Yeah, at first I was having trouble seeing where he was going with some of the design, wondering if it could be done more simply (and indeed it could), but it's really awesome how the load-bearing bar automatically latches and releases as you crank the winch (obviously with the appropriate backing-off of the winch tension). Awesome job! Just subscribed.

Should have been a sign to switch the approach when it became that hard to crank - some simple pulleys between the winch and the load would have required more rotations, but kept the cranking easier. Not sure if the winch might have still failed eventually, but at least it would have had less force on the handle when it gave out.
The gravel for the post is super smart! That’s how hydro poles are put in, 5-10ft deep and heavy compacting every foot of 0-3/4” gravel with a membrane if the ground is uneasy!
When you use a pulley like that and putting a lot of tension on it, put something over the cable/strap like a chain or a blanket. If it fails it won't come back at you full force. Learned that one the hard way

Fill a 5 gallon bucket halfway with your sealant and just dip the post and allow it to drip off. This is the easiest I've found for that stuff. You can also find a thinner style that works well.
My father always used raw tar for tree posts when example building a bridge with direct connection to the ground. Saves the wood for years on. Great video dude!
Love this! Just remember that all of the load is being applied to the three screws on each of the stopping points. My guess is that you’re fine. But I’d personally pull each of those off and slap on some outdoor wood glue then reattach! Awesome build
Yes indeed. The wood might split in two pieces on the line of the screws. Also a metal in wood-connection will wiggle itself loose with time under the load. Fine for quite a while tho anyway! In future maybe D3/D4 wood glue and proper clamping or wooden dowels (think 20mm round peg or sth) would make a stronger connection.
As someone that works in the engineering/production business and loves to shred on my mountain bike I have mad respect for this build! You sir are a genius and y’all are doing great things with this channel! SEND IT!

Just a quick word of advice (not that you need it), if you buy a ripping chain for your chain saw you will achieve a much better final finish on the posts/ boards that you cut with it. Ripping chains are normally skip (50% less teeth), so not only is the chain designed to cut with the grain, it also allows the speed of the saw to be maintained and prevents "bogging" of the motor, all of which contribute to the final finish on the timber. Saves a lot of work! Nice project!
I have a skip tooth chain on there I bought to help, is there a different style of chain specifically made to rip? I would definitely like for the cuts to be quicker...
@@TheShredist. 1st of all I wasn't criticising at all, just saw you having to work hard to plane up the upright post. Normal (cross cut) chain, full house or skip is ground at 25º. Ripping chain is normally 30º or more, so less chop and more slice. You could create a ripping chain yourself by re-grinding a 25º skip chain to 30+º to create a ripping chain (or you could buy one 😉). I have a LogoSol (Swedish) mill and the difference between ripping and cross cut chain is dramatic in terms of finish on the timber and strain on the saw. Size of saw (HP) is also a factor when milling. A well-sharpened ripping chain should leave an almost planed cut, as opposed to the ribbed cut you have, the difference between chop and slice. Glad your Wife came out relatively unscathed, that could have been a lot worse if her face had got involved! All the best, Tim

Hey Back in the day I built an adjustable jump at my Mt Bike Park in North Carolina. The Tar River Trails (not the ones in Rocky Mount NC) were in Granville County. It began as a simple triangular portable wooden kicker built by a friend. It was not a practical thing as it was heavy, too short and needed extra support. So he threw it out of his truck at my trail head. I was sitting on the porch of the club house looking at it, thinking what the hell am I going to do with it. And developed a plan. it was decked on the hypotenuse of a right triangle about 4 feet long and 2 feet high. In my head, I rolled it over and thought about a pivot at the long point. The next day I cleared a line on the side of a slope. Laid in a curved cedar ladder bridge from ground level to a beam 2' high where I bolted the pivot. Set 2 posts in the ground at the other end and drilled a series of holes 2" apart. The Kicker could rotate between the posts and was supported by a steel rod in the holes. With the hypotenuse on the bottom, as it arced it stayed on the rod. I then supported the posts by triangulating with a cheater ramp. The surface went from flat to raised 2'. The transition at the pivot got rough as the kicker was raised above about 6-8". So I made a plywood insert over the pivot that curved with the unit as it was raised and was simply slid in and locked when the angle got difficult. It turned out to be amazing. For a decade many of the Raleigh area riders developed their skills on the Monster Jump. A good session would start with it flat and gradually be raised till complete pucker set in. Maybe a dozen riders ever hit it at full Monster. Great channel! Just stumbled across it. If it hasn't already been suggested - Call it the "Broccoli Drop" Also, add a gauge on the side, so that at a glance as you approach the drop you can see the height that the drop is set to. 👍👍
Damn I’m glad she’s good! My dads buddy was working on his sled (snowmobile) in probably 2003 or so, and the same kind of thing happened with the jack, the lock broke or gave out and the handle spun, then crushed/cut off half of his finger. Not trying to make anyone squirm, it’s just those handles get rowdy! Lol, awesome video and awesome build man! That’s a cool design on the drop too! YEEWWW!!!! \m/
Its awesome! It's really nice to be able to drop higher and higher to the same landing. It's a weird mental game, but when you set it higher, there's a little are fewer nerves since the drop is familiar, it's only the height that's different. Next the landing needs some improvment!

a tip for treating fence post where it gets burried: burn it! enough to char the surface. to treat the exposed, burn it, and then wire brush it! you will like the results!

For the posts pull them out and char the wood the charred wood will prevent rot much longer then any products you can buy. I’ve found a tiger torch works best. Cheers keep the content coming.
So this is great I love it!.. but the lander seems a little tucked away maybe just add a foot ontop to make a sort of gap but at the same time landing smoother!...
There’s a tar coated plastic post wrap that you staple on and heat shrink with a blow torch. You only wrap the part just above ground and down about 8 inches as that’s where the bacteria live that rot the wood. With posts of ash and chestnut you can just lightly blacken the outside with a blow torch, the charred surface resists the bacteria, not sure about pine.

When I first saw the crank being used, I immediately worried something would break and whip, my main expectation was the bush breaking and the strap whipping back. Good to see it was only a bruise though

Crazy what amount of time and effort you put into building this feature. Advice for the next wooden feature: Do NOT put the wood directly into the ground. Although you have some black paint on it. Constructive wood porection is the best way to keep your wooden construction healthy ;)

For sealing wood I use old motor oil mixed with some diesel, not the most eco friendly thing, but if done correctly the trees might outlive you.

i suggest you put a roller on the bottom side of the crank strap so that it doesnt wear out over time on the wood.

That's a good point about the bike park! Could definitely be useful as the season and conditions progress throughout the year.

Advice for the next wooden feature: Do NOT put the wood directly into the ground. Although you have some black paint on it. Constructive wood porection is the best way to keep your wooden construction healthy ;)
