    This is exactly how I am with golf and that has why I have taken to archery. I get such anxiety when I go to strike the ball that I almost don't want to. Then I have a horrible round. With archery I want to be okay but at the end of the day I'm getting a little better. Thanks for all the content and I am going to look at using triggers for when I play golf.

    I think you are correct in aiming while close bail training. Close bail training without a sight is wasting time, at least for me. Because as soon as you introduce the target back into the routine TP returns. By aiming at arrow holes and not considering the results after the shot allows you the freedom to train your subconscious brain the shot process while allowing the conscious brain to be involved in the shot also.

    Here’s my vote for a stand alone warm-up video and a scenario lots of us are familiar with: You’ve just arrived at the range and your buddies are anxious to get started. You’ve got 10 minutes to get “warmed up” before heading out to shoot. I’m not talking Olympic level warm ups, just stuff that your average archer can do before any type of shooting to help insure that first arrow goes where you want! Having that in a repeatable routine would be very nice.

    • @blackspeed69007

      10mn is way too long for a warm up, specially for archery. I know what you mean and usually if you take the time of one end + arrow collection (so about 4mn + 2 or 3 mn depending how slow your mates are to collect their arrows) it will be plenty. 5/6 mn is plenty for being warm, meaning close to break a sweat, but not out of breath yet...

    Bit late to this video but something that worked and still does for me. Change bows. It sounds weird but I shot 3d tournament compound for a while. Went well in the beginning, then massive target panic set in. I eventually dropped out. And then started making Trad bows ( different story there) and shot instinctively. For a given value of that phrase. I ended up recently with a perfect 60 indoor distance 6 arrow end) with a recurve Olympic bow and a compound. Doing the Trad shooting once a week helps just calm the brain down and focused on the shot process. That and it is a hell of a lot of fun too

    My issue with target panic has always been connected to scoring... as soon as I start scoring... "I don't know where this one's going", "will it affect my score", "I hope this one goes well". I now don't shoot scoring rounds very often during practice so I can engrain my process more and learn to trust my subconscious (but not shooting instinctively!). It still takes a lot of training and self discipline on my part to control my monkey brain... Monk brain vs Monkey brain!! I know that potentially has downsides when it comes to actually scoring, but the scores have been heading in the right direction when I 'let go'. Like a lot of us here, self doubt under pressure when shooting is the real enemy... if archery has taught me anything, surprisingly, it is that I need to learn to back myself more often - not something that I do naturally.

My compound is the same. Joel Turners Shot IQ is helping. With compound I can work through it using the Scott Hex release. Your not alone. Glad I’m not either! Your TP symptoms is exactly same as mine. I have spent many hours trying to cure it in mental only ways but have not found a 100% solution. Thar creeping anxious feeling is supressed so I can shoot ok but not grear . A more mechanical approach I have tried involves anchor, put forehead against string and aim. With the string on the forehead you get kind of a wall (like on compound). Then start to pull/expand until it breaks. I.e. goal is to make a back tension type release (compound) with your fingers. Sometimes I get great shots with this approach. But I have not managed to get it consistent enough. Sometimes the pull cycle is too long or the fingers never breaks. For it too work greay, one need to relax finger until the string almost slips, the start the pulling.
    Have you tried something like this?
    I would like to see more vids on TP and your combat against it. I think TP is a struggle for most people. But many do not know what is. Thanks for a great channel!

  • @toddaway

    Problems with these psycho-triggers: 1) they require conscious focus, which diverts focus from expansion (conscious mind can only focus on 1 thing at a time),
    2) the subconscious knows that a good shot can still be made even if the psycho-trigger has not activated...unlike a recurve clicker which will physically ruin the arrow flight if failed to activate, so your subconscious KNOWS it has to get through that clicker every single time.
    Most guys will find success with these psycho triggers in the beginning because it's something new to focus on and they are not under any pressure, but time and competition will show that it's just smoke and mirrors.
    Even Joel Turner has switched release methods to a thumb release (th-cam.com/video/DvJ05KTF9Xo/w-d-xo.html) and in my opinion it is because you can use that release more like a gun trigger and just squeeze the index finger until it slips off the thumb and the shot goes off. That should indicate that the sear method has problems.
    Psycho-triggers have been around for decades in Traditional archery (limb clickers, and even the touch of the arrow point to the bow-hand index finger, or hold the index finger of the bow hand up alongside the arrow until everything was perfect, so you couldn't release without the arrow hitting it, etc.).
    All that being said, I think if anyone can make it work, it's you, so I wish you the best, and look forward to your self-analysis after intense competitions!

