While this video made some interesting points, I think there are more constructive ways to advance an argument about lawn care than using this approach. It comes across as condescending at times, and basically accuses some of the most helpful and engaging lawn TH-camrs with lying, or something not far from it. Meanwhile, he doesn't offer advice about the *proper* way to conduct and interpret a soil test for a homeowner. Why not? Shouldn't that be a fundamental part of his argument? Without offering it, the credibility of his own claims are a bit suspect.

I am all for debunking misinformation, 100%. I do worry about this type of content though. Not for the sake of the individuals or companies being called out or corrected, but the audience you've already amassed and the queued videos you have. It appears that you are ensuring that you are unbiased and logical, almost robotically (which I assume is intentional), so I want to make sure you cover a few points, if I may:
    1. Remember that some info presented by individuals may be anecdotal and was never intended to be pushed as fact or backed by claims - in some cases it's the viewers that turn this info into "fact". I understand the need to debunk this info, but remembering how it became "common knowledge" in the first place is a good way to help people understand why it is wrong and correct
    2. DIY lawn care enthusiasts sometimes want and even need incredibly basic info to work with - in some cases this is why info is presented in an incredibly, sometimes stupid way. Just look at the creation of 4 step programs and dumbed down soil tests. DIY and homeowners dont want info presented in the same way a Turf Manager or Soil Scientist want or need it. Some of the points in the video seem to assume that these guys are presenting this info to pros and not DIY guys. Tell us dummies why something is wrong, then tell us the right info in a way that is easily absorbed, not just in a way that can be appreciated by people that know how to accurately read scientific studies. This is not an excuse for companies to pander to this and do what MySoil does (for example) with their "numbers", but again, it helps to understand the why.
    3. Make sure that if you are going after TH-camrs, you are unbiased in that approach. So far you only have 3 videos, and I know you picked big guys because that gets butts in seats and all that, but don't forget that there are dozens of big and medium guys out there that get tons of views that also share misinformation or overly-dumbed down info. You know who I'm talking about.
These arent demands or anything like that, just kind of a brain dump of things this video made me think about.

Mineralization and nutrient cycling improve significantly when soils are alive. Maintaining a living soil often requires that rates of high-analysis synthetic fertilizer and other chemicals be reduced, to enable a diverse population of microbes and micro fauna to carry out their specific and numerous functions.
No amount of NPK fertilizer can compensate for compacted, lifeless soil with low wettability and low water-holding capacity. In fact, adding more chemical fertilizer often makes things worse. This is particularly so for inorganic nitrogen and inorganic phosphorus. An often overlooked consequence of the application of high rates of N and P is that plants no longer need to channel photosynthetic compounds (liquid carbon) to soil microbial communities in order to obtain these essential elements. Reduced carbon flow has a negative impact on soil aggregation - as well as limiting the energy available to the microbes involved in the acquisition of important minerals and trace elements. Lack of trace elements increases the susceptibility to pests and diseases.
I’m glad that you mentioned the detrimental ecological/environmental consequences of the over application of P. However this also rings true for functionality within the soil ecosystem itself as well as the physiological functions of the plants :
The application of large quantities of water-soluble P inhibits the production of strigolactone, an important plant hormone that increases root growth, root hair development and colonization by mycorrhizal fungi, enabling plants to better access soil P. (Link to journal below) The long-term consequences of the inhibition of strigolactone include destabilization of soil aggregates, increased soil compaction and mineral-deficient plants.
In addition to having adverse effects on soil structure and aquatic ecosystems, the application of inorganic water-soluble phosphorus is highly inefficient. At least 80% of applied P rapidly adsorbs to aluminium and iron oxides and/or forms calcium, aluminium, manganese or iron phosphates. In the absence of microbial activity, these forms of P are not plant available.
It is widely recognized that only 10-15% of P found in conventional fertilizer is taken up by crops in the year of application. If P fertilizer has been applied for the previous 10 years, there will be sufficient amounts for the next 100 years, regardless of how much was in the soil to begin with. Rather than continually adding P, it may prove more sensible to manage land in ways that support the soil microbes able to access ‘locked up’ soil P.
Mycorrhizal fungi are extremely important for increasing the availability of soil P. Their abundance can be significantly increased by taking a more ecologically minded approach to soil rather than a soil test that is funded by the industry and adhering to the old model of “my soil test says I’m low in this so I need to add THIS to make it “work” better”.

