    This is interesting. In ten years of professional bee farming, I've never once thought about cleaning my smoker. Hmm. I burn various types of hardwood planer shavings, and never had significant build-up.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they burn HOT, there isn't really any substantial build up. You're probably not alone in that Drew.

      @@FrederickDunn I enjoyed watching him so excited the bees were out and about. He did a video demo on how he prepares his hives before he paints, yes he is a real stickler on maintaining the exterior of them. The colors are very soothing to the eye!
      Have a nice weekend Fred. Glad you checked it out.🙂

    Hey Fred ...nice! Obviously the high frequency tank you have for cleaning your fish stuff would not work for this?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John! Yes, it would work extremely well, particularly if I remove the bellows and immerse the parts. BUT, some viewers are frustrated when I show equipment that most don't have at home. I did give it some thought though :)

    Have you had any issues with the chemical residue that might remain in the smoker affecting your bees?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, and none that I could tell. If in doubt, you could do a fresh water rinse after the creosote is powdered.

    • @svgs650r
      @svgs650r 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrederickDunn Most of those preparations contain organic salts like trisodium phosphate (consult the products MSDS/SDS) which when heated will produce toxic and corrosive fumes so washing/scrubbing with a dish soap and through rinsing would be worthwhile, obviously, YMMV!

  • @adde9506
    @adde9506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hardwood burns hotter and creates less of it's own residue than softwood. It looks like that product works as smoke, and won't really clean the body of the smoker. A good hot burn will often burn most low temp combustibles down to ash, which is plenty "clean" enough. If you can find a way to boil it in water with a lot of baking soda in it, that should do the trick, if you can't burn it clean. Also, you probably want to do another hot burn to make sure all of the chemicals are gone.

    If you put that burner onto the lid, get it red hot...wait a little bit, it becomes ash.
    MAPP gas works even better than propane!

    Just how literal is "backyard beekeeping"? Middle of the suburbs in my backyard, or would that annoy my neighbors too much?
    Edit: Do boxelder bugs bother bees? That's a lot of b's lol

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You always have to give consideration to your neighbors and neighborhood. Lots of restrictions out there, BUT, there are Brooklyn, NY residents keeping them, so you may be surprised.
