Butch is just amazing! Very, VERY few are in his class on traps! He's a Master! He's so much fun to watch! My Dad & I used to enjoy swing band so much together! He would have loved this! What a great chart!
The energy that Butch brought to the drums is mind-blowing! He probably played this tune a thousand times yet the hunger and energy he displays is really second to none! I would be terrified to do a drum battle with him he would exhaust you before you knew what hit you lol. Truly sad we just lost him. Make some room up there Buddy here comes some Thunder! R.I.P.
Around 1980 Count Basie came to Macon Georgia and performed at the Grand Opera House. Butch was his drummer. I got to meet Butch he was super nice. I truly enjoyed the concert. I put Butch’s talent up there with Gene and Buddy. He was a superior musician. Butch, Thank You for you drumming, energy and style. Tell Gene, Buddy, Maurice Purtill and all the other great drummers in Heaven hey! With Respect. Cliff
One of my favorite versions of this song, and the best of all the Count Basie ones I could find. Hard to find a drummer who appears to enjoy his job more (and plays with such verve; he looks a little like Boris Johnson playing Buddy Rich)...
Oddly enough, I heard Buddy wasn’t a fan of Butch, for some reason. I’ll give Butch this, minus the flair and flash, out of all the drummers the band has had, he sounds the closest to Sonny Payne (in my opinion). Sunny will always be the best Basie drummer.
@@JetFuelnSawDust this is my favorite! The band just seem to be in a special place that night. Butch attention to every detail of the bands phrasing is amazing! Swinging!th-cam.com/video/rMQwt3B3NRI/w-d-xo.html
Maybe, but Butch lost much of his energy of the early days, regrettably. Did you notice the drop in tempo after the piano intro? That should not happen. Listen to the old recording from the 50s: th-cam.com/video/zHZz4H56ux0/w-d-xo.html. Harold Jones did a much better job. The performance here is comparatively lame
This song has such a confident vibe and strut to it that I feel it makes me want to order a pair of mixed drinks and ask the lady across the bar to sit and talk or stand and dance
Bill Hughes (leader) Scotty Barnhart, Mike Williams, Shawn Edmonds, Endre Rice (trumpets) Clarence Banks, Dave Keim, Alvin Walker (tenor trombones), Barry Cooper (bass trombone) Doug Lawrence, Doug Miller (tenor saxophones), Marshall McDonald, Grant Langford (alto saxophones), John Williams (baritone saxophone) Tony Suggs (piano), Will Matthews (guitar), James Leary (bass), Butch Miles (drums) 2005
Some drummers concentrate on playing loud and fast, but the really good ones make music. Butch Miles is definite one of these. From time to time to amuse myself I make lists of my favorite musicians, ball players etc in addition to Butch the other four drummers are Joe Morelo, Louie Bellson, Shelly Manne, and Max Poach.
It appears that Butch didn't get the memo about which color shirt to wear ( just kidding, Butch is one of the all time great drummers and my favorite Basie drummer).
@@thenel2162 This was the way the version was on the old music when I played with Frank leading the band. But Blues in Hoss’s Flat was edited on the recording, Basie took out Frank’s tenor solo.
Best drum version of a classic. BOMBS!
I have never seen a drummer who enjoyed playing like this man. A great drummer
I saw Butch several times int he 70's-80's version of the band. He's a very musical drummer. Allot like Louie.
Most bands like this it's all about the trumpets but the drummer usually is very visible & the show stopper that the audience wants
I’ve played with Butch Miles a few times and we’re friends. That’s the way he is in life. A wonderful human being!
rip!
Layin back here is masterful
A sad day... Butch Miles passed away today, 2/2/23. A true force of nature on the drums! RIP, Butch.
Such a great talent....
I saw him play at the Guinness Jazz Club at Queen’s University Belfeat
El Count vive a travez de sus inimitables creaciones y esta tremenda orquesta, lo demuestra.

Fantastic listening! Butch Miles drives the band along nicely and with great taste! RIP Butch you'll be sorely missed

One of the best jazz drummer ever
I have my drumhead signed by Butch in 2010. He said, "Swing like you always swing."
LOVELY music! ❤
Great performance of one of my fav Basie numbers.... and the guy on the drums !! Just pure class.
I really enjoyed Tony Suggs playing, been listening to the Basie band since I was a kid in the 60's( my Dad's favorite ).
RIP Butch Miles ❤❤❤
man butch miles is such a dynamo!
My favorite version of this is on live in japan! The recording just caught the band on a very special night!
Yes!!!!!!!!
Butch Miles really kicks the band!
I had the honor and privilege to study under the great butch miles. He was my Advanced Jazz combo instructor and I miss him dearly
Part Buddy Rich, part Sonny Payne, Butch Miles was a giant of the Big Band drummers!
Timeless Classic!
Best drummer ever

OOPS I should have said Max Roach, the first and best ever drummer to come out of be bop.
And then at the end the leader/conductor should have said - Butch Miles!!!, Butch Miles , ladies and Gentlemen!

Ma786sai Dua Butch Miles doubtless received his other-worldly divine gift from a Source up Above
Did you spot the quotations? American In Paris and Just the Way You Look Tonight?
Very good version, but the real Basie band always played behind the beat which was unique. This version has the band ahead of the great Butch Miles.
Butch Miles looks like Dave Chappelle's friend in the movie "Half-Baked".
Phew. What a loss, Butch Miles, what a loss

The pianist was good, but but he didn't have Basie's "feel." The band still does, though. Butch Miles was superb throughout.
Not As Good As Original, With Count Basie.
the guitar lacks the subtle " presence " of the original cut .....( with Freddie GREEN
playing the acoustic archtop ) .
Well look at that......Marshall McDonald here....this is the ORIGINAL Frank Foster ARRANGEMENT, not Sammy's. we never played Sammy's.
frank fosters original cut down version! Which i will assume was edited by basie. At least i think thats right!