    • @williambilse
      @williambilse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have a different solution? My TP is so strong that I force the grip sear like hammering the trigger on a wrist strap release. I can't overpower my subconscious and I'm considering a limb mounted clicker for hunting.

    • @toddaway
      @toddaway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@williambilse That sounds familiar for sure. And that is because deep down you know that grip sear isn't contributing to the physical requirements of a good shot, so you brain is like "I'm at full draw, my aim is perfect, I really need to make this shot, but I'm &^%(!$# waiting for my fingernail to slip off the grip before I can shoot? I don't think so...bam."
      I think you can improve your control over TP by 1)being really strong physically so you can hold easily on target while you try to calm and focus your brain. and 2) having a final action that you truly are 100% convinced contributes to a good shot. For me, that is focusing on the felling of tension and direction after everything else is all set. But I'm always looking for better solutions.

    • @lstavenhagen
      @lstavenhagen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@toddaway The acid test for any TP analysis is, does the solution it proposes actually work. Well, if you go by that metric, it turns out that "mental" TP treatments, tho they sound great on paper, fail in actual practice at a fantastically high rate, nearly 100%. Like Jake says, nearly every BB shooter he has coached has TP to some degree or other, and it's pretty certain they've tried every traditional "mental" remedy out there to no avail. OTOH approaches that take command-shooting as the basis of the problem into account, as Jake's option here does, put TP in remission at a similarly high rate, probably close to 100% or maybe a little under that. Either way, they are extraordinarily successful. This is why the surprise release is so effective against TP on the compound bow, and clickers which time the shot for the archer are almost universally used by olympic style archers.
      I think now is the time for a working alternative to command-releasing to finally come to barebow, and I think Jake has found it.....

    • @toddaway
      @toddaway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lstavenhagen I agree the remedy for TP must be based on a physical approach, and a surprise release is ideal, and the only option barebow shooters have for a surprise release is a subconscious psycho-trigger...but I also think they will not hold up under pressure. You know what a lot of shooters of old used to call their psycho-trigger? Hitting their anchor point. And countless archers fail to reach their anchor because of shot anticipation, amplified by pressure situations.

    Hi Jake.
    I also had (and continue to have) target panic for the last 6-7 months, but now I've found a way to overcome it (or it seems) at least while I'm training. I'm a very competitive person and usually find myself fighting against my previous scores or of the people who's better (and hence, struggling).
    So for the last month, I've tried to focus on a mix of draw holds and blank bale (close range, with target, but eyes closed) as my main training routine and I found that it really helps me to shoot FITA-40 and 3D IBO rounds better. I hold steadier, have fewer drive-by's, and am feeling more confident than before.
    Yet, I wonder how I feel in a competitive environment because I haven't been there since I've incorporated this routine.
    I'd like to get a few thoughts on the topic if you have any.
    Also, have you tried 3D with barebow? What's your opinion on it?

    for me-I just count once the string touches my nose. 1 thousand 1 1 thousand 2 *ting*. All the while keeping my bow arm as relaxed as I can. I also make sure my grip hand is in the exact same place everytime. I marked my bow hand with 5 points of fine marker. I use the creases in my skin to point at those marks. It's like bowling to me-if my grip ain't right-I'm never hitting my target 40' away. I highly recommend Dean Hinitz book focused for bowling. Many of the tools in the book can be used in any repetitive sport.

    Is the clicker (what it might be) always activated in the expansion phase or a bit earlier? I’m wondering does it apply to all sorts of mental clickers, like feather to nose/chin.
    It seems like the ones who use the feather technique, start to pull it to face quite early in the shot cycle. They do the loading, anchoring, stop and then pull the arrow several millimeters until it touches the face.

    It's a 'psycho' trigger right? So I'm wondering why you couldn't get round the torque issue by coming to optimum anchor, expansion and aim with the finger nail in position, your recommended moment of calm and then imagining the click, and releasing. A sort of meta-psycho trigger.

    I teach both BB an OR. In case of BB I never teach something like this grip sear. Instead of fixing your grip to be able to sear it (last video) try to get rid of it.
    Even with OR, I usually add the clicker last when backtension and expansion works. I stand beside them and watching the arrow point. I practice several exercises with them to learn not depend on the trigger. eg not shooting when clicks (hold for one more second), one arrow with clicker next one without it, etc

    Hey Jake, super noob question (not at all related to the grip sear):
    Is there a way to keep my string from untwisting after I unstrung my bow? I’m having to adjust my brace height pretty much every time I string my bow, and I was just wondering if there was a way to set it and forget it, or if I needed to bring my square to the range every time

      you can eat make a sort of a "knot" in it, you take one ear and make it wide, like into a circle, and put the other ear into it, and pull it through, and after pullign it through you are also widen this up.

