Hi, WOW what memories; at 3:10 this is Combs Pit; Thornhill on The Common. I was born in Combs House, 98 The Common in 1947; Combs House was directectly facing the pit; my late parents owned Combs House together with a number of properties including a huge building that was used by the pit brass band for practicing; my late grandfather played the trombone and both my late father and grandfather were coal miners. I've worked at Grange Ash colliery Grange Moor then Caphouse Colliery. Wormald & Walker (Dormy); Fenton & Bradley fine worsteds and also as a bus conductor. I've watched TH-cam videos of how Dewsbury now is and I'm truly appalled; Dewsbury is still Dewsbury but it's the people who have changed allowing Dewsbury to return to it's slum status; those in charge should be ashamed of themselves and get out of their comfortable offices leaving their white sticks behind to open their eyes. Start charging the people who are making the mess to clear it up; stop the trouble at source not support these people by tidying up after them; apathy appears to rule and by what I see now as an outsider it's not going to get better any time soon. Huddersfield is no better with cyclists being welcome but car owners treated like they carry a disease; I've not visited Dewsbury Town center for over 40 years and never ever visit Huddersfield Town Center because I own a car not a cycle so I'm unwelcome. Many thanks for posting this nostalgia; as a child I and all my school chums played out down Mill Bank and on the disused railway line by the cricket ground building tree houses; Mill Bank is still a wonderful unspoiled bit of countryside but I've not had time to enjow a walk down there for about six years; parking at the top of The Rectory and walking down past the moat into Mill Banks is always pleasant and often I don't meet anyone; I return via Combs Pit and wander through the Church yard then back to the car. In those long ago times no one had money; computers were a thing of the future as were washing machines and until I was five we didn't even have electricity just cold water and gas; our door was never locked because we had nothing of value to steal; food was a luxury and clothes handed down; somehow these days when often benefits pay out more for being at home than working people seem miserable; they complain at £26,000 per year benefit saying they are living in poverty; they haven't a clue what poverty is whilst using their mobile phones and wall to wall TV; enough of this; how much would it cost to get Dewsbury cleaned up and get rid of the druggies and alcoholics; don't people of Dewsbury have any pride these days? Is anyone actually in charge in Dewsbury?
Absolutely beautiful
