The Juno DS61 and the Juno-60 are two completely different keyboards that aim to do different things. If you want to get into synthesis don't buy the DS61 but if you want an all round keyboard that you can use for almost any gig then the the ds61 is an excellent choice
A transistor organ sends an oscillator through some resistors to give you some vaguely organy sounding tones. You can adjust the volume but that's about it. A filter is a bit more complex but you can probably set it to exactly the same audio signal that comes from a, let's just say, Vox Continental, albeit with less voices. Fuck idk. Basically people stopped making transistor organs because synthesizers did a better job replicating tone-wheel organs.
It’s just wild to me how something so simple and bare-bones can also be capable of such a vast array of strong, convincing sounds. Mad respect to the designers at Roland.
One of the best things I got to do was get TAL's emulation of the Juno 60, and looking through the presets really helped me understand how they worked and also how to reverse-engineer them.
I also have a Juno 60. But many of the presets have been replaced by different patches by the previous owner(s). I have to say that the factory patches are pretty decent compared to most synths from this era.
I had a System 8, and I loved it. Good sound quality, user interface, stock presets, and keybed. I decided to sell all of my vintage and modern synths to go the VST route (for practical reasons only), but I do miss the System 8. Also, there are a lot of really good sound sets available for the System 8 that can be purchased for very reasonable prices.(..for example, check out GEOsynths' "Systematic" soundsets..). Enjoy! 👍😎👍
It was my first polyphonic synth, purchased new from music store. I fell in love with the string and brass sounds, made possible by the thick chorus effect. I thought the organ sounds were exceptional as well. However, I quickly outgrew the single oscillator limitation, and found the chorus too noisy for recording purposes, so sold it after I purchased an new OB8. Given it's synthesis limitations, the factory sound set is excellent.
Fascinating! I sold all my digital shit and plugins and bought a Juno 60 (among others) and overcame it's limitations by midifying and simply tweaking more modern sounds in it. Sometimes it takes minimal adjustment. Ah, and I love to record Guitars through that noisy chorus via a custom external input. No music enthusiast can hear it anyway unless there is no sound going through it.
@@Andronty I've seen a TH-cam video of guitar played through the Juno 60 Chorus. Does sound good. I had a JP-6 for a while, but the LPF was thin and lacking bass. (The BPF and HPF were good). Replaced it with a MKS-80--very punchy low end.
@@Andronty sold your digital shit? Lol. The new Juno x can come 95 percent close to the old Juno without the noise. If you are a decent sound programmer, it is easy peasy.
Yes I remember an old video where the keyboard player was playing Juno-60 but also Prophet-5, so it's hard to tell, especially with studio effects. Do you have a proven source for your statement? I'd love to find out more.
what a beautiful instrument, one of my best friends just loaned me his last night, I can't wait to work on it tonight... ounce I get off work... I will sample this whole board...
Wow the recording is clear enough I can hear the oscillators bleeding through the static when you're not playing... so nostalgic of playing the HS 60 I had in High School.
The Roland Juno-60 patch “Synthesizer Drum” was heard in the 1984-1989 Kids Incorporated versions of the 1983 Kids Incorporated song/theme, Cosmic Wonder and the last Banana dance on/in the last 2019 The Amazing World of Gumball episode.
I remember like it was yesterday ! My first synth was actually Juno Alpha 2 (1985-86). It already came with an aftertouch and velocity-responsive keyboard, which was a huge improvement from Juno 60 and 106, although some say that the sound was somewhat thinner (I didn't notice much of a difference to be honest, and I tried hard...). Those Rolands are Classics with Jupiter 8 at the crown !

And that's just side "A" from the JUNO-60 preset program cassette tape. I made the mistake of doing the procedure of initializating both sides A and B, thinking that's what I was supposed to do when I first got my JUNO. Got stuck with the side "B" presets instead, never realizing my mistake until 20 years later. Was so used to my side "B" presets the way they were, never interested in trying out side "A".
There were crackles of distortion in this recording that weren't part of the Juno 60's sound. Great demo though. I remember those patches. I'm a bit late to the party, but hey.
I’m impressed with these factory presets. I’m used to hearing sounds that are so basic and bland that it would be a crime to even consider using them in an actual song, but these are very tasteful and musical.
Back then people had talent. Pet shop boys and Depeche Mode (and their producers) could convert raw, thin sounds of a fairlight or emulator into fat, processed sounds. Nowadays, we have 1000s of rich presets and many people still can’t make anything to save them. Shame shame shame.
12:00 The UFO Effect is used for The Jeep Grrlz tracks like Le Fist, Bimbotica, DJ Groopeez, And Even Live In Frankfurt. The Synthesizer Drums were also used in these tracks as well. Listen to these and you might hear the difference. Also I heard a Juno 60 in a track called Dillusions by Organik from Honeydipped Records.

