You're bringing tons of old and obscure knowledge to people new and old with an interest in preserving these wonderful vintage models, Speaking personally before I found this channel getting the right information and guidance was a mire of ancient thread diving and conflicting instructions from said places, It can't be understated the value these videos hold. If you want to monetize them I'm there 110% I'll be more happy to suffer the wee ad here and there and whatever else if I know it's going to continued productions of OOBill

Afternoon 00Bill from sunny Stirling where I’m working today lol 😂 What a brilliant idea asking for money to repair locomotives as your time is precious and the skill and workmanship you put into these videos for us deserves a little financial support 👍🏻 Layout is looking great too 😄

This seems a good opportunity for a general thank you for all the videos- I have watched a lot without commenting and they have been a combination of informative, encouraging and also strangely soothing thanks to your laid back presentation!
Good luck with the retirement, glad to see it will give you more time for the railways.

No TH-camr wants to monetize their passion projects; but with TH-cam now putting their own ads on whatever video they like, you'd indeed be daft not to.
Cheers, looking forward to the tender fitting video!

Nothing wrong with that Bill, you do a great job keeping everyone’s passion for model railways alive and have no doubt spurred folk on to either rekindle their old railway or start a new one.
A whole hearted thumbs up to you.

You should definitely charge for fixing locomotives- time is precious. I have learnt so much from watching your videos - I think it is your calm methodical approach that is the key !

Just thinking about your tender pickup system might make an interesting video. I have been upgrading LNER Teak coaches with Seraphim Sepia shades from Citadel paints and painting the interior etc and also adding lights. I remember you said you used guitar string, so I tried this, and it works rather well. So, if you could share your pickup method, it would probably be helpful to a lot of people.

The Layout is really coming to life, and the Success of your Channel is Testament to your Hard Work and Dedication to the Hobby - Nobody Expects anything to be Free these days, especially when it has Value such as this - PO Box is a Gr8 idea which I have had experience with, and keeps the clutter out of the Family’s way - Looks like you Got your Retirement Sorted Brother, Awesome 🙌🏻

Hi Bill, I have been retired 8?years now and always find something to do around the station, never bored.
Well done on the monetization, the 4k hirs is the big obstacle and, as you found out it is a lot of work.
I also modified a wagon to a tender for my 0-4-0 but have yet to add pick ups.
I think you are doing the right thing by implementing a charge for servicing/repairing locos. It is only fair that you are compensated for your time and effort. What the viewers don’t see is your search and ordering/payment for parts required to complete the repair, not to mention the time and effort to video, edit and posting time.
Great to see your efforts coming to fruition and wishing you all the best moving forward.
I have a few locos which I am not sure if I can fix, unfortunately the cost of postage two ways ruins the bargain.
I might have to send you some questions/photos in order to resolve.
The layout looks better every time you post a new video 👍

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. I did it a couple of years ago & highly recommend it. The only disadvantage is all those projects you were putting off, well now you don’t have any excuses! I will be very interested in the pug tenderisation as I have several I need to do. PS Will the train cam be able to get through the tunnels?

Monetising the channel and charging for repair services once you retire sounds like the obvious decision. You have the followers so make the most of it.

Bill, freebies don't come cheap, decide on an hourly rate, plus parts, including grease oil etc, shipping and packaging materials, lets say 1 hour to strip clean and repair parts, repack and transport to the Post office, again including time. Another way would be a base fee £10.00, for exam etc, repairs at cost, possibly another £10.00, plus post pack and dispatch

You'll be looking forward to retirement, and you should be paid for the repairs you do. As stated, you're workmanship is first class, at a professional level, and the extra cash would make it all worthwhile. Good point on filming V not filming repairs. Get locos done without the challenge of filming and editing. Great plans ahead for you, good luck with it all. I'll be in touch. 👍

I have learnt so much from your channel, thank you and I wish you all the best for your retirement. You will probably find it to be the best job you’ve ever had! As for the monetising of the channel, I don’t think any of us is going to object to you doing that. It seems only fair that you should gain some financial benefit from all this work, especially when we are all benefiting from your “consultancy”! All the best.

