That fact that location is the most important factor in fishing is the very thing that makes a mockery of all the clowns posing with fish like it is some massive achievement. I know somebody (on a FB group) who pulls, on average 3-4 20lb+ pike out of a syndicate water every session. Then poses with each one like they have just won gold at the Olympics. It's almost literally shooting fish in a barrel, my mum could do it. I'm more impressed with a free roaming 3lb perch from a local canal caught by a weekend angler who has put the miles in, than a captive 6lb one (that is so well known it even has a name) from a small commercial, caught by a professional angler who spends 100 hours/week on the bank.
Yes, but don’t worry about those people who have private waters to fish, they represent such a small % of anglers. Depends where you live in the country too.... some people don’t have access within a reasonable distance to fish waters that hold quality fish, so just fish the waters you can and enjoy the challenge you have in front of you

@@Thomhuntfishing I only come across your videos a few months ago, since then I’ve watched every one and quite a few of them multiple times to extract all your tips. It’s definitely given me a better understanding of the variables that I can adjust to suit the conditions on the day. ie. big vs small, bright vs natural, fast vs slow, overweighted vs lightly weighted, paddle vs fork, cranks vs shads etc....
instead of just taking a stab in the dark and guessing on all these variables, I now know how to read the water better to select a method, a lure and retrieval that should be in the ball park of what the fish are after, and adjust to suit from there.

Excellent video. Fishing leeds/Liverpool canal towards Leeds Centre, seen a bloke catch a massive perch (easily 3lb) on a live bait, few years back in the exact place. Its where the river aire connects to the canal. Big water outlet running into it too .. and there's a drop near a wall you can sometimes see the perch sat in shallow water and theres some lumps.... so I no where they have been a few year back. I'm guessing this would be a good place to start to try break the 2lb mark this year. Thanks for the video 👍
No problem. Remember that if the area is heavily fished they often move a few hundred yards to find a quiet spot so explore the areas above and below that hotspot
@@Thomhuntfishing it flooded a couple of year's back making one bank further back and a bigger drop so it gets fished less now tbh. I'll search further up aswel 👍 Its like a big dead end on one side, a big cul-de-sac with a big waterflow into it from the river aire that joins at that point. I wonder if the perch use the new shelf that's been created lol. It's basically the old path people used to fish from, about 3 foot down. You can see the path underwater on google maps. 1 - offset hook and Cheb weight
2 - offset hook jighead
3 - dropshot

great video mate, tons of good info, i have a reservoir close to my home and i know it holds perch upto 5lb, problem i have is that u can only fish from stoney shore and rocks are another 5m in the water so we lost tons of baits, so fishing cranks is kinda out of the picture in the winter time, also how do u tackle head wind when fishing from a bank?
Regarding shaggy areas, consider a drop shot with fairly strong line, say 12-14lb on the hook but keep the tag end short at around 6” with a small loop on.... then tie a lighter line say 6lb or so on the loop and put your drop shot weight on that. If it gets stuck, you have a weak link and only lose the weight, not the whole rig. Regarding head winds, go for high quality 8 strand braid like YGK as it’s super thin so doesn’t catch the wind as much, and also consider very dense baits like metals. They fly like bullets!
Great video. Have you ever fished a Tokyo rig, if so what conditions and how would you fish it (especially from a bank fishing point)?
I played around with a Tokyo rig a bit last year but without much success to be honest. On an offset hook they’re good around weed beds and snags. Fish them with creature/craw baits and fish them like a skirted jig keep them close to the bottom and hop them along 👍🏻

Hi Scott, depends on depth of water and venue I’m fishing. On canals it’ll be on a 2-4g jig head, rivers (depending on the flow) will usually be 3-10g and reservoirs usually 6-20g.
For 90% of my perch fishing I use a Westin Finesse T&C in 5-15g or 7-21g.
Unless I’m in a canal when I use a Westin Streetstick W6 2-7g
I live in Ireland and I'm almost afraid to use bigger lures for perch as I've never had a take on one, but maybe I just need to persevere? My PB perch is only about a pound, caught on a worm and float, I'm gunna try target them specifically in the boat and see if I can gain some confidence in the big lures, because I love that style of fishing, any tips would be appreciated 👍
The Westin Shadteez in 9cm would be my go-to if I were you. It’s not a huge bait but just the right size for perch between 12oz-3lb+ 👍🏻

When to strike is an interesting one
Sometimes on Dropshot or texas they are pecking and I give a little slack to provide no resistance then thump and sometimes taught and immediate strike, in depths of winter the big ones can be really subtle and you would think it was a small fish, what's your general approach through methods and seasons with stricking ?

Yeah good question. My general rule is hit it as soon as you feel a bite, it’s only when I start missing a few bites that experiment with leaving it longer. Especially on dropshot I’ve found when feeling a bite, then dropping the rod to give slack can get extra fish….. but also have a look at my ‘dropshot paternoster’ video as I use this a lot in the depths of winter. Slower/more delicate methods like Kickback rig or Carolina I do tend to use in cold water when the fish are really slow, but be careful in warmer water as the extra ‘slack’ in these rigs means you can end up with deep hooked fish as you don’t always feel the bite straight away

what specifically is the lac stretch on the grand union canal?... is it an abbreviation for a certain location on the guc?
The LACC stands for the Lure Anglers Canal Club. It’s a club that controls about 30 miles of Canal if I remember correctly. About £25 a year to join got some great stretches I recommend it 👍🏻

How is fishing a Craw on a standup jighead any different to a Ned rig with a buoyant bait - a method you profess to dislike? Not being funny just interested in your logic!
I think it’s just confidence.... I’ve caught loads of big perch on crayfish/creature baits, and find them a good all round bait as I love fishing them on rivers in the summer a bit quicker, as well as in the winter a lot slower. With a Ned rig.... there’s just something about it that when I put one on it always seems to be a last resort and I hardly ever get bites on it, so therefore don’t tend to put it on very often. No doubt they catch big perch.... but like I said, it’s just not for me!
