Interesting project! Will be really fun following the restoration to it's former Dakar glory! Also following an Australian that's making an overlanding vehicle of the 6 wheeled version, so awesome following two projects, one with the 4 wheeled and one with the 6 wheeled version.
So beautiful... And so cool... Nice truck to...😊 Your knowledge of what you've got & your excitement is amazing and fun to see. Girls that like to play with trucks a rare and beautiful thing.. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more on the volvo... Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Oh my goodness! Robin, what an amazing project you have ahead of you! It has the typical civilian cream color interior, the steering column ignition switch and other items like the seat upholstery color. I look forward to seeing the progress of the restoration. Keep up the great work!
It turns out my dads uncle competed in the 1983 Paris Dakar Rally and he drove the other c303 truck during the race. I even remember seeing the same truck he drove during the Paris Dakar Rally in a mall.
Hello from France, I follow you on Instagram since few month, happy to see yours videos on TH-cam. This véhicule is a dream for me, I didn’t remember this Volvo truck on Dakar and with the documentation, it’s a réal trésor, thanks for this presentation. I hope your channel meat success. Bye 🖐
Great to hear that it will be rebuilt to its Dakar spec. Yes, it is impossible to sit in such a vehicle and not be in a good mood. To be fair, I never sat in 303 but I think our German MAN KATs play in the same league.
Some interesting reading there in the documentation. This model is so rare these days, I probably didn't see one in Sweden for over 20 years. Good luck restoring it!
Hi theres an Australian couple with a baby just arrived in Sweden a couple of weeks back ..they have a six wheeler ex millitary one hes rebuilding to use as a mobile home to explore europe having previously used Homag overlander to explore Australia... she's not originally from Australia herself.
@@overlandingrobin Hi Robin have you seen the work being done by Edison motors in BC Canada.. they have built their own Off road 750hp Electric hybrid logging truck....called Topsey.. Topsey is all electric but under its bonnet runs a smaller Caterpillar diesel generator. So its lighter more powerful cheaper to run and more efficient saving 30% fuel even running the genset to power the motors full time... But batteries allow regen braking and save the brakes ..store any excess power and allow it to recharge and run without external charging . Plus it's greener can run for hours electric only, needs less maintenance ... burns fuel cleaner and only when needed, because electric motors allow it to run at its Stoichiometric optimum. The only relationship to propulsion is via power cable's. Junk gearboxes, exhaust transmissions, clutches and diffs. as the motors are in the Axel's.
Awesome!! I hope to pick up my c303 soon! I got 2 streachers to try and use for over landing the vehicle in stock condition. Seems so many have hacked up up these that I want to keep my as close to original as possible for looks and reliability . Nice to hear the race versions were basically stock trucks. Cheers from the US.
So cool you’re also getting one! I’m actually going to start on a minimalist overland build in the grey C303 I have. I will also be putting 2 stretchers in. One for sleeping & the other one for storage.
It looks like there is a switch missing to the right of the diff locks. It appears to be a Low-Neutral-High switch, but that is on the stick shifter also. Puzzling.
Was there any documentation how the rear axle broke? Was it a badly locked bolt on the crown wheel? Good luck with your rebuild, greetings from "Volvo Laplander Camper"
There is a lot of documentation, but not entirely sure what it all is as it’s in Swedish. Will start translating it soon, hopefully with the help of someone who speaks Swedish
That Volvo is pure Gold, and an Ex-Dakar is wow!!! Om606 yes but in this case please no, 3L L6 (If I'm no mistaken) petrol original please please please. The original race livery ❤
Hey Robin, I really enjoy your content, I find the C303 an interesting and fun vehicle. If I were to purchase one myself, how much would I expect to pay for such a vehicle? I understand it may vary due to condition and mileage, I'm looking for just an average. Thanks!
Prices seem to be going up. I’m in Europe and for a good one I’d expect around 15ish. In the US it’s usually going to be more expensive as the import costs need to be added. Very rarely they pop up for under 15 in the US. I believe I’ve seen 2 in the past year
Awesome truck! How do you find / afford them? The switching of camera views was blowing my mind - left hand drive / right hand drive 😂 Question - what does the throttle slider do above the choke?
Haha yes I sometimes film with the from camera so I can see what I’m doing, all my cars are LHD. That throttle is similar to cruise control haha, just more prehistoric. Set it at the tempo you want to go and it keeps it at that :)
Throttle was for PTO-control. Also civil-specific, given all got PTO (but not all got PTO-winch as well, is having a visible 'N' position on the T-case indicator. Military only showed High/Low (but got the same 'hidden' Neutral inbetween).
Some questions. As far as I know, all C303 had 12V electrical system. The TGB 11 /military versions had 24V electrical system. Is it the bolt-on transfer case PTO mechanical winch on it or something different? Is it the Tatanka hydraulic hydraulic power steering or the original pure muscle power steering? Is it the thin or the thick radiator (2 or 3 rows)? In any case, could you make a PDF version of the documentation so we all could have a chance to see the unique material. I would even purchase it just out of curiosity. I have a true Swedish sold C303 ex-Vattenfall (a Swedish energy company) and my native language is Swedish so I will for sure be able to read it all.
All civil had the large radiator (same as TGB20, plus military for Malaysia & any other clients in tropics). My guess is the 24v setup was either ordered specifically (for both easier wiring & military spare parts), or got retrofitted later on, at the same time as the entire body got retrofitted (seems alu-zinc top till bottom (first indicator is missing left-side footstep, second indicator is that it *seems* the lower panel edges are more 45 degree roundish than 90 degree square). Since the alu-zinc body panel retrofits were all done at the same Military Verkstatten as the original rear-body construction (Volvo only supplied cab-frame's, no rear bodies whatsoever, neither to civil nor military clients), other things might have been upgraded at the same time as well, but my guess is still having 24v right from the start, on specific order. (not necessarily taken from the civil production line/spec's either; civil C306 firetruck frames were also taken from the same production line/batch as the Malaysian frames, the frames being prepared for both LHD and RHD) No hydraulic powersteering here. (I have the first-ever sample once done by Tatanka, sourced from an old & rotten civil/municipality C303, retrofitted into a C306 firetruck (belt-driven, metal tank on top, under top/front engine hatch, second generation was crank-driven, metal tank on top of pump, current version is belt-driven again, plastic tank under top/front engine hatch) The 24v volt gauge probably wasn't done by Volvo, but just for the rally, as no other civil 12v never got one either, AFAIK. Would be cool to establish brand/model (and era/year) though, for anyone else who want to retrofit something historically correct. Rear tow bar isn't typically civil either, it is missing the secondary horizontal support beam, on both side attached to the frame.
So in Sweden no one saw the value in a rare, historical, Swedish Paris-Dakar rally winner.First owner put it away, second owner removed the historical patina, made an ordinary Puppy of it. It had to leave Sweden. I'm sure the value will only rise. Even ordinary old trucks have seen prices rise more and more. Never forget Swedish MP-politicians who scrapped those out instead of letting someone buy them because of "environment".
The full restoration and taking it to the next Dakar is the only option.
Wow, it’s crazy how big of a deal this thing is! Can’t wait to see the restoration process
As a Dutchmen who grew up in the seventies eighties and the heydays of mumbling Jan de Rooy in his DAF, I’m very exited
Interesting project! Will be really fun following the restoration to it's former Dakar glory! Also following an Australian that's making an overlanding vehicle of the 6 wheeled version, so awesome following two projects, one with the 4 wheeled and one with the 6 wheeled version.
Yes, the Outfit! They’re doing a super cool conversion :) I think they’re diesel swapping it as well
What an awesome machine!!
Very nice and the end result I’m sure will be amazing. I have a C202 and it’s great fun to drive, just a little smaller
The little Volvo that could! What a beaut.
So beautiful...
And so cool...
Nice truck to...😊

