I think what is more important than decluttering is, that we should try harder to not fall back into consumer traps... it is too easy and too tempting nowadays, especially when you live in a big city. Also - just dumping your stuff at the donation center ist very wasteful, because only 10 % will be sold, the rest ends in landfill... I think we should be more responsible once we got rid of our stuff (try to be responsible and not just throw it away... even though it takes more time, it took me 4 years and I'm still not at the end, hope with the last move it will. It`s about decluttering one last time for good.
A lot of people just declutter, to only hoard again few months later -only to throw stuff away, AGAIN. Minimalism is about ENDING this cycle and what lies beyond that declutter process - freedom, more money, time, mental clarity and energy.

I wish I could get my donations collected but non of the charity shops near me offer that service. I’ve decluttered about half of my stuff and it’s all in the hall waiting to be decantered to various local places but as I no longer have a car it’s taking an absolute age to take it in bags. I’ve got some things which are too big/heavy to carry but much too good to be thrown away but I can’t even offer “free for collection” where I live🤦‍♀️. It’s so frustrating because the clutter is driving me up the wall and I just want rid of it.

Eating healthy, non processed foods rather than fad dieting can really benefit everyone.. We have been eating non processed home cooked meals for years and years and our health remains well whereas family and friends who partake in processed foods and eat out frequently are overweight and have many ailments. We know what you and we are doing is best because my partner used to be an 'eat out' over indulging person when it came to food and was getting really overweight, ill from eating poor choices and sluggish mentally and physically as he was aging. Changing this behavior to healthy eating changed his health for the better though he still struggles with the mental components of wanting to eat addictive, toxic foods. You don't have to love to cook to eat healthy. You don't have to be high income to eat healthy. You just have to educate yourself about food nutrition, buy those inexpensive foods, cook them and retrain the mind, body and spirit to love and favor them over toxic foods because you want to be and feel healthy and enjoy the health benefits of a healthy mind and body. Nice to read about your success.

Joining a Buy Nothing community online has been the most helpful thing for me. When a neighbor wants or needs something I find it easy to share and I often add to the pile of things I had offered once I see that someone is excited to take them and use them. It also allows me to ask for things when needed so I don’t feel like I need to keep everything “just in case” - a neighbor will lend or give what I need if they can. It’s more work than donating but it’s also rewarding.

Oh boy is this true!! For years, I was constantly organizing! Bringing things from room to room, upstairs to downstairs...feeling accomplished, but that feeling didn't last long.....I wasn't getting the satisfaction of REALLY doing anything productive! So now that we own less, I don't have to constantly organize THINGS! Life is good!

I read something very similar to that in the book "A Passionate Apprentice", the eary diaries of the British author Virginia Woof, from 1897 to 1909. The author grew up in a house with widowed/remarried parents and children from three marriages. When the parents had died, Virignia's sister had to hire men to smash some of the furniture in what must have been a house jammed with belongings, parents, children and servants. No wonder Virginia Woolf shared your father's view about possessions possessing people!

@@TheDriftwoodlover I was born in 1961 but have been told I act like someone who lived the Depression. One of my favorite books that I own is "Stories of Thrift for Young Americans" published in 1915 and wortwhile today. Each chapter is a story and one is about how the father in a family or several of the neighborhood fathers aren't bringing in as much money because of a slow work time so the children start the Making Over Club to see who can go the longest without buying new clothes. The children talk about how clothes can be altered and trimmed and re-used. I think it's in that chapter also how they talk about growing their own vegetables. Those plans and ideas are good even today. I never minded wearing hand-me-downs!

I have been on a decluttering/minimizing journey for a couple of years now. Your videos, blog, and books have been very helpful. My life feels light and peaceful now. Cleaning is so quick and easy. I have time for things I enjoy that I never used to have time for. What’s interesting is, I haven’t even missed anything I’ve gotten rid of. The other day, I took a bin of clothes to goodwill and gave them the whole thing, bin and all. Didn’t need it anymore.

