Toby Gad actually co-wrote the song with BC Jean, who samg it first. Beyoncé got it, and made it populare about 15 years ago.
Toby is a big big song-writer, and choose Angelina to do this remake for his piano diarees.

This cover is glorious, it lets her voice absolutely shine. Thanks to Toby for asking AJ to sing this reinvented cover of his song for his Piano Diaries album. Toby is quoted saying, “Working with Angelina has been nothing short of inspiring. "If I Were a Boy" is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and originally performed by Jean in 2008.[1] The song gained international attention the same year in a version by the American singer Beyoncé, from her third studio album I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Jean and Gad also handled its production alongside Beyoncé. Inspired by the difficult break-up of a romantic relationship, the song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company rejected it. Beyoncé then recorded her own version. Jean was upset when she learned that Beyoncé was releasing it as a single, but eventually, they reached an agreement.
I was never impressed by the first cover. Now with Angelina the song jumps out to me. She sings emotions farsighted from the hart.

A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year.
In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the fourth version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.

Brad! You puzzle me. There is not a video of Angelina singing to which you have reacted without you remaking that Angelina is a good singer "for her age". Will you still be saying the same when she is 30, 40, 50? Can you not accept that when watching and listening to her, the age is completely immaterial? In my opinion and thousands of others, she was a good singer from the moment I first heard her sing Gloomy Sunday, at the age of 7, way back in March 2014.

Just to let you know, the other co-writer of the song, BC Jean, was the first to sing the song as well as the person the song came from. She had just broken up with the man that she loved. Per Toby, he played it for Beyonce one day and she really wanted to sing and use this song, and the rest you say is history. Angelina and Toby have been working together for a while now and are creating new music for her to sing. They teased a song at a special event called Bad Valentine and it should be coming out within a few months. This collaboration is awesome! @@CarlD70 Hi Carl! Yeah, not that hard to see why though. Beyonce made it such a huge hit for herself and they played her version on the radio constantly during that time. Now, Angelina has breathed new life in to the song through both versions she was involved with. I tried listening to Beyonce's version and found it just okay when compared to Angelina's Piano Diaries and Artist Version. As you said, Angelina just took this to another level.

Toby Gad is a multi Grammy award winning songwriter and producer. He has worked with many of the biggest superstars in the music industry producing award-winning hits. He is currently in process of producing an album of his top eight songs called Piano Diaries. He invited Angelina to perform this song with him at piano, which was originally made famous by Beyoncé in 2008, and has received over 600 million views. Most believe this version is much more touching and emotional, and Angelina has made it hers. Move over Beyoncé! It is more of a recreation than a cover. Toby and Angelina are working on some original music coming in the next few months, possibly as an album. He is very influential in the industry and this undoubtedly is a huge break for Angelina.
