  • The video today is a showdown between two different DIY needle wheel impeller designs. Which needle wheel will be crowned the champion the single layer or double layer needle wheel impeller? Let me know what you think about the needle wheel impeller performance and which one you think performed better.

      AlexGs Aquarium I definitely think you need to keep sprinkling these in. And I doubt the wife will be embarrassed; she'll definitely see the artistic side of it and fully commend you...sounds most likely, right?

      Thanks ReeferGil. The double layer has a couple of advantages but they are both good designs.

    An idea for future video - what you feed (some do DIY food), and how. And show us your puppies getting excited over supper.

    Awesome video Alex. Love the beginning. I was really surprised at how close they performed to each other. It would interesting to get a measurement from a flow meter on each one

      Thanks for the comment Kelly's Reef. I would be interesting to see the results of a flow meter on these pumps with the different impellers. I wonder though where the best placement for a flow meter would be on the intake or output of the pump.

    I think the double layer worked better on low speed then high speed

    Can you explain the setup of this venturi's?Do you have any videos on how to make one?

  • @MarKDoesKeto
    @MarKDoesKeto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Use a Kill-a-watt to know if they use less/more power at the same setting - I have a feeling one might be more efficient on High, and the other on Low. As for durability - who cares! It's DIY, you'll want something to do, down the road! (lol)
    Maybe one of the impellers will require more amps (thus more watts) on startup, then will probably "idle" the same.

      @algawura2  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might have to get a kill-a-watt to perform this test at some point. It would be interesting to see if there is a difference in power draw on startup and idle.

      That's what I was wondering too. My guess is that the double layer design uses more power because it seems to be moving more water.

    for me, i would go with the "double layer"

      Thanks for commenting AQUARISTIK INNOVATION. The DIY needle wheels in this video were not 3D printed. I built them using acrylic sheet and acrylic rods. Here is the playlist that covers their construction th-cam.com/video/-f8wUfHr-Ag/w-d-xo.html

      @@algawura2 thanks for letting me know. By chance have you looked at 3D printing them?

    • @algawura2
      @algawura2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not looked into 3D printing these impellers. I don't have access to a 3D printer so I utilized the tools I had on hand to build these impellers. I have seen several examples though of 3D printed needle wheel impeller designs on the forums and online while I was researching needle wheel impellers. The double layered needle wheel I created was inspired by a 3D printed impeller.

    I really liked your video. Your production is great and you have been doing a great job with your DIY work. I only hope I can soon produce videos as nice as yours.
    Only a few notes as to the technical aspects of the testing. Not sure if you noticed but the output of one pumps had a pvc pipe in the fitting.
    Also while comparing the two wheels with the 1 inch venturi's not all the pvc fittings were the same. When doing a heads up comparison everything needs to be identical accept what is being tested. So it's hard for me to tell if it was a draw because I don't know if they both have the same amount of air draw allowable and if the pipe in the output fitting has affected anything. Maybe redo those parts and edit them into your video. Sorry but it would help me greatly to know if it had any affect. I know my DIY testing isn't perfect by any means but I try.

    • @algawura2
      @algawura2  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment JoeKooL Reefvid. I am glad you enjoyed the video. While PVC fittings were not identical the water intake is reduced from 2" to 1" for the venturi so the water intake should not really be limited by the extra fitting. I can see performing this test again in the future though with the exact fittings on each pump. It should be noted though that even with the extra fitting on the double layer needle wheel impeller pump intake it still seemed to produce more overall water flow than the single layer impeller. When both pumps were on the 1" venturi the allowable air draw should have been the same. I don't think that the 1" venturi air intake was needed though as the 1/2" venture seemed to draw a similar amount of air into the impeller based on the suction created by the pump. Really airflow and water flow should be measured to see what the actual differences are between these two impellers. I definitely have some refinements to work on the next time I complete impeller testing.

    Should of had a distance or height test. Or put something on n front to test the pressure .like a scale. The double layers needles are stronger and stiffer. Won't break needles like the single
