Also the fact that there is not a whole lot of things you can do with mermaids. They are just like normal Sims with a tail. I would’ve liked if they did with mermaids how they did with vampires. Too many oversights..
Couldn't agree more. The features they're trying to offer are promising and the world is beautiful indeed, but the gameplay just felt too shallow especially with the $40 price tag. No new skills, no fully-fledged scuba diving, and a dumbed-down lifeguard career. Also, I really wish for them to focus much more on the traditions and culture of Sulani like what they did with Jungle Adventure so the world feels more unique. I even felt that this expansion pack is almost comparable to Jungle Adventure, which is a $20 game pack. Anyway, amazing reviews as always!
Sulani is a real place?
I wanted so bad a hidden temple or a tomb where the elementals live; and we have to explore the cave and resolve something to be able to do so; also, I really wanted a secret mermaid grotto, or a place where they hang out, and the only way to reach it is max level scuba diving or being a mermaid! They could do so much with this pack but they just did nothing!

How come the game infested with loading screens and fake 2D map screens can’t have underwater diving lots, but the game with a completely open world from 10 years ago can?

@Axel Drans They're concerned with performance issues and their target demographic. A lot of sims players aren't hardcore gamers that are gonna have brand new computers with amazing specs. And having features like that will cause performance issues.
when we say recycling is good for the planet, we didn't mean recycle previous sims expansion packs for almost AAA level prices and less content

That was my biggest disappointment in the expansion pack.

We badly need someone to make a replacement for The Sims, the way Cities Skylines replaced SimCity as the standard city simulator
Cities skylines has become the best city simulator ever; planet coaster and soon planet zoo are imposing as the best park tycoon and zoo tycoon games; for now, the sims still reign as the best life simulation game but if they don't listen to their fans they won't be able to beat the upcoming rivals.
@@alexdelaloire8739 Well the same people that worked on Rollercoaster Tycoon also created Planet Coaster. After the last Rollercoaster Tycoon flopped they changed the name and created Planet Coaster.
@@sweetpjeb23 yeah what I meant is either Maxis and EA do something and improve the sims or another company would take the lead!! two situations here: cities skyline situation or planet coaster situation! If the sims got improved even if it's just the pack contents and gameplays, they'll keep the monopole a little bit (so planet coaster situation) but if they stay like this they'll loose lots of customers (like with cities skylines)!

i kinda disaagre with the planet coaster being better, because i still think roller coaster tycoon 3 had more cool stuff like water parks etc.... but yeah.... sims need another game to compete tho.

This should have been a game pack, not an expansion.
Fun fact, someone accessed the Sims 4 website and saw the list of Game Packs and Expansion Packs. Suffice to say Island Living was in both of them. It's not a glitch, as the Game Pack label and design were in the cover. Meaning this used to be a game pack in the first place.

@Squidward’s Flute Cats and Dogs is one of the worst packs if you compare it to the previous Pet packs. However the community is dumb and its always their 2nd or 1st favorite expansion

After having played with this pack for awhile it feels more like a stuff pack than an expansion, we got A LOT of items but the gameplay feels lacking
It definitely feels like a game pack, if they’d have added more content like being able to manage your own hotel/resort, underwater lots that you can explore for the diving skill and more in depth mermaids etc I’d say sure, but really you’re just paying $40 for the world of Sulani and not much else. It’s a nice pack don’t get me wrong but I feel like there should be more on offer for it to be an expansion pack.
@@jim.b0b 100% agree, I would even settle for just more depth for the mermaids and underwater lots (even if that means a loading screen) I'm not as pressed for resorts as other people but yeah. It's definitely lacking

I agree entirely. It's a beautiful map with the best CaS and Build/Buy Items but outside of aesthetics there's just something missing when actually playing.

I always wait for LGR reviews because that way I know exactly what I'm getting when I buy new DLC. That said, I'm enjoying the game more than he is so I've bought every pack, but I had a hunch that he'd have some good things to say about this one. He's been putting new stuff in the gallery and I don't recall him doing that at all since I started following him.