      You can try using a paper clip to hold the string ends. Also similar to the method previously described, check out Shore Shot archery with Anthony Marino. He has a good instructional video.
      However it’s still a good idea to check brace height with a bow square before you shoot.

    I see a lot of movement in your bow hand that tells me you are actively pulling your finger off of the grip. Im a complete ammeter archer, but a very accomplished precision rifle shooter and pay a lot of attention to movement of the hand upon pulling the trigger. I guess my question is: how do you know when it right? From what I can see, it looks like you are the one deciding when your finger “falls” off the grip.

    PS: I'm trying a "proof of concept" on my Inno CXT where I glued a thin piece of plastic into the edge of my grip that my middle finger nail pops off of. My goal is to have an increase in pressure integrated into my overall pull through the shot. This makes it just like the way I fire my Like Mike on compound, where increase in pressure on the trigger finger is integrated into my shot on that bow for a surprise release. The hope there is I''m already accustomed to this on compound with no anticipation issues, so that may give me a head start on a working technique on the grip sear idea.
    So far it's promising, but obviously not legal for barebow. But it's more to see if I can get a working technique. Then I'll worry about a legal solution later....

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery
      @JakeKaminskiArchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like it. Good work. I feel Similar results and similarities when not pulling the actual finger, rather a larger movement that makes the finger move (pressure low in the grip) and the secondary motion is the finger moving. This will help discourage the issue people have in competition with the sear/psycho triggers.
      I’m trying to cut a path and a method that works for TP like the clicker does for recurve and I can share the journey for others to see. I’m hoping to stumble on a bullet proof method for others to use who struggle with TP.

    • @lstavenhagen
      @lstavenhagen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JakeKaminskiArchery yep, like I said, I have exactly the same form of TP that you describe, and it's the main reason I've shot compound for all this time. And could only moderately shoot olympic style. I've always wanted to shoot barebow, but it has always been out of reach because of TP.
      I struggled with the clicker too, but I think that's because it's mostly audible and doesn't give me as forceful of a signal as the tactile fingernail popping off the sear does. When I do it just right - no creeping/grinding but a clean instant pop its totally unmistakeable. I can't ignore it or miss it or fumble with it, my release is totally a "surprise" with no anticipation at all.
      So barebow may be the ticket for me to return to recurve with the grip sear....

IBO and ASA made a stink and submitted a letter to world archery. I havent heard anything in months, but as you said they cannot ban an action.

  • @lstavenhagen
    @lstavenhagen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with "smoke and mirrors". TP is based on having to time the shot by "command shooting" - Michael Braden uses the term "controlling the release" to describe this underlying reason for TP. Basically, its the ability to anticipate that very instant in time (because you're controlling it) that's the actual problem - your mind and body are fully alerted to the instant the bow goes kapow against your upper body. Instinctively, your body will attempt to protect itself against any blow to it whose timing it's fully aware of. This instinct is nearly impossible to suppress, so TP is a typical result.
    The solution is replacing this instantaneous archer-decided command with another simpler process that times the instant of the release for you. The "surprise release" is the analogue on the compound with a somewhat different mechanism, but underlyingly it's a similar concept. That's what this grip sear method does - it relieves you of the burden of timing the shot. The slow process that ends with the finger popping off the sear is what times the shot for you. It sounds like a crutch or "smoke and mirrors" but it isn't. In just the same way using a clicker to time the release for you does.
    I have exactly the same form of TP as Jake does and I have had to shoot compound because of it, because the surprise release is available there. I've enjoyed many years of TP free shooting on compound with the surprise shot, but my first love is olympic recurve.
    But I just discovered the grip sear on my recurve, and I'm having a similar experience with it as Jake describes here. If it's successful for me, I can resume shooting recurve, and I'll just switch from olympic to barebow also. So far it works much better than a clicker for me, I believe because it's a tactile signal rather than merely audible. So Im going to put some more time into it....

    There's something I don't understand about this kind of sear.. if when you (your brain) know you are ready to shoot, instead of at that time consciously perform your sear (nail on grip), to hear it and then shoot, why not shoot the moment you (your brain) know you are ready ?

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery

      Because there is no way to be ready. if there is intention to shoot the arrow before drawing back, I cannot aim at all. Literally not able
      To put the point on the center without letting go too soon and inconsistently.
