    An Amish man was once asked, "What is the biggest difference between the Amish and everybody else." The man said, "When we discover something that distracts us from the things that are most important: God, relationships, and our work, we actually get rid of the distractions. " Something to ponder.

    I am heading out on a road trip on Saturday. Driving over 2000 miles to empty out and get rid of a storage unit of stuff that I haven’t seen or used in over a year. I plan to listen to all of your books on Audible on the road trip out to keep myself focused and encouraged to get the job done. I’m in the middle of decluttering at the moment. I picked 3 areas of the home to start with: under the sink, the pantry and as daft as it sounds the fridge and freezers. All ready it’s spurring me on.
    I have donated of all the bedding ( it’s years old but still ok) and replaced it with new stuff but only 2 of each and better quality.
    This has been money well spent as far as the minimalistic thought process for me to change - tidy house, tidy mind 👍

    I really hope that Joshua's deep version of minimalism will one day become a worldwide social movement!
    It seems to me that here in Switzerland the focus is still on superficial aspects like reduction of possessions to 40 black items, tiny houses, lifestyle design etc..

    • @drbenirusani
      @drbenirusani ปีที่แล้ว

      What is “deep” minimalism?

    • @sunnystring64
      @sunnystring64 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drbenirusani Thanks for your asking! It means to me "not being reduced to trivial material possessions" but being spiritually embedded. In Joshua's case in christianity.
      "Deep" to me also means the environmental and political significance of minimalism.

      @@drbenirusani Thanks, Beni! Worse, I'm from the small, rich Switzerland😉So, we really need minimalism!!! Much more than you do in Malaysia, I guess. Unfortunately, the more people have the more they want. Here we drown in possessions and distractions...

    • @drbenirusani
      @drbenirusani ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sunnystring64 haha on the contrary. I think the opposite might be true as well. The Poor tend to hold onto their material possession because of the insecurity tomorrow might bring.
      I’m not sure whether this is a fact, but is it true in Switzerland MOST people renting, instead of buying houses - which I think is a good idea, in terms of reducing ownership of material.
      Here most still trying to buy.

    I need to get back to watching minimalism videos like this. I've began to wonder if I have adhd - I have many of the organisational difficulties - and when I was getting into minimalism in my lifestyle a few years ago, I was doing best. You have been one of the key influences for me on this. It was that preach you have online about giving away your possessions and kingdom of God. It restored my faith a little bit, and made me see the effect my messy environment was having on me and the potential minimalism could possess to improve my quality of life and happiness, even bring me more purpose and combat depressed feelings. So that and other videos encouraged me to declutter my room at my parents' house and my things, to the point where I'm able to keep up with cleaning, know what I have and that I don't really need to buy anything, better able to relax and feeling more in control. Which - if I have adhd - relaxing and feeling in control can be hard. I haven't thought about minimalism in this way in a while but I noticed that I have earlier adopted many of these tips mentioned on the video and still do them. I notice tv is the biggest distraction for me currently because I'm living with my parents and my mother watches tv a lot, and I do that with her as a way to spend time together. It would be better if we found a way to be more active on our freetime.

    when I burned out, a few years ago, My situation was so bad that I decided to get rid of as much distractions as I could. I used all of the ones you are recomending, and it was like fresh water in the desert. I also recomend to mute your T.V. during advertisements (when someone in your house can´t live with out T.V.), unfollow as much as you can in your social media or even not sing in or get rid of your account if you can. Start reading something different at what you are used to, and solwy, finding your own rhythm, pausing every time you need. Stop listening to news, the radio or even music, unless you do it with intention and to practice mindfulness.

      Start with one small spot. A tabletop, or other surface. Don’t look at anything else. Clean it all up and only keep what you NEED. It builds momentum and you’ll find it easier to attack another spot, but don’t look ahead to what is still to be done. There’s that saying about focusing on the mountains ahead makes you ignore the ones you’ve climbed.

    I think my issue is, I don’t know what to do in this spare time I’ve freed up. Im usually too tired from walking the dog, going to the gym, cleaning up, that all the time after lunch all I feel I have energy for is watching tv (I work in public service - without saying what it is, it’s a very active and mentally stressful job 40-50 hours a week). So, I guess my question is… what do I do, when I now have nothing to do, when I don’t want to do things I should do?

      You should realize that rest is productive..... i work in a hospital, and someday are just go go go, multitasking, and problems solving, mostly completing tasks I know how to perform, but as fast S possible while performing 3 other tasks. I can't change the job, and you can't change the responsibilities you have in life, but in order to continue doing the job quickly and without error, I MUST take a break, sit and eat, and then get back to it.
      Research SABBATH, and the meaning and purpose. Rest every day, and rest every week. When you are working you will be more productive and focused.

      I love reading a book (it does take practice to keep your attention on it if you’re used to tv, but setting a small goal, say “I’ll read ten pages before I put this book down” is helpful to build the habit. Also just sitting on my porch enjoying the fresh air is wonderful. Doing nothing. It’s a lost art, daydreaming. Keep in mind if you’re used to zoning out on “easy” stuff like tv it takes a bit of practice to be ok with reading or just sitting, but it is way more refreshing.

    I am thinking it would be more realistic change the list - do 5 to 10 minute projects regularly. Projects always take more time to accomplish than planned for.