He tells me it should be below 180. He says it should be somewhere around 120. And he gives me insulin to help me accomplish those numbers. So I try to keep my numbers in the right areas. I do realize and appreciate that many have made emotional attachments to the things they believe. This can make unbiased fact checking unpopular with some as it hits too close to home. How often should this product be put down? Does the ratio ever change throughout? I've used My Soil and my local ext. via UGA, and UGA wins for the reasons mentioned. Plus, it is at least half the price of My Soil! An argument I have heard Allan mention for My Soil is that university tests can be confusing and offer generic recommendations. I can't speak for all, but UGA does go generic in that it just offers ratios in the recommendations. It also offers intervals. It isn't that difficult for the consumer to make a choice purchase based on NPK ratios, but everything is preference I guess.

Good video. I did one "spendy" mySoil test on my lawn and never felt it provided info that I would make realistic use from. It did indicate that my soil is more alkaline (higher pH) than I expected. I never repeat tested with mySoil so I guess my gut feeling was on the right track? I read more and retested through Waypoint which I did get a soil composition analysis and confirmed high pH. I found that info to be useful but specifically in terms of how long additives remain active in the root zone, degrade, or move past. So are we better served to forego soil testing and follow the annual fertilizer rates that appear in major university studies?

"So are we better served to forego soil testing and follow the annual fertilizer rates that appear in major university studies?"
That's precisely the problem with this kind of video. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and attack people but quite another to make an affirmative statement about what should be done. If you have questions about soil tests, I think you'd have a better chance getting reliable information on what to do from university extension offices that offer those tests.

Well I would actually say that the information that Turf truth provides regarding misinformation is the original content. As for the reason of not showing their face it's because people in The Lawn Care Community have attacked whole families over things like this. If you are part of the Lawn Care community you probably know about that situation. If you're not part of the community don't worry yourself about it. Turf truth seems to be just debunking misinformation and backing it with science that they cite. So instead of just being hyped up and sold something lured in with confidence and unknowingly deceived I'm happy that Turf truth is providing this information for those who care enough to learn about it. This isn't an attack on anyone this is simply taking science and debunking some of these undercover sales pitches spreading inaccurate information.

Anyone can read documented university research tests and trials. The problem with what is happening in the ytube lawn game is people are “believing” in a product only because of the good feeling it provides. Facts are what makes agronomy successful. Anyone can read online published material. Yes, TT has apparently credentials but it is based on facts not belief. So, what does someone needing credentials have to due with making this video if the links provided point to facts? Read people and get knowledge.

    • @HungrySoutherner
      @HungrySoutherner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@Blubaugh5 my opinion is you're missing the point. There is a concept called the "appeal to authority fallacy" , it's the undertone of 99% of the TH-cam videos being made about turf from people with zero background in soil science or agronomics. It's the "buy my stuff because I know what I'm talking about, or looking at my lawn" mentality. This is the opposite of that, the person behind TurfTruth isn't appealing to his or her authority, but relying on published scientific work and textbook agronomics. I would take that a step further in that I believe whoever this is wants "You" the viewer to step out of the easy mindset of just tell me what to do and buy, and instead do the hard thing of gaining the knowledge about the subject through academic debate and scientific principles. I think this person would welcome you engaging in that debate. If you have a published paper or statistically significant evidence, that isn't anecdotal, that speaks otherwise on this subject about soil resin testing or methodology they welcome the notion that their mind can be changed. Science changes everyday. Some university or research institute could very well be doing studies right now trying to understand the parameters and use cases that would apply to resin testing for turf grass such that it becomes a valuable tool, but someone has to do that work so that it transitions from marketing gimmick to a useful measuring tape. The fact that this person(s) doesn't want to engage in the public image war on social media, speaks more to the fact that they have to work harder to provide evidence in defense of their opinions. Its honorable to think that a person without expressed direct financial interest is trying to bring some fun and deeper education to a space that left unchecked leads to fewer products being available from poor application, more regulations and miss information about products and practices that provide little to know value because they lack tested evidence.
