The Dilla Feel (Hip Hop) - Daily Drum Lesson

  • In this Drum Lesson you will learn the Dilla Feel. This playing style is somewhere in between straight and swung. So you play your off beats between normal and shuffled 8th notes. It is often used in Hiphop and got its name from the legendary producer J Dilla.
    This feel is mostly associated with drummers like Chris Dave and Questlove from the Roots. There is also a great lesson about it here on TH-cam from an incredible drummer named Arthur "L.A." Buckner.

    Dilla often “rushed” his snare hits too which really added energy/urgency to the swing.

    Dilla opened up a new dimension to sample based - hardware drum programming. It's syncopation really, but wholly unique to him. It went on to influence actual drummers! It was similar to Larry Graham opening up an entire new dimension on the bass guitar a few decades earlier with his slapping and popping. Maybe it was accident, maybe it was fate. 20 years from now will someone unlock the secrets of some other instrument?

    Awesome, you totally nailed, but please tell me what instrument I have to move in the red marker's, the hihat, the snare drum or the bass drum????and is it forward the 16/5 or backward, for innstance in the first example once Dillaish, sounds like the second bassdrum of the third quarter hits before the hihat becouse you played the bass drum sooner or delayed the hihat?? or in the same third quarter you play the hihat sooner after the second bassdrum or I'm getting crazy!!!!

    Sau stark! Much love for playing all of these “in between and off beat stuff” live and simultaneously. I already recognized some of these elements in Hip hop in general, if you listen to the Lofi type beats today, they are messing around with that stuff most of all the time. and to program it in your DAW or on a sampler is one thing, hard enough i think! :D
    But to play it live on the Drums... puh, great skills, try maybe to break out from time to time, just when your brain is getting used to the drum pattern!
    Anyways, great Video!

    Great video! I love this feel. I've been meaning to say that while an intro sequence may seem important, I feel that it takes away from the overall quality of the video. I say get straight to the point and skip your intro. It can be especially draining when watching multiple videos in a row. If an intro is a must-have, perhaps consider a shorter (

    • @WhelanDrums
      @WhelanDrums 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just checked out your channel -- the 5 second intro isn't bad at all! But I'm all for removing it completely. With Daily Drum Lesson's intro, after four videos, I've watched the intro sequence for a solid minute. Just gets a bit repetitive. You might just consider doing a text overlay as the video starts if you feel the need to add that descriptive text. Good luck with your channel!
