Hey Levy, my girlfriend bought me your book for my birthday and I've been reading it for the last few days. Supposedly the book helps the most for players going from 0 to 1300 elo. I'm currently rated 1450 elo and I'd like to say that all the QR Codes, the way it's written and the images (everything) the experience is fantastic and I'm having a blast reading this. The usual fun facts that sometimes appear are really cool and I wasn't expecting those ahah! Although I haven't read it in its entirety yet it's already helping me in some ways... which I wasn't expecting but it's a fun surprise. I'm loving the book and I wanted to share this, not only for you but for future people that are thinking on buying the book. Many thanks and I'm waiting for the next one (I hope it comes soon)! Love from Portugal :)
They tried this with FIFA, a bunch of the best European clubs wanted to create the "super cup" as an alternative champions league, but FIFA wouldn't allow them to play the champions league if they did and that would cost them way too much money.
@duplicate-l1y ohh yeah like baseball. Two leagues merged under one affiliation. The players in one league don't get to play the players in the other league in the regular season, but they do in the world series. At least for the first like 100 years. Then gradually they start interleague play. The format will be determined by who is white/black ... If two players from opposing leagues are matched up, they will play by the league rules of whomever has the White pieces (if White puece player is a Freestyle player, it will be a Freestyle game and vice versa)
9:32 actually you are allowed to create your own chess association and this already almost happened in football with the "Super League". FIDE currently has a monopoly position, which is tolerated because it makes sense to have a single governing body, but it is certainly not protected against competitors by law
The fans' perspective is different here though. I think chess fans want to see exciting tournaments and their sport valued rightly whereas with the Super League there were large-scale protests by fans against the idea (and greed, in general)
Hey levy i know you primarily focus on chess recaps and beginner lessons but i really love the type of content where you speak your mind and give your thoughts on stuff love this style of content bud
It is not that easy... FIDE is not just organising Super Tournaments. Those, yes if someone like Carlsen starts his own federation, can easily manage. FIDE also organises (or is at least involved in scheduling and rating) almost every low to mid level tournament, which is not easy to organise and manage for any new org, regardless of who the top sponsor is. That requires infrastructure, man power which is difficult to rally and build within a few years.
I've thought for a while that FIDE making their organization name prominent in the events is actually undermining their status. It implies there can be others. If you call an even simply the World Championship, than later you say organized by FIDE or something, you're elevating the status of the event, inhibiting others from making other WC's, and at the same time advertising your organization. Trying to elevate the organization *over* the event won't serve either purpose as well.
Telling players where they can play is illegal monopolistic behavior. FIDE gets no control over player lives. We are not slaves to FIDE, meant to be bent to their will.
as a football fan there were similar issues with FIFA and the superleague project that FIFA tried to shut it down because it was going to replace the most premium league in Europe the champions League
Great post Levy I love Fischer Random it is immensely testing for positioning and responses even though the lottery grid positiions can make some extremely unusual games
IMO chess is never going to be a mass spectator sport. The most popular sports are simple and spectacular, and chess can never be either of those things.
It actually did become a “mass spectator” sport in Norway, after Magnus Carlsen entered the scene. Although they only watch on TV, not on big stadiums…
@@pbholmenyes and same goes for india after chess boom in covid but its not being broadcasted on tv still norway provides very good coverage of wc rapid and blitz
Such thing already happened in football: a couple of European top teams teamed up against UEFA, because their wanted their own Champions League, for themselves, and for even more money. They were pretty much antagonized by UEFA. Also, Kasparov has created the The Professional Chess Association which existed for 3-4 years until its demise.
Similar thing happened in darts too, PDC split from BDO taking the top players and starting their own world championship, BDO eventually went bust because PDC made all the money.
UEFA wants to create their own “super league”. This season, the format has changed. From playing 6 games to 8 games. Slowly, they will change it again. It will become UEFA super league
" I can’t remember the opening moves of the London " etc is actually the beauty about freestyle chess since it’s not about memorisation. Freestyle chess is easier than normal chess especially for newbies and amateurs you dont have to remember certain opening lines and you don’t auto lose bec you can’t memorise the enemy opening. Its much less about preparation which is a good thing
Regardless, the way live chess is televised is pretty woeful. There is no understood standardised format the way there is in tennis. This puts a lot of people who aren't chess experts off. 1. Having a clear and stable view of the current board position at all times 2. Keeping commentary on point, so that it mirrors what the players are doing in the moment. 3. Keeping commentary sterile during rapid move sequences Too often during the WCC you'd have commentators chatting about something irrelevant and 3 or 4 moves were played, with no view of the board. That's like cutting away from the tennis court during the end of a match point rally and chatting about where they went on holiday last year. The format and commentary protocols need serious fixing before chess will ever reach a wider audience.