That is not how it works, which is why TS3 has such shit graphics.
I feel like I'm the only one who prefers ts3 graphics. Ts4 is beautiful yes, but in a cartoony artificial way. Ts4 maps look like 2D cartoons for 5year olds. Ts3 graphics are actually realistic and on high settings are amazing
@@lilfairyprincess1o1 sims 3 actually has superior graphics just bad character designers. Literally the graphics are more advanced, things like HDR and stuff whereas sims 4 rendering is limited as fuk

This really makes me want to see a real Sims competitor that can either do things better or force the Sims to improve a bit more. Or to at least be an alternative to the expensive greedy claws of EA
Apparently there’s a new indie life simulator that’s going to be coming out on Steam sometime soon. I think it’s called Paralives. Who knows, maybe it’ll give EA a run for their money

Personally, I'm dissapointed beyond belief. This should have been a game pack. NOT an expansion. As the latter it is just WAY too lackluster. I wouldn't be so dissapointed if the next expansion pack wasn't months away now. Island Living just took the slot away and now the waiting time for the next expansion will start anew. THAT is the worst part.
I feel you. But I'm hoping the reason this expansion was so lackluster is because they are working on another expansion at the same time. I'm hoping university in fall?

Its really sad when you think about how lackluster the sims 4 really is. I have a lol the game packs besides spa day, and all the expansion packs besides this one, and it still feels empty. It’s really crazy compared to how I only have 5 expansions to the sims 3 and yet it’s way more fun
Oakisap exactly! Plus EA pushed mods and CC more in the Sims 4 than what was in the Sims 3. So even when you don’t want to buy everything, you at least have CC Packs and mods to increase the experience even more!
I think 4 is more fun but that’s just my opinion they are both great games
Something really went wrong in early development, and now it doesn't feel like any level of expansion pack could make this feel like a complete game. Even without all expansions, S3 & S2 gameplay just lasts so much longer without becoming boring and feels like a complete experience.
Started playing sims 2 again with packs,and it feels endless, I didn't know how big it is
xJesssicax also, sims 4 expansions aren’t expansion-y feeling. Like take the sims 3 pets, and the sims 4 cats and dogs. Cats and dogs adds cats and dogs... and they are really dumb too. Once I got my dog taken away because I wasn’t feeding it when it was standing right by it’s bowl. In the sims 3 pets, you get cats, dogs, raccoons (actual ones not pets), deer, horses, unicorns (both good side and bad side), and little animals like snakes and birds. Plus, the sims 3 pets is only 20 dollars. There are more expanples too like ambitions and get to work, but I’ll only touch the basis right now.
Ambitions; a huge world. When your sim goes shopping or somewhere else like a laundry place, you can see them going there. You get 5 interactive jobs
Get to work; you get the smallest world yet with 4 lots, 3 already being reatails, and 3 new jobs.
$40??? Wicked Whims is a better "expansion pack" and it's free.

But yeah I knew that I wasn’t dropping $40 on this once it was announced. Definitely picking it up 50% off at target.
Oh my God I totally agree the off-grid stuff barely makes any sense and there should be a way you can use renewable energy. off-grid doesn't mean just living in misery. my Sims have an mood-lit where they're just tense or unhappy because they're getting a lukewarm showers and they still feel dirty, they should have a trait where you enjoy off grid.
Yeah also like...how come sims can't go get water from the ocean/waterfalls/etc in order to refill the laundry tub, or clean their toilets/sinks/off grid showers?! I was playing off grid and it was so frustrating that stuff had to get disgusting because "cleaning requires plumbing" 😒

Yeah they really should've balanced the lot trait better and reintroduced the eco-friendly trait from TS3. If they'd done that + given mermaids an actual skill to master it would definitely be worth $40.

@@ravenaroteros for sure, i thought it was weird the off the grid lot trait was added in the patch. But also, I find it odd that the exp pack didn't add any new object for the off the grid trait, since it was marked as a feature for the pack. It's gonna be My First Pet Stuff all over again, things that should be in the expansion, but were taken off to milk more money. It just makes the expansion feel incomplete and definitely not worth the full price.

