But they took special pains in this episode to show that it wasn't just Star he was pining for, but the magic and peril he encountered during the battle for Mewni, and that has always surrounded Star.
It was all because of the curse. He already had genuine romantic feelings for Jackie(the Box of Truth literally confirmed he was honest about that) and the botched curse by Tom ruined those feelings.

But the second one is a bit simpler to figure. Marco's cape is a symbol of him being special. In season 1 Marco was the safe kid. He was aggressively normal. He was boring. With Star he went on all sorts of adventures which culminated on him helping save a magical kingdom...and he can't go back from that. Marco has to wear the cape because if he takes it off he would be admiting that the special time in his life is over. His life would've peaked in high school. And the whole "you're my best friend" thing. Well, I'm pretty sure Marco was just trying to turn Jackie into Star. Star is his best friend and she is the most important person is his life, so if he convinces himself that Jackie is his best friend than she can take Star's place. Frankly, their relashionship was doomed from the start. Before the whole naysayah thing they had barely talked before. Marco was never in love with Jackie, he was in love with the concept of Jackie. That sort of thing never lasts long.(And it is a very teenagery thing to do)
Well, when you think about it, your partner is supposed to be your best friend. Tom said so himself in the fourth season that he wanted a relationship with someone he can be best friends with and Star already had one: MARCO. Just as Star is Marco's best friend. That's why Jackie called it off, because she knows that he cares about Star deep down even if he doesn't realize it yet. I do agree that it's really sudden and changes the whole idea of the show, but would it really have been a good idea to have the show be where they're both on different dimensions? I mean, we love the show so much mainly because Star and Marco make such a good team in so many ways.
Your romantic partner is more than your best friend, it's someone you actually have romantic feelings for. People don't have romantic feelings for their best friends. Marco calling Jackie his best friend was messed up. It also contradicted the Box of Truth episode. When he said he had feelings for her, the Box LITERALLY said he wasn't lying about that. Meaning his romantic feelings for Jackie were legitimate.