This can finally be the start of FIDE downfall and a new system where more players would be able to make a living. Like tennis' open era or darts' PDC.
There can be cooperation between the FIDE and Free Style with regard to fixing a suitable annual calendar for conducting the competitions so that players from both sides are not affected and Fisher random to thrive
I agree but I agree with FIDE’s stance on the use of “World Championship.” Last week when I saw that Magnus became world champion in something, I was confused. Having so many “world championships, will dilute the value of the FIDE world championship.
@@AnjelLee-f8c Yes it is bit confusing for some of the public who may find it difficult to distinguish! In India when chess was played in the early years pawns can not move two steps from the starting position. The games were very slow but later it was changed. Since the computers have almost destroyed the normal chess and any one can easily copy the openings etc. it is only natural that we need to encourage the Chess 960 that can reveal the beauty of human intuition. Perhaps we need to educate the common public about the existence of two different world titles!
Chess would be much more "viewer friendly" with a move time limit. Give each player 5 minutes per move, maximum, on top of the overall game clock/increment.
It already exists but it’s barely used, it’s called delay. Set time to think each move but after that expires, the actual clock counts down. It’s actually a much fairer time control since “classical” games get decided in time trouble rather than the position.
I missed the memo. Has FIDE ever been not an entity everyone has to settle with? I mean, there's been a decade of two championships in the past because Kasparov was fed up with FIDE nonsense. Now it is Magnus trying to bring some life to chess and FIDE keeps gatekeeping. I have very little respect for FIDE.
freestyle chess is actually much more fun to watch and play compared to regular chess as the games are more combative and less theoretical. Just try and beat your opponent and that’s it. If a beginner learns how the pieces move and learn the tricky way of castling then they’re practically ready to play.
i remember something similar happening in the world of Football (Soccer) where a handful of clubs wanted to create a new league called 'The European Super League' which was independent to FIFA. This drama took by the storm and the did not reach an agreement at the end. A similar thing happened in the World of F1 where multiple teams threatened to create their own league and drop out from F1 due to reasons. Football (Soccer), F1 on one side with their viewership and numbers chess on the other. This is required for CHESS to grow i believe.
I think the gold is at freestyle with 5 minutes time but generous increments, say 90 seconds per move. You keep it fast paced, but with enough time to produce quality moves, and you remove all the boring "i need to learn openings" part. It's pure active chess, no memory, fast paced but with enough time to think and produce interesting games.
This was an excellent video, hope you give us an update in a month or two when more information drops, maybe even interview Hikaru or Magnus about this? Who knows.
I could see a blitz tournament being played 1 table at a time in front of a crowd allowed to cheer and drink beer would be pretty fun. 3 minutes on the clock and you’re guaranteed to have reactions and cheering.
The problem is that, if FIDE does attempt to force all these top players to choose between these prize-winning tournaments, that means an anti-competition lawsuit, at least if we're in the US. None of these guys signed an exclusivity deal, after all, and forcing it on players to crush a competitor is definitely illegal. And if FIDE decides to go that route, they very well could get sued for it.
@gusleffers9265 yes, and it still has significant operations in the US. The EU may be even more stringent on passing and enforcing anti-competition laws, but who knows.
Levy, this is nearly identical to what the Golf world just went through with PGA and LIV golf. If you are not familiar with it I suggest you look it up, it sounds very similar
I agree with FIDE’s stance on the use of “World Championship.” Last week when I saw that Magnus became world champion in something, I was confused. Having so many “world championships, will dilute the value of the FIDE world championship held bi-annually.
I still think regular chess is the more optimal to play, i understand the top players feel as if its stale, but thats just because they are the pioneers trying to find new ways to win, but once they found their ways to win, they tend to cement themselves into a playing style and that makes it feel like you are fully proficient at the game of chess and can say, "oh its pretty much solved at the highest level" but in reality, there is still a good chance that not even 10% of the game ha been discovered. Just cause the top players are the top, doesnt mean you change the entire foundation of chess, then pretend the freestyle is where players will show the highest chess skills. the world champion of chess should always play for it, on classical chess.
Who is changing the foundation of chess and nobody is stopping top players to play classical ...i mean dudes have spent more than half of their life playing only one variant of chess ...why dont u try something new it can coexist also
@@afterneet4421 Read 2nd comment, i agree with you silly sally... doesnt mean that they should even slighty be intertwinned when it comes to ratings and tournament entrys though
Rapid chess standard needs to go to 15m games. 10m goes by a little too fast and ends up in a bullet end game too often, which is meaningless to most viewers.