Sims 3 Island Paradise (especially the diving) looks so much cooler...still can't be convinced that Sims 4 is better
Isla Paradiso looks so much worse than Sulani. It's a bunch of generic buildings that could fit into any town, surrounded by generic textures. If you can't run everything on max, it looks horrible, and if you can run everything on max, it looks worse than Sulani.
not that I'd waste $40 for little more than a half completed world.

Yay I've been excited to see this! Agreed on everything about off the grid. Was really hoping it would've won the community stuff pack vote and I'm glad we still got it anyway, but man it could be so much better. Hopefully they can easily expand it since it was put in a free update instead of restricted to Island Living
players should taking this expansion packs selling more seriously... I mean $40 for recycled concept in every sims game, BUT with subpar or passionless contents. I think EA will make another Sims game simply because the players are easily-manipulated goldmine, not because they want to expand creativity to the franchise.
You can always complain about your dissapoinment, but this expansions practice is too precious to let go for EA and you will always fall for it.
Imagine how lackluster University is gonna be... :(

I actually don't believe that University will ever come. Normally, it would be the move to release the base expansions first (Seasons, Pets, University, ...) and than fill the game with fun, but not necessary content, like Island Living and Stranger Ville and since they've moved to the fun-content, I actually don't believe that University will ever come around. Especially since they are releasing the Macig-pack next.
University would take long to make. I mean what do you need it for.

If they had added a skill tree to mermaids and added hotels and something to diving i'd be happier to pay full price... glad i went on a website and got a gamekey for much cheaper than the actual expansion pack

ellure Let’s just talk about how most people who like EA and their shitty packs are BUILDERS who hardly ever go into gameplay. The Sims team mostly caters to builders, and there is hardly a good patch for gameplay.
It says a lot though when we see someone like Deligracy express her disappointment with this expansion pack. She was honest instead of keeping quiet so she can keep getting games for free and going to events, lol.
*sims 4 stans,,, honestly i am never gonna budge from sims 3. i love the mods, open world, and possibility to be creative. ten years of playing and i'm still not bored

It's almost as if the sims team learned from the criticism of the too linear storyline of Stranger Ville and totally over corrected in making it too simple. Either that or EA cut their budget or jumped the gun somewhere...

@@smallworldhaker7781 That definitely seems like the case, Island Living was announced like what two weeks before it was set to release? Seems like EA was telling the sims team "Quick, get something out!" and having them cut a lot of content out of the pack.
I remember when get together was originally announced, they ended up pushing back the release date by a few weeks. And that pack actually feels very fleshed out compared to the other ones

i mean it literally when i say i can’t play the Sims 4 for more than 2 hours. i used to play previous sims games for hours, would even fake my sickness just to stay home from school and play for all those 8 hours! lmao but what im trying to say is it gets boring.. you’d think with all these packs it wouldn’t be, right? wrong. things they add make the game fun & exciting for a couple of days but then it goes back to “ok, what now?” not to mention me waiting for everything to load makes me tired & not even want to play once it’s all loaded up, & also the reason why i hate leaving my sims house bc it takes foreeeeever to go to another lot for only like 4-5 sim hours & then loading back when going home... sigh. pls, we need to make the sims great again, it’s like a lot of the developers are in it just for our money..
I'm a bit hesitant to say that they should just make Sims 5 already instead of beating this dead horse, but if they do such little effort for this game, then you can believe that The Sims 5 would be worse...great review anyway, Clint! ^_~
Souji Monaru the things people complain about will go to the sims 5 if they make it any time soon. The things people hate(rabbit holes, loading screens, ) those are the main 2 cause they annoy people so much. They added these to allow people with weaker pcs to play. I like some of this stuff cause it makes the game run smoother for me but I understand that people who would already run it fine get mad. Until there is a new age of computers are software they shouldn’t release the sims 5. I want the sims 5 to be a completely open world(like connecting towns and open oceans) like playing in a big world like Breath of the wild. This would require a new software and new computers to be able to run it.
It looks like the sims 5 is already on the works, and now that they made the sims 4 entirely for "weak computers" I hope they make the sims 5 entirely for decent computers.