They should have recreated these inside the Deepmind instead of just all the showboating patches so I don`t have to start from scratch to get more Juno like sounds
Thats honestly one of the best Organ emulations I've ever heard out of a synth
I agree. very good organ. The DX7 does have a better pipe sound but the Juno does very good electric/rock organ sounds.
He also plays it like Hammond organ... makes a big difference. ;-)
Listen to the Memorymoog organ preset...wow.
the filter self oscillates then you can use chorus or click both choruses on for a mod
But isn't an organ just a synth with bad programming?
I was lucky enough to have the guy who programmed the factory patches as a teacher in college. Taught me a lot about synthesis.
Jake Martinez where can I buy this is it very similar to the Roland JUNO DS61?
Who is he?
Yes, who is he? Where does he teaches?
The Juno DS61 and the Juno-60 are two completely different keyboards that aim to do different things. If you want to get into synthesis don't buy the DS61 but if you want an all round keyboard that you can use for almost any gig then the the ds61 is an excellent choice
@@Zealous_Tutorials But the DS61 has 4 partial structure, decent filter, envelopes, lfos, and cool fx!
I was honestly shocked at how fucking good the Organ 1 sound is.
Holy crap.
Electronically it's just a much more versatile and complex transistor organ.
@wetbadger What does that statement mean?
A transistor organ sends an oscillator through some resistors to give you some vaguely organy sounding tones. You can adjust the volume but that's about it. A filter is a bit more complex but you can probably set it to exactly the same audio signal that comes from a, let's just say, Vox Continental, albeit with less voices. Fuck idk. Basically people stopped making transistor organs because synthesizers did a better job replicating tone-wheel organs.
And that's why I'm content having a synth and a transistor organ (farfisa clone from 69)...transistors have their own garage band sound.
It’s just wild to me how something so simple and bare-bones can also be capable of such a vast array of strong, convincing sounds. Mad respect to the designers at Roland.
This was my first polyphonic synth. Bought it new in 1982 and got the midi box in 83. Brilliant piece of kit!
Me TOO!!! ;-) Still have it! ;-)
The Roland Juno-60 patch "Popcorn" was heard in the Silence 2/Gordon Grody song "The Beast in Me" (1984).
A plenty of Czechoslovakian 80's songs were composed with this legendary machine! I love it!
That mellow piano sound man
Nothing can possibly beat the richness of a classic 80s synthesizer.
@Brandon Krause I‘d take a Juno 60 over a Virus C any day
Japanese sound is my favorite like Roland’s. Oberheim next. Oberheim is nice but a bit harsh and cheesy. Like those Van Halen things.
The Roland Juno-60 patch "Popcorn" was heard in the song "Take Me Home" (1985).
One of the best things I got to do was get TAL's emulation of the Juno 60, and looking through the presets really helped me understand how they worked and also how to reverse-engineer them.
Love it and that guy is a very capable keyboard player
The Juno 60 sounds very organic.
LuckyLook Yes great at synth sounds but only emulates real instruments not it’s strong point.
Actually emulating as opposed to sampling is exactly why we love these old analog synths. This makes their sound stand out as being unique.
I also have a Juno 60. But many of the presets have been replaced by different patches by the previous owner(s). I have to say that the factory patches are pretty decent compared to most synths from this era.
You can download the tape file in wav format and upload it back to the Juno60.
Michael Langley I need to try this again. My old tape doesn’t seem to be working.
It seems like Roland synths had better preset patches than Yamaha and Korg in that era.
I never thought I would want some factory patches so much 🤣. But I have a 106 and that would sound different if work at all.
what the hell i had no idea it was possible to get such a good sounding hammond out of a subtractive synth
I had one of these for years, sold it after about 20 yrs. Still miss it.
By mine. 4 000$
beautiful synth. When I was young I used to diss this for the DX7 which was the new kid on the block. How wrong I was
Meant as a low-end, entry-level synthesizer, but still, a machine with a lot of class. Awesome.
It cost 1900$ back in 1983.
+Ignacio Mata Which was entry level for a professional musician quality synth at the time.
Compare that to 6 and 8 grand... 1900 for a quality synth in 83 is practically a budget model.
1900$ adjusted to inflation is 4700$ today. I'd really love to have your budgets to spend on gear.
i'm just saying for the early 80s. i wish i had that budget. i'm stuck with an akai mpk and vsts with my 11$ an hour ass
Beautiful. Given up on my dream of owning a Juno 60 for now, and instead am getting a System 8 into which I will put the Juno 60 option.

However, it's not even close technology-wise. The Genesis' sound chip used FM synthesis. But the Juno-60 can sound very FM-like at times, I guess.
