From my experience in Italy over many years of professional visits to the country is this : people don’t dress up , they simply dress .
They wear the clothes with a natural elegance that is only found in Italy .

To be dressed in an Italian style has a lot to do with a mindset, it’s not just about a brand. Boys are brought up with the topic of attire, in other cultures it’s regarded as a feminine topic. What I love is the combination of perfect craftsmanship and serenity in the look. Men’s fashion is very often not an armour, but underlines the humour, a reluctant sensuality and never looses to be the background for a dazzling lady. For me tailoring of Cesare Attolini is immaculate perfection and men’s fashion of Giorgio Armani is a wonderful example to have a modest attire that is not boring. When I was in my 20ies, I loved the baroque patterned jeans of Gianni Versace combined with a monochromatic shirt, tanktop or vest. This kind of sexiness is not appropriate anymore at the age of 55, but it looked quite cool.

I think the weather has a lot to do with the way people dress. Wearing bright and fruity colors under a shiny sun is more appealing than under a cloudy rainy sky. Weather also has an impact on people's behavior and mood, reason why you'll see more smiling faces during the summer in comparison with during a cold winter. The best style in my opinion is the one that fits the occasion. It might not fit the mood, but if it fits the occasion very well then we can consider the person is well dressed. That was my personal opinion.

As an English man, I’d say we feel less comfortable taking risks with colour and style. Italians are more daring… the English are also too worried about being judged for ‘trying too hard’… the Italians have mastered the nuance of adding a little bit of fare without going too far.
The English haven’t got ‘sprezzatura’ but Italians have it, almost instinctively.

One could argue that the streets where the rich and famous shop or recreate aren't representative of what most Italians do or are or behave. Most Italians (and not at all the Milanese who frequent " il quadrilatero della moda") however have a sense of style independently from their income and, perhaps aside from teen agers who are prone to follow the fashion of the moment, follow they style rather than fashion. L'uomo elegante non si veste alla moda was something that I have heard very often from my father and other people of his generation. This attitude is something that is acquired by growing up in an atmosphere where pursuing masculine elegance is seen as the normal way of life and not something done creating a special effort. The " nonchalance " which has been talked about before is not the product of a studied attitude but the matter-of-fact way way of life which has being acquired from from your father and your grandfather and so on, no matter how humble they may have been.
And this makes the Italians (did I say I am one?) different from other people around the world . The same way as , naturally, Italians gravitate around good food, because they have been exposed to it their whole life and eating well is something you do everyday of your life and requires no special effort or reading any books to acquire something you weren't brought up with, as it may be in different cultures. By the way " sprezzatura" is not a word that many Italians would be familiar with ( it is an ancient term to all intents and purposes) although they may very well bring it into practice.

  • @giorgioc6765

It's not necessarily just a matter of brand or of kind of dress. It's also a matter of matching (colors, fabric,... ) and choosing the right fit.
It's ultimately a matter of taste, and that's something you assimilate growing up in a certain environment.
And who does, shows it even if they're trying to not look fashionable.

The chap that spoke about the Loden coat being Milanese is a little out, it's more of a Tyrolean fabric and was widely adopted in Northern Europe. But he's hinted at one thing that's never mentioned - Milan is one of the most temperate European cities so a gentleman's wardrobe is significantly different to one in London, Paris, Stockholm, New York. It has to accommodate far less inclement weather and for shorter times.
Do a video in Milan when it's cold and raining to see what they wear then.
If you judge that "dress better" means an endless display of unstructured jackets, soft collars, loafers, informality and so many people wanting to be different that they all look similar, then Milan on a good day probably is the place.
If you want perfectly fitting sober suits, shirts that are crisp and smart, a tie done up in a knot that works with the outfit, (not just a slack four-in-hand with a knitted loose tie as an afterthought hiding behind the guise of Sprezzatura), a quality pair of socks (remember those Milan?) then London & New York are dressed better.
However I agree that there are fewer and fewer (men especially) making a concerted effort to dress in a stylish way now. Casualwear and corporate branding have taken over. I admire those that make the effort, wherever they are. Fathers need to guide their sons, the first visit to a tailor used to be a rite of passage for a young man that's gone now.

English definitely more classic and restrained whereas Italian is more eclectic and often more interesting. No it isn't. Our tour coach drove through square miles of 3 storey concrete blocks of flats, on the fringes of Milan, which is the fashion capital. Our tour guide told us that most of the people in Milan have never been inside a house. Everyone lives in little flats that they don't even own. They don't spend their money on house and garden, so making a good impression is a substitute. The millionaire West Australian and I agreed that the Milanese could keep their fancy clothes. We would prefer spacious homes. This WA millionaire and his family dressed for their tour of Italy in shorts, graphic Tshirts and thongs. Straight out of Jeans West.