Back here after the "jeans" drama that wasnt actually about jeans.
Name should be Fischer random. Man gave his life keeping the game alive.
Right. He was a truly great chess champion who did nothing of note off the board.
Calling it Freestyle helps with marketing.
He worked hard tarnishing his name too
He doesn't even get credit for inventing modern Chess Clocks, and we all know why!
Freestyle is a way better name for normies. And new people is what's driving the growth and the money. And let's be honest, are people really going to forget who bobby fisher is? Thats like forgetting who Maradona or Pele is.
Very nice comment. Merry Christmas my friend :)

You can also learn from levy’s gf he is the world number 1 player
Much love to you! Let the girlfriend use the book get close to you in rating!
How many times does it mention magnus Carlsen
They tried this with FIFA, a bunch of the best European clubs wanted to create the "super cup" as an alternative champions league, but FIFA wouldn't allow them to play the champions league if they did and that would cost them way too much money.
Levy: this video will be edited
the edits: 2 transitions and text in the upper left corner

World Series of Chess. Single elimination tournament like March Madness
Thanks Levi, I like these news commentary videos a lot, I hope you will do these a bit more frequently (as long as there is worthy news obviously)
Hey levy i know you primarily focus on chess recaps and beginner lessons but i really love the type of content where you speak your mind and give your thoughts on stuff love this style of content bud
Nobody should have a copyright on "World Championship". FIDE should only be able to trademark their own name.
Pretty sure if Magnus just started his own chess federation and organised tournaments and championships then FIDE wouldn't exist within 5 years.
Which one did Kasparov make?
Not sure... but will get hairy for everyone
@Chris.M Professional Chess Association, apparently. 1993 World Chess Championship.
@@asumazilla yes, so what's your point?
Trying to elevate the organization *over* the event won't serve either purpose as well.
new gotham meta: creates a click bait title, then spends the next 20 minutes explaining why it is not click bait
Telling players where they can play is illegal monopolistic behavior. FIDE gets no control over player lives. We are not slaves to FIDE, meant to be bent to their will.
Is this the part where you tell us you're a 2200 rated IM? Or a 600 rated online blitz player?

