My mother went to Buffalo state college, which is located just behind the asylum…in the late 1960s…. She said patients would escape the asylum frequently.. and they would be seen wondering around campus in their night gown type outfits… said it kinda creeped her out. Lol 😂

I grew up in buffalo, I’ve heard some story’s of the patients also impersonating students so they don’t have to go back 😂 crazy stuff

We broke in... I mean, we Toured this in the 90's. All the hospital stuff was still in there. Even the lobotomy table with ice pick. All the gurneys had restraints. I'm glad they did something with it. Most of our buildings are just crumbling

Within the last four years locally we lost the Allentown State Hospital. ALL the structures were raized.
Truly an irreplaceable complex. I'm glad to see New York State and the city of Buffalo chose another path.

I agree! I never got to see Allentown personally but everything I’ve read to the pictures I’ve seen of it, it was a devastating loss.

Nice, lived across the street on Rees Street in my childhood, when it was still operating....many a night could hear screams coming from this place ! You make a comment "look at this old lighting fixture"....imagine back when, there was no electricity, for about the first 30 years these buildings operated.

Easily one of the most beautiful and majestic hospitals I’ve gotten to photograph.

Cool to see this section. I was there back in May walking around in the main section of the hotel. Glad to see they’re restoring it. Some sections definitely had the hairs on my arms raising. lol
