Although innocent children were killed I also think it's a realistic view of when you push people too far that they resort to vengeance and murder. No one can be so graceful holding onto integrity all the time. Even the best of us also have a bit of darkness inside us.

Did you mix up the Empress's 2nd and 3rd son, because the 3rd son didn't have asthma. Also you have to consider, the Empress was at fault for the deaths of other babies in the harem even if indirectly, and caused Ruyi and Xiyue to be infertile for most of their lives.

I have no doubt Chun would have thrown Hailan under the bus to save herself and her children. Hailan did indeed play a very dangerous game. How different the story would have been if Hailan had been caught. There would have been no 5th prince. Without him the one consort would have successfully drugged the emperor. Can you imagine what chaos would have happened then?
