On the occasion of the second anniversary of the opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum (Museum) in July 2024, a new thematic exhibition " Brilliance - Ming Dynasty Ceramic Treasures from the Palace Museum" was officially opened on July 10 and will last for two years. The exhibition is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Palace Museum. It uses a new batch of 106 ceramic treasures on loan from the Palace Museum and seven collections from the Hong Kong Palace Museum to showcase the development, evolution and outstanding achievements of ceramic craftsmanship in the Ming Dynasty.
One of the treasures on display is the doucai(multi-colour) Sanqiu (autumn scene) cup. It was fired at the imperial kiln in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. It is 3.9 cm high, 6.9 cm in diameter, and 2.6 cm in foot diameter.
There are many styles of Chenghua doucai cups, and this cup is one of them. The mouth is curled, the belly is deep, the bottom is thin, and the feet are circled. The inside of the cup is plain and without decoration. The outer wall is painted with two groups of colorful rock and flower patterns, with flying butterflies in between. The blue and white color is light and elegant, and the overglaze colors applied include red, yellow, purple, etc. The purple color applied to the butterfly wings is the famous bright purple color. It is characterized by a dense and matte color, which is unique to Chenghua Doucai and is unmatched by later imitations. Because it depicts the scenery in the courtyard or garden in autumn, and autumn generally lasts for three months, it is also known as the "Three Autumn Cups". White glaze is applied inside the circle foot. Inside the blue and white square frame on the outer bottom is the six-character double-line inscription "Da Ming Chenghua Year System" in blue and white regular script.
The shape of this cup is light and graceful, the body is as thin as a cicada's wing, the coloring is elegant, and the painting is fresh. In particular, the colorful butterflies flying among the flowers and plants are about to fall and fly again. They are full of lifelike features, reflecting the painter's superb painting skills and artistic accomplishment.
In 2014, a Shanghai collector purchased a Ming Dynasty Chenghua doucai chicken jar cup at an auction in Hong Kong for more than HK$280 million, sparking a craze for doucai porcelain in the Chinese cultural relics market. As of the 21st century, there are still 16 Chenghua chicken cups in existence around the world. But until now, there are only three pieces of doucai Sanqiu cups in existence, one is collected in the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, and the other pair was donated to the Palace Museum in Beijing in 1956 by the late famous porcelain collector Mr. Sun Yingzhou. The one photographed in this film is one of them. It is rare and extremely valuable and is one of the treasures of the Palace Museum.