@@desired2396 There are computers that can run that. You just have to buy the parts. Even my pre-built PC ran Sims 3 just fine with all expansions and stuff packs. It's time the players invested into a better gaming computer.

Imo, I feel like the Sims 4 dlcs are honestly overpriced, since the content that Maxis and EA gave us are very lacking, heres how they should price their DLCs:
Expansions: 20
Game Pack: 10
Stuff Pack: 5
I don't think they'll be losing money the community is still somewhat big

Diving should be an active thing to do like in TS3
All the new careers should be active. There's literally no reason they're not. Like life guard... ocean swimming... why would it be a rabbit hole?
I hate traits that are super tailored to the pack. I'll never use child of the ocean/island unless my sim lives in Sulani
The world of Sulani is pretty but also lacking.
I was so excited for this, and I'm really disappointed as someone who played the Island Paradise in TS4, they keep downgrading from the previous iterations that were great. I could've waited for this and not had a stuff pack. Or just have 2 game packs.
As someone who grew up in Hawaii there's definitely a charm to island life that I'll always enjoy, and this does seem like it has an absolutely lovely aesthetic, but maybe not for that price. Thanks for the review, LGR! Always look forward to your Sims coverage.
The most important things i want in sims 5 (maybe you can make a video about it?)
1. open world
2. sims 4 gameplay, which means: moods, multitasking, the building mode
3. careers like in the sims 3 ambitions and jobs where you actually do something like firefighter or life guard (sims 3), architect, singer, magician, acrobat, etc...
4. cars! and car animations like in the sims 2 nightlife, where sims actually go inside the car and freaking drive it out of the garage or lot
5. festivals like in sims 4
6. CAS like in sims 4
7. more customization options, like in the sims 3
8. Resorts, you can own or just visit them , like sims 3
9. purchase properties (sims 3)
10. earning fame by performing or by making videos about your career, like, you're a singer, you upload videos on how you sing, or give sing tipps, you earn fame, same with performing on stages, you earn fame both ways! singing, acrobatics, movie director or actor, etc...
11. University
12. more careers where we can follow our sims to their job and help them do it, like in sims 4 get to work or sims 3 ambitions
and more things
this is just my oppinion, i honestly love all sims 3 expansions and i think that the sims 3 is in some aspects a much better game than sims 4
even tho sims 3 is "outdated" compared to the sims 4, but i enjoy playing the sims 3 more than the sims 4, in the sims 4 you just sometimes feel you are limited and because of the "closed world" and loading screens if you wanna to go to just your freaking neighbour, this just gets really annoying.

@@sauldownbadman876 it's not that bad yes, but it is a huge step back. The game is just not engaging or complex enough. Until to this day I play Sims 3 and discover new things. This is how complex and well thought game it was. Sims 4 should have built on 3, fix all those technical issues and added more layer of complexity. Sims 4 is just too shallow.
And repetitive. How many times did they reuse this chemistry beaker animation? How many times do they use regular conversation animation in a unique named interaction with another sim? A lot!! I miss the days where I would spend weeks exploring content in an EP. Now it would take me a day or two to see everything.
Im kinda getting the feeling like we are gonna get the "my first pet" kinda pack for this expansion as well.
A "houseboats" game pack perhaps?

Yeah I felt let down by the pack and the cost. It definitely feels like they didn't flesh it out enough. Why didn't they have more events that could spawn around the islands, like City Living? I know they had the one Turtle hatching thing, which popped up unexpectedly and didn't allow for much pre-planning of your sim-day and seemed to be over fairly quickly. Why not also have other events you could start yourself (other than the Kava Party).
The mermaid thing was cool as first but seemed too easy to become by just buying the kelp from your aspiration menu, and there was nothing 'special' about meeting one - and once you made your sim into a mermaid then it was like 'well now what'? You didn't really get anything much new to do interaction or skill wise that we can't already do with music, potions, voodoo dolls and cheats.
I did enjoy the conservation career and odd jobs and such, and having it effect the island. I love how the world looks and the free-range open-ness of it. But there's nothing deeper there and I was left sorely disappointed throughout most of the gameplay.
The mermaid thing was so downplayed! When i noticed sims hid the fact that they are mermaids from you I got excited, I thought I could get the kelp that way or get some new interactions but no. Like everything sims 4 it ends in nothing even though it good potential.