Congrats on your future retirement from the USA Bill!! May you have many years of enjoyment and relaxation.
Yeah, I agree, you need to monetize and put a fee on the repairs. You do such great wonders on some of what gets sent to be fixed, Your efforts have definite value!
Best of luck getting it all set up.
Layout coming along well, like the new ideas!

Hi there Bill ,, I totally understand that you may have to monetize your channel and hey why not as everyone elde does so why not you too.
To be honest I have not ever payed for any channels subscriptions but imwould certainly consider paying for your channel as I get soo much knowledge from your wisdom and handy tips.
In the few years since my mum passesd away(July 2020) and I have yet again taken up the hobby as it was one of her last wishes before she passed away. She said to me , buy some trains as I know they make you happy and they really do make me happy.
I am so glad that that you started this channel for us to watch and enjoy as you really have taught me heaps about everything loco and carriages and model trains in general.
I did have a bit of knowledge of trains as I had them since I was 6 yo and built a pretty good collection then my granpa wanted the room back in his workshop so had to sell them and also lost interest as I got a job working on the railways and the last tging I wanted to look at another bloody train when i got home from work.
Soo in my ealry 20's I started my own scrap metal business and started buying trains again and getting back into the love of trains again and massed a good collection and bango just like that the 2008/9 GFC happened and had a choice to sell the house or the trains so the trains lost yet again.
I still have the house and it has quintupled in value since the gfc days so it was a good move.
Ok so Fast forward to 2020 when mum passed away I got back into it again and I am where I am now and it is thanks to people like you to help me get them going and repairing them so I dont have to spend a fortune for someone else to fix them so I now do it all myself and yet again its a big thanks thaks to you and all the other train nuts out there that like to fix train stuff.
Im soo glad that you started your channel as i said before it is soo bloody helpful and ai look forward to your video's coming out to see what I can learn from you this week.
As for the ads well they are on nearly every other channel anyways so whats a few more and the more I alook into it I might even pay not to see the ads as I do watch a fair bit of TH-cam now that im retired.
Soo good luck with it all Bill.
I am sure you will make the right decision and if dosent work and you make a few mistakes here and there well thats how we all learn to do good and there is always other ways to make a few bucks too if needed.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

I'd charge for repairs if I were you, it's a valuable service. Re: monetizing videos, I pay for premium so it wouldn't affect me lol go for it. Seriously though you're probably the best train content I subscribe to, I've fixed my childhood models by following your examples (mostly Lima). Best of luck to you mate

  • @_RandomPea
    @_RandomPea หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeh, get the money rolling in mate, an ad here and there is annoying but not enough to not watch.
The river scene is interesting, I've just started to get mine ready for scenics. I plan to use layers of PVA, see loads of others using resin. What will you go for?
The layout looks brilliant, you must be loving how it's turning out. That onboard camera shot was brilliant, what did you use for that? 📽️

All interesting stuff Bill. All I will say is if you are in the youtube game then no problem you playing the youtube game and monetizing. I will still be here come what and totally understand where you will be next year as I got to that point last year. Funds suddenly much in decline. I wish you all the best with that and have no doubt you will be fine. Nice update also.

Hi Bill you have a great skill and you should be looking to charge a reasonable fee for your time and skills.
Not everyone has tyour skills so people like myself watch you to learn..
So I hope you can make your hobby generate a realistic incoime for you.
In which case.. I have recently bought a Dapol Class 52 renamed and renumbered Dapol code 4D-003-011 which I understand can sometimes be grumpy on certain track.. I am in the process of rebuilding my layout and am changing over to code 75 Peco Streamline from code 100. Also the model has been on display and unused for most of its life so I thought you might be able to give it a good service and advise me re the wheel sets, and do I need to invest in a new set ?
Please let me know what you would charge for such a service ?
Meanwhile I will continue to marvel at your skills and patience with small fiddly things.. from a man with big fingers and poor eyesight.. Rgds Mark

I’m surprised there was no charge for repairs, costs at least especially as you are not monetising your videos. I’ve tried to support the channel with some donations, glad I have finding this out. Enjoy your retirement, hope to be not far behind you.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  หลายเดือนก่อน

I do charge a small amount to cover return postage, materials used etc it's not entirely free but I don't really make money from the repairs. In fact on a few occasions I've been very much out of pocket! So the plan in future is to tighten that up but still charge as little as possible.
