    This brings me back to high school, repainting a junkyard steering wheel trim - flat black with white and blue speckles! Never got around to installing it but maybe on my current E46...

      Right?! I used to spray paint everything on my first Jeep. It was a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. I’d love to buy another one

    Done the same thing to my steering wheel. I've left it in hot water before getting rid off the old 'paint' which really made it much easier, sanded down using 2500 later and it came out amazing.

    I refinished my E46 trim with black chalkboard paint I found at Lowe's, I liked the texture.

    Ha! I always noticed the steering wheel trim too and thought about offering to send you my spare dummy wheel I used when I sent my ZHP wheel to Coby to get new alcantara 😂 I might try this with my shifter surround to make her perfect again. OCD problems 🤣

    Looks nice man I recently bought a second hand e46 M3 steering wheel for my 330ci and restored it. Stitched new genuine leather onto it and repainted the trim like you did. To make sure I got a perfect match I actually removed the buttons on the top trim piece and painted that as well. Mine came out a bit more glossy than yours since I opted for a satin finish so I'm glad I did both trim pieces otherwise it wouldn't have matched well at all lol

      Good call! Thanks for the comment R C. A M3 steering wheel is so much better lookin, especially with alacantara

      @@DayOffDIY After seeing the finish yours had you’re making me want to respray it a more flat finish. Maybe if this one gets scuffed up I’ll use that as an excuse to redo it because I’m jealous of how yours turned out 😂

    Awesome video that will help many people for years to come. Alec I bought 3 of those sport steering wheels several months ago and refurbished them. The only thing I did extra I purchased the BMW leather covers and hand sewed the covers on and they look amazing. I also purchased the air bags when I bought them now time for installation when I get time. BTW I made the same mistake as you with the gloss black and then re sanded and painted with satin black, then placed them on the deck outside to let them cure for a perfect match. Also I used a tack cloth to help with the paint adhering and it helped a lot.

      @DayOffDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thats great info, ill have to give the tack cloth a try! sounds like you got quite a few nice BMWs on your hands, id love to see em one day! still waiting on you to send me an email Johnny!

    If you're in Europe (definitely the UK) and I'd imagine everywhere buy definitely the UK, there was a recall on E46 Airbags. So mine was replaced for free. You just need to get in contact with a dealership and say that you think your car was due a recall Airbag.

    Came out nice, I would definitely buy some Dupli-color plastic adhesion promoter when you do the X3 though

    Great video - thanks for posting! This may be a stupid question but do you really need to remove the wheel to remove those two trim pieces? With the airbag out, it seems as though those 4 Torx (2 on each side) should be accessible already. Or am I missing something?

    • @morefamily9177
      @morefamily9177 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll answer my own question (having just finished the job): No need to remove the steering wheel if all you're trying to do is refinish the bottom trim piece. Once the airbag is out, you can easily access and remove the two Torx 20 screws from behind the wheel (6 o'clock position when pointed straight), the other two Torx 20 are easy to access from the front. This way, you do not have to mess with the 16mm nut holding the wheel in place, worry about getting it properly centered upon reinstallation, or disconnect the cables. The only cable to come out is a little white connector that attaches to the back of the trim pieces for the steering wheel buttons. Hope this helps!

    Would you recommend going straight to flat black or layering it with the other two paints first?

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would go straight to the krylon paint that worked for me.
