  • Reconstruction in the South, immigration in the North, and expansionism in the West - the first generation of suffragists faced geographic and political division.
Learn more about THE VOTE, including where to watch the film: www.pbs.org/wg...
One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote - a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.
In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle for the vote also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy.
Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for - and against - women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then - and continue to dominate political discourse today.

Very disgusting to know Susan B. Anthontly asked Frederick Douglass to remove himself from the suffrage movement. Everyone deserves the right to vote. Equality for all people!

I do not think so. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth S. wanted universal suffrage, They refused to support male suffrage without women suffrage.

@@ronronsrampage Wow, where did you get that gem? I researched and studied Miss Anthony for over a year to restore the interiors of her home, the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, NY. When I say I studied her for over a year, that means 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I was in charge of her archives at the museum and had unlimited access to her personal writings held in other locations. Those letters are not public. Miss Anthony as well as most other women wanted the vote for all Americans. They did not want it to be split for African American men, but for ALL. Miss Anthony was arrested in her living room for the simple act of voting. She was dear friends with Frederick Douglass and they spent many, many hours discussing the right to vote for ALL. Before you show your ignorance on a subject, I suggest you fact check your sources. Mine are from Miss Anthony's own hand.

Yup! Susan B " KAREN" Anthony. A white female supramist is what she really was. History books should erase Susan completely.