Thanks 👍
That is super cool. It is like a mini Unimog (in style, is what I mean). Awesome. Looking forward to the restoration videos. Thanks for sharing.
So excited for this project. A piece of 303 history!
Sweet ride look forward to seeing the restoration!
What a truck! It seems so capable and well-made and has already had such an interesting life, only now to embark on it's best adventure yet :)

Thank you! Looking forward to restoring it😊 the interior in this one is very nice, probably the nicest one I have seen
Congratulations for the purchase.
What an awesome vehicle. Congrats! This is going to be an epic project!
De C303 is helemaal op zijn plek in het bos. Veel plezier met het terug brengen in Dakar outfit.
I follow you from Instagram. I love your job. nice to see you on YT cheers from Chile 🇨🇱👋
very cool machine with history.
That's awesome, looking forward to following the restoration!
Damn... love it 👊 boh. Bistrica car wash 👍 and Pokljuka overlanding
Can't wait for the progress of the dakar truck😍 shame I've never seen that kind of truck in my country 🇮🇩🥺
Wow what a great project, and love the fact you’re going to restore it to Dakar spec. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing your progress 👍

Thank you for the kind words! 😊 I also wasn’t aware there were 2 Volvo Dakar trucks, but here we are. Happy we found it!

Thank you! The documentation is really cool! They kept track of everything in there, very interesting to read what they did during the Dakar rally
Brilliant mobile home for driving around the world...:)

Yes, I follow them :) the Outfit! Doing some cool stuff with their C304

He wasn't sure of how to tackle some parts...but as you're watching you're already probably able to advise them. 👍🏼😎
The ABBA girl beautiful as ever

always wanted one to turn into little home
stunngly beautiful
My dad worked on that Dakar Volvo 🙂
Un superbe engin merci pour le partage

Your videos are good, but what I find annoying is that its hard to decide at which beauty to look at, you or the volvo.
How would you compare it to the Pinzgauer?

Thanks for the info, Robin! This really helps as I see a few for sale here on the West Coast that are in good shape.
Phew. Nice. Eat your heart out Range Rovers.
Ive got a Range Rover classic as well. This thing is definitely more capable though