That's not how "italian men" dress, that's how "a specific demographic of italian men" dress, i.e. over 30 middle-upper or upper class in Milan with a good job in services, sales and trade, or even in fashion industry, high or very high level education (university degree at least) from wealthy families or else with a good deal of money, in a day or an hour when they're clearly not working (if it is a working day, then they're not working full time). So maybe... 0,001% of italian men?
Go in other streets than the fashion districts, go in other cities than Milan, interview other age ranges than over 40, go into grocery markets and shop, go in blue collar neighborhoods, go in front of postal offices or peripheral schools... That could give you the REAL taste of what italian men wear.

You CAN see even better dressed people in Rome, IN THE CITY CENTRE. But that's not a representative sample of ALL Italian people.
Italian people have good taste in dressing. But what you see in the video is over-the-top, very fashionista or too unusual, many are dressed like they're going to a party or a ceremony. That's not the way NORMAL people are dressed for their EVERYDAY life or work (unless they work in the fashion- or show-business).

traveling the world you recognize an Italian at 500 meters even if he is in jeans and a t-shirt, it's just a matter of style, we are absolutely unmatched!
I was in Tokyo in 20'23, it was winter and it was cold, I was dressed very casually, only worried about staying warm, yet some girls approached me and asked "Are you Italian?" I answered yes, and they laughed covering their mouths with their hands, one of them started naming several Italian cities and some famous Italian sports personalities, then she added that they had bet seeing how I was dressed, I asked what made me so identifiable since I thought I was dressed in an absolutely anonymous way, the answer was surprising, they talked about color combinations and how I wore clothes in a "perfect" way according to them, also noticing the shoes, they also said, that especially in winter, Italians in Tokyo are rare but you can immediately recognize them, they are the ones who dress with STYLE!
This was said by nice girls from Tokyo.
In the summer in Italy, you can see a multitude of tourists from all over Europe and even the US, in the summer heat they are dressed like Italians with light clothes, shorts to the knee, and sandals, but the Italians appear pleasant to the eye, the tourists are often ridiculous, I can't explain the difference, maybe it's the colors, the wrong sizes of clothes, I don't know what to say, they are always simply ridiculous.
The English and Germans, especially, are often truly terrible!
Tourists from the US are easily identifiable and are certainly better than the English and Germans, tourists from northern Europe such as the Dutch, Swedes, and Norwegians, are unwatchable LOL
Style is not just wearing a designer dress, style must also exist in jeans and a t-shirt or a light summer shirt, as only an Italian can wear it, it's genetic!
Let's not even talk about women or girls, here we can't even open a discussion, any foreigner disappears when an Italian woman or girl shows up, in her perfect minimalistic simplicity!
You who seem to be a traveler, do a survey in the East, like Korea, Japan, and other places and ask their opinion, being Asian will tell you from the outside what they see and think, and you will be surprised, to hear from everyone, two words: Italian Style!
for example, with that dull pale blue shirt how can you wear a silk scarf of that color over that shirt, it's simply ridiculous! believe me, go in front of the mirror and look at yourself without thinking about the value or beauty of the individual item, look at the whole, it's chromatically terribly unbalanced!
You will discover that you need a darker shirt to wear that scarf, you will find the color in the design of the scarf, or you will look like an idiot!
You will also discover the color of that shirt does not go well with the color of your skin and your eyes, YOU CANNOT WEAR A SHIRT OF THAT COLOR!
The signature or the value does not matter, it is simply wrong for you.
    in addition,
the scarf has no point of color that recalls the shirt, appearing like a dishcloth thrown around the neck, even if it is silk (at least it seems) and has an important value-
The choice of the color of the garments compared to your own colors is the starting point, the reflection of the light blue shirt on your skin makes you a zombie! bluish, look at yourself and you will see it!
Your color is a gray not blue, light gray shirt, for that medium or dark gray scarf, the gray will highlight your eyes and you will surely earn even in presence, remaining sporty.
this is just an example (but I was not joking change shirt) Italians have all this in their DNA they do not even realize it they just do it!
    Bel video molto interessante! ciao

The Italian style is something genetic that comes from ancient times. When Poppea bathed in the donkey's milk that her maids poured for her or when Lucullus organized banquets with the best delicacies, the Barbarians, that is, the current inhabitants of the Nordic countries, were a nomadic people who slept in tents, did not wash themselves and had long and dirty hair, they didn't cook the meat but ate it raw, tearing it with their teeth after letting it mature by placing it between the saddle and the horse, on long journeys to quench their thirst they cut into the horse's neck and drank its blood and they didn't know writing to pass on their deeds when Rome had Virgil and Caesar.😀
