Overture from Marriage of Figaro (1786) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) ( (arr. Matt Johnston)
"The Marriage of Figaro", first performed in 1786, marked a turning point in Mozart's career and in the development of opera. Written in collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, it defied the socio-political norms of its time by presenting servants outwitting their noble masters, subtly challenging class hierarchy. This overture, though not quoting specific arias, encapsulates the fast-paced, comedic and subversive spirit of the opera. In this arrangement, the Overture is transformed for a clarinet choir, utilizing the full range of the clarinet family.
