licence as soon as possible. So the idea was to spend a few months in the reliant and then find a friendly driving school man and pay for a couple of lessons just to make sure I didn't have any bad habits 😁 and then use the driving school car to take the test. Well it all worked out ok and I passed first time out in WoodGreen North London you know where all the big houses are, with the wide streets. It was easy. Sold the reliant and bought another bike😂

    The van version for Pizza Hut? A dozen or so years ago, Domino's in Bath were running a Renault Twizzy. I had a chat with the driver when I saw it in Morrison's car park, and he reckoned that they only let the managers drive it, not the scooter boys. So it wasn't actually used for deliveries.

    James you're probably going to say im bonkers but here me out. You're better than TH-cam. You should be on the TV. Every Sunday evening. 8pm BBC 2. Theres no motoring programmes any more. Keep the format and give the petrol heads what they want. No silly challenges. No economy runs (Fith Gear). Just brilliant, honest reviews of a wide variety of cars everyone can relate to. Even Top Gear became a show about old bangers (in challenges) or £2 million hypercars. Your channel is a breath of fresh air. Sorry for waffling. I hope i see the day when at 8pm im excited to watch "Jayem on Cars"
    Be honest there's a huge gap in the market. You're not doing whats been done a million times before. Your so different and you're bloody good at it.

    Anybody remember the Bond company that made three wheelers back in the 1960's. Now 60 years later we are back at the same situation, with small three wheeler cars with small engines. There was also the Heinkel and Reliant. Very light, small vehicles that had very efficient small petrol engines. The EV equivalents do seem to be ricing themselves out of the market. Lotus made some very nice , light and sporty cars and , at the time, they were not too expensive to buy and run. I think we don't have to make cars so big and heavy when there are such light materials available. In Switzerland there seems to be a following for small vehicles, they may be home made, based on bicycles, which are fine if you dont have steep hills. There is an opening in the market for a cheap, socially acceptable , light, efficient vehicle and there are an array of available engines that could be used.
    We need another Colin Chapman.
