YOUR HOME DOES NOT NEED TO BE AESTHETIC

    I love that you shared your spaces in your apartment that aren’t “aesthetic” but that work for you with your real life. I’m always questioning how functional most of the aesthetic apartments are that I see on Instagram. And I actually think there’s something to be said that having an aesthetic space comes with a trade off of not being as functional! 😅

      @@abbys5347 thank you! 🥹 I question these aesthetic apartments too…some don’t even look lived in! I think a lot of it is camera angles or cleaning up before sharing lol. It reminds me of the idea that form follows function…function should always come first imo! Otherwise it’s just useless aesthetic trash 😂

    Love this video, thank you so much for this! I bought a home 2yrs that could definitely use some upgrades, it's 50 yrs old and not much has been done to update it since its build. I recently started a minor remodel on just the living room (getting rid of popcorn ceiling and wood paneling). Now I'm constantly reminding my other half that we don't need to make all the design decisions and purchases right this minute. Its ok to have furniture that doesn't match, its fine if the old rug doesn't really work with new paint color, we don't have to buy lamps and end tables when I'm not even sure what I want. It's a constant struggle to convince him that a minor remodel doesn't mean the room is going to look like the show room display at the furniture store. This video will help! Thanks again.

      @@cc8942 congrats on your new (old) home! That’s exciting to have a space to call your own. There’s something even more gratifying about collecting the perfect pieces over time and letting it come together slowly! Plus I think you learn a lot about what you want and what works by living in the space and letting it grow organically.❤️

    one thing i see a lot of youtubers stress like it's a cardinal sin to not have is matching light bulb temperature. aesthetically i like it more mixed. i guess things are mono temperature during the day maybe? but in a room it feels too matchy and artificialish? and there are far more instances of varying light temperatures in the world that doesn't "stress us out": like the cool moonlight behind a hot campfire, a cloudy sunset, etc. but i nearly felt the need to replace my cool bulbs for warm ones despite them still working

    Thank you so much for this video. It really helped soothe the pressure I put on myself with perfectionism and my self perceived deficits with ADHD. I’m a graphic designer and feel like my whole life needs to be aesthetic, but I literally am too tired to care about aesthetics outside of my job. Just reminding myself it’s okay not to be aesthetic and functional is good. ❤

      @@michellepark9163 this is the most relatable comment ever! I’m right there with you with the perfectionism and ADHD. It can be really debilitating. And working in a creative field really adds to that pressure! But same…all my creative energy would be used up at work, yet it was almost an expectation by others that I was living, eating, and breathing interior design 24/7. Not to mention people wanting free design advice in my personal life when I’m trying to not think about work 🥲

    I love this video! I would say, I lived without curtains my first year out of college, I hung curtains just to add some interest in a boring white bedroom. Hanging curtains at the windows instantly made the room feel more cozy. Ever since I have hung curtains, for light blocking and aesthetics. (Except, I’ve lived in my current place 7 years now and still don’t have curtains there. Usually, when I moved into a space, I a design would “come to me;” not this place. I was dried up. Even seven years later, I’m struggling with a design.

    Baudrillard writes about objects being detatched from function in his book The System of Objects. It kind of turns your home into a designer theme park. Having personal style takes years to cultivate and leading with function doesn't mean you don't enjoy fashion. It just means you're less susceptible to the trend cycle.

    One of the main reasons why I deleted all of my social media accounts was because I was/am SO sick of the mass consumerism hawked on interior design accounts. You do not need to change your sofa or knock down your kitchen so that it looks like something bland from Studio McGee or Amber Lewis. Almost everyone's homes on social media interior accounts use the same brown colour palette and are void of personality. There is nothing wrong with having IKEA and hand-me-down pieces from Grandma's attic vs sterilely styled homes for Pinterest.
    I have a rescue dog and cat so nothing in my apartment looks perfect. I've given up because pets are like toddlers. Can't have anything fancy without someone touching something that doesn't belong to them!

      @@ChantalS-m8w agreed! I don’t like feeling like I’m being pressured to buy things I don’t need. I think this is why the whole “underconsumption core” trend gained popularity…because we’re all getting tired of extreme consumerism being depicted as normal.

    I think it's just weird how everything is categorized. I have certain styles that I like simply because I like them. I've been told I like cottage core. No, I just like what I like. I've been told I'm into that 90's vibe. No, I'm just a Gen Xr and still vibe like I always have. The thing I hate is that whatever is trending at the moment is usually the only thing that's available at stores. When torn jeans were all the rage, I couldn't find a pair of jeans I wanted because they all had holes in them. And for those of us who want nothing to do with trends, apparently everything is a trend or a scene or an aesthetic. It's so annoying.

    • @claritykat
      @claritykat  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@cesigallardo2233 omg yes! I’m annoyed by this too. I understand being inspired by certain aesthetics, but I think putting yourself in one specific box just because it’s trendy encourages people to have an all or nothing mentality about style, probably leading to more waste and overconsumption once they decide that one style isn’t them anymore. Reminds me of how in middle school & highschool most people would either be preppy, skater, or emo and I didn’t fit clearly into any of those which I think confused some people. 😂

    i am perpetually stumped by the misuse of the word 'aesthetic'. It is NOT an adjective, it is a noun. "The room had a traditional aesthetic." or "A modern aesthetic." Not "The room was aesthetic". It's so... DOH!!

    • @MaximumDull
      @MaximumDull 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Language changes with use though. The etymological fallacy explains how original meaning doesn't dictate current use, which can be altered by trends. It's cool to think about how meaning changes and why, especially if you enjoy writing poetry.