Every Sims 4 expansion have been watered down versions of Sims 3 packs. Get famous did offer something unique but was still weak.

@@simi.883 If youre referencing to "Sims 3: Late Night" that was not the same. Yes, it had the reputation system in a similar way. But it didnt offer "content creator" as a job and video editing as a task you could do. It was quite unique, but still didnt go nearly as deep as I know they can (theyve gone far deeper with TS3 content) and as such its still not worth the money.

@Pareidolia Sorry I can't help you, on my pc it works mostly fine ;/ The only issue I had was a lag because of the shadows, I turned them off from the game and it stopped, you should give it a try and maybe lower all the graphic effects from the tab 'graphics/performance options'. I don't know for sure if it will work but it might make it easier to run for your computer.

I don't think they're rushing shit. I think they know they don't have to put any effort into the game, so they don't, and people still buy it. Then they purposefully leave stuff out from the base game and add-ons just to be able to make more money by selling features that should already be available, later in a diff pack.

I’m pretty sure whenever the mermaids are in human form they don’t have the scales on their legs, which was one of the coolest parts of mermaids in ts3. Like, how else are you supposed to define them?
Yea same, and it seems like there are some options for both a "good" and "bad" mermaid interactions, so having some sort of branching tree depending on if you wanted to be nice or not would have been interesting.
That's a pack that really deserves an update, like they did with the spa day game pack... Such a beautiful world! They could add exploring underwater and a skill tree for mermaids.
Spot on review. You addressed all the issues I've found with Island Living. It's like a beautiful person with nothing to say. Not that you don't want to be around that person, but what a missed opportunity. I'm enjoying it just enough to not feel like I wasted my money.

Everyone thought the downgraded graphics and load screens just meant they were gonna fill the game with LOADS of content and bring us back to The Sims 2's entertainment LOL. I really have no idea why people are still putting money into this game, it is literally the most downgraded lack luster version of the sims ever. The developers obviously don't care... I thought the sims 4 was cool at first but I stopped after "get to work"

The Sims are so lifeless looking and their emotions and animations are so out of date looking. It's not interesting anymore. I really Hope Sims 5 goes much deeper in the AI.
a better bet would be a life simulator from another (indie) company coming out, starting off like the sims 1 once did

its because they just pretend to listen. they just look it up to the ea game changers program and its followers that provide only good positive comments how TS4 is perfect. LOL One of the gurus even said that he prefers to see comments only on twitter and never read the forums because its full of negativity (probably because the major forum members are older simmers) The y have a new target and for them TS4 is amazing and old fans are completely ignored by them.

Thanks for the review, you are right, I never though about it but yes this seems closer to a $20 game pack over a $40 expansion pack. I am pretty disappointed that when you dive you don't an underwater exploration section similar to the jungle exportation gameplay - I wouldn't have minded a loading screen here.

I really hope some good indie company picks sims concept and makes it's own life simulator, yet better then any sim game out there. People would crowd fund it quickly and interest would reignite fast. Well, one can dream. For example, after years, Heavy Rain came to PC, so game fantasies might become true some day.
I just learned (by roaming through the comments of this video) that there was a project just like you described called Paralives, it looks promising IMO!

I bought a key for 28 € and still don’t think that it’s fully worth it. I feel like this expansion pack is useless if you don’t live in Sulani itself and now that it’s summer I like the beach vibes and living/playing there but I can’t see myself using Island Living when it’s fall or winter where I live - or even spring. Kind of a bummer tbh.

On the Sims 3 I ALWAYS made a family in the Isla Paradiso world because I loved it so darn much. I was so excited when I saw it was coming to the Sims 4, but this is just really dissapointing. There’s almost nothing new and they took away so many fun things. I always had a living boat and now they’re just gone! The lack of content usually made up to how amazing it looked, but this is just stupid.

It's not THE final one since there's another one coming this fall called Realm of Magic, but I wouldn't actually be surprised if Realm of Magic tuned out to be the last one