You just helped me make a decision. I scrapbook memories and I purchase paper, punches, other supplies because they look nice, yet I haven't even worked on old projects with what I have for over 6 months. Plus I need to declutter my craft room to do any work. So...no more purchases for now, not until I really need them. Thank you for your wonderful advice.

Just as simple as the 2 bras that I always wear and are simple and comfortable versus the other 8 that I keep to a special dress or occasion that doesn't happen in years! And in the meanwhile I'm keeping things that don't serve me and even make me feel somewhat uncomfortable 🙄. Like the pencils and pens that I don't use but think that my daughters (who don't live with me anymore) or their future kids😃😐 will find very useful. No! I'm going to give them to the school for whoever wants it now! (And if someday I have grandchildren I will buy them their favourite pencils and make it an important event 🥰) Thanks for all your good advice

I always thought I was a minimalist but my daughter said I was a very organized hoarder. In the spring I sold furniture and gave many items to friends. I moved in July. Well it seems I did not downsize nearly enough. I have been selling things on facebook marketplace for several months. I have made many trips to Salvation Army to donate. Tomorrow a computer desk and matching storage pantry style cabinet will be picked up. In the next few months I will evaluate all my clothes and donate what I do not wear. It is liberating.

"It doesn't matter, so much, how you remove unneeded possessions from your home, as long as you do it" I agree. There's so many theories out there on the right way to purge your room, home, closet, etc, that it can make you get stuck on the process, instead of just getting it done. I've used so many ideas to collect the stuff to donate, but in the end, what matters is that it's gone. I have also sold some stuff, but mostly I don't want to deal with having people come to my house, so I donate. Someone who needs it more that I do, will appreciate it.

I joined a neighborhood Buy Nothing group and have helped so many people and been helped by many. It's crazy how many things we need are sitting on a shelf in our neighbor's garage and they want to get rid of it.
I live in Miami and don't ever need a heavy coat. But I was traveling to Chicago for Thanksgiving and needed one for the trip. A neighbor who just moved to Miami from NYC was happy to lend me one for three days.
That's $300 staying in my pocket and closet space saved.

Excellent advice. Making a peaceful house permanently peaceful is a good goal. For me, peace comes with fewer things (which means fewer things to organize), so I have to work on de-cluttering and on not bringing things into my house that I will then have to organize. Many thanks for another great video!

For the first time i watched a few episodes of the Hoarders series. The sheer number of possessions and garbage filling these homes from top to bottom is mind blowing. I thought it would make me feel better about my space but i e seem over the past couple years how easy it is to have things like empty boxes fill up the home. Especially with the immense stress from the world and being a single mom phd student I’ve come to rely on meal kits food delivery and amazon. There are times tbh that literal trash (not garbage), scraps of paper, mail wrap, empty boxes can just lay in the floor where it falls and stay for days, no one picks it up if I don’t. In short I didn’t feel better i felt worse because it’s easy to see how stuff accumulates if you aren’t on ongoing guard. I could imagine my home getting to crazy levels, maybe not level 4 or 5 hoarding scale but there are times i have felt buried in clutter and it’s a source of daily stress. It also saddens me to think how 100 tons of crud may be removed from just one property on the show. Times that by millions and that s filling our landfill and planet. No wonder the earth is in such a state.

1 trip a week to a donation center with one box or bag is a very good motivating tool, especially if you pick a day of the week and stick to it, just like you would for a city garbage collection schedule. Just a suggestion: Try to favour charity shops that have a drop off area OUTSIDE of the store, so that you're not tempted to go in and shop some more.

Hi Joshua, I donated a lot recently, I have trouble letting go of items but when I brought a pair of horse riding boots down to the charity shop the lady working there was so happy and said she was going to give them to a little girl with special needs and it would help this family out because they had not much money. Also my son had so much lego he is grown up now so I gave it to a neighbour he stopped his car and all his grandchildren thanked me, you are so right it is better to give away items than have them sitting in an attic or on a shelf. I am going to do more de-owning it gives you a feeling of freedom and wellbeing knowning someone can benefit from your items. Thank you for the lovely message.