IMO chess is never going to be a mass spectator sport. The most popular sports are simple and spectacular, and chess can never be either of those things.
Hard to really call it a sport when the best players are all out of shape autists 😂 chess a game not a sport
It actually did become a “mass spectator” sport in Norway, after Magnus Carlsen entered the scene. Although they only watch on TV, not on big stadiums…
Disagree. The clock in particular makes it very tense and thrilling.
@@John-p7i5g it definitely isn’t a sport you’d go to the pub and watch with the boys though.
And after two day magnus disqualified from championship, weird.....
Classical chess is about to die just as Levy is nearing GM
" I can’t remember the opening moves of the London " etc is actually the beauty about freestyle chess since it’s not about memorisation. Freestyle chess is easier than normal chess especially for newbies and amateurs you dont have to remember certain opening lines and you don’t auto lose bec you can’t memorise the enemy opening. Its much less about preparation which is a good thing
In 1972 General Motors offered Bobby Fischer 10 million dollars to do a car commercial.😮

Chess never fails to get played by Magnus and Hikaru...
like NHL used to call Stanley Cup winners "world champions" although only US and Canadian Teams were allowed to participate...
Levy your content makes me feel better. Thank you for getting me into chess.
Regardless, the way live chess is televised is pretty woeful. There is no understood standardised format the way there is in tennis. This puts a lot of people who aren't chess experts off.
1. Having a clear and stable view of the current board position at all times
2. Keeping commentary on point, so that it mirrors what the players are doing in the moment.
3. Keeping commentary sterile during rapid move sequences
Too often during the WCC you'd have commentators chatting about something irrelevant and 3 or 4 moves were played, with no view of the board.
As a person who really only watches chess content and doesn't play, Freestyle chess is very cool.
welp, he just left the rapid and blitz world championship over it... he's just fed up

Good rundown, but I think the lack of reaching out to "the sources" (Hikaru, Magnus, etc.) does leave a vacuum to be filled with a follow-up video?
Well, and the promised future statement from the president of FIDE also suggests that there may be content for a follow-up video.
There can be cooperation between the FIDE and Free Style with regard to fixing a suitable annual calendar for conducting the competitions so that players from both sides are not affected and Fisher random to thrive
And i also hope for elo rating for freestyle
There seems to be a "FIDE World Chess Championship" for the trademark with the world intellectual product organization.
Didnt the PGA just undergo this exact same scenario and courts ruled against the PGA as being anti competitive behavior?
They can solve this the same old was how Eric Hansen and Hikaru solved their beef on Road😭

My idea is that if the move timer express, you lose @@mburg33
Let's all face it together: A pair of jeans is the most controversial thing to happen in the chess world since Bobby Fischer.

i remember something similar happening in the world of Football (Soccer) where a handful of clubs wanted to create a new league called 'The European Super League' which was independent to FIFA.
If chess isn't a sport that can fill out stadiums I don't think muddling the pieces up is going to change that.

FIDE is French.
@gusleffers9265 yes, and it still has significant operations in the US. The EU may be even more stringent on passing and enforcing anti-competition laws, but who knows.

Classical,rapid,blitz
And Magnus currenctly hold 2 official fide wc title, rapid and blitz wc
Yes but all these are under the FIDE banner.
I still think regular chess is the more optimal to play, i understand the top players feel as if its stale, but thats just because they are the pioneers trying to find new ways to win, but once they found their ways to win, they tend to cement themselves into a playing style and that makes it feel like you are fully proficient at the game of chess and can say, "oh its pretty much solved at the highest level"
but in reality, there is still a good chance that not even 10% of the game ha been discovered.
Just cause the top players are the top, doesnt mean you change the entire foundation of chess, then pretend the freestyle is where players will show the highest chess skills. the world champion of chess should always play for it, on classical chess.
with that being said, kinda mob boss like to be that insecure about pro players wanting to play a different style

Rapid chess standard needs to go to 15m games. 10m goes by a little too fast and ends up in a bullet end game too often, which is meaningless to most viewers.
I agree. And it should always be 15+0. The bullet rush at the end isn't really about chess skill as much as it is about reaction time.
Create the Freestyle league and have the grand championship called Fischer Random.
I love this. Championship should reflect and support the competitors more. Crazy that chess prize pools are so small. Marketing could/should be so much better.
I favorite part of these discussions is that Levy and others think a mass audience will want to watch people play a board game.
