- In Posiva's disposal of spent nuclear fuel, a bentonite clay buffer is installed around the copper canister in the disposal hole using a buffer installation system specifically designed for this purpose. The system comprises a Buffer Installation Machine, which performs the installation of the buffer material into the disposal holes, and a Buffer Transfer Device, which transports and delivers the buffer material to the installation machine. A single bentonite buffer segment layer weighs approximately 1,360 kg and has a diameter of 1,650 mm.
Both the installation machine and the transfer device are mounted on an AGV platform (Automated Guided Vehicle), which utilizes a navigation system for movement within the disposal tunnel and for coarse positioning. The platform is equipped with a 166.5 kWh battery that powers both the motors and the device mounted on the platform. A 55 kW diesel engine can be used to recharge the battery. The platform's motors have a combined power output of 180 kW, allowing the installation and transfer devices to reach a maximum speed of 5 km/h.
The buffer installation system is sequence-controlled, meaning that the initiation of each sequence requires approval from an operator working at a separate main control station. Once approved, the system's devices automatically execute the sequence.
