Lug Sail Reefing... How Quick?

  • Hey guys!
    I get asked often how long it takes to reef my GIS's lug sail so I though I should make a quick video showing you, in real time, exactly how long it takes me to put a reef on and how long it takes to shake it out too. Although I'll clock it I I will NOT rush it, I'll do it just as I usually do it when needed.
    Sea conditions might interfere with time too since if it's really rough one needs to take a bit more care pointing the boat and raising sail but this will give you an Idea.
    For timing purposes I'll consider "reefing" from the time just before I lower sail to having the sail back up ready to sail.
    Enjoy!

    Excellent video technique! Your multiple cameras and great instruction/delivery by the talent(you) is wonderful gift...controlling the skiff while doing everything needed to raise sail, making ship-shape
    to luffing is really huge...thank you! Lans

    Thank you. The reef doesn't go around the boom, just the sail. but the aft one does. Thanks for that. plus other things i learned form just watching your setup.

      I'm glad it was helpful!
      If you tie the reef ties around the boom it will put pressure on a very small patch on the sail which is not prepared to take big forces.
      just compare the reinforcement of the tack or the clew with the reef points. Also if you capsize and fall on the sail it would most likely rip it! 😉

      It is easy and simple, it just takes some practicing now and again. 😉

    A great public service.
    Nice with all the debugging you have done
    If you end up in a difficult situation you know exactly what to do.
    1 min and 2 Minnie excellent. Shows the value of practice and troubleshooting.

      Thanks Michael!
      I still have a few ideas to make it quicker but how long it takes will always depend on how rough it actually is.
      With strong wind and heavy chop things have to be timed differently.
      But you are right, practicing is a must! 😉

      @@TheBoatRambler Yes exactly. A few times with my BETH canoe I just wanted the sail right down until the worst of the wind came and went. And then put up the smallest amount of sail possible to get to where I was going.

      Hi Paul!
      it all comes down to simplifying as much as possible (within reason) and the more times you do it the better and quicker it goes, as well as showing you where improvements can be made. I'm sure you'll be reefing faster than a F1 pit stop soon! 😁

    I understand this just show and tell. Would you release your downhaul before you start your reefing process to get the full adjustment after reefing?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kim,
      yes I usually do release the outhaul. It is actually the first thing before releasing the halyard. You can see that on the second reef demonstration at 6:32.

      @@TheBoatRambler Spritsails reef just fine, even better when you don't have a big lug spar up in the air. It's just a pain to actually do it. I tend to go under mizzen and jib instead.

    • @MikStorer
      @MikStorer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MinSredMash Never noticed any problem with small boat spars in the air. Big boats - 20 to 30ft or more .. it can get exciting.
      By the way ... do you have a video demonstrating how to reef a sprit on the water? Particularly one with a laced luff.
      it would be useful for people to see how to do it.

    • @MinSredMash
      @MinSredMash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikStorer I have a heavy 22 foot boat, so yes, it would be quite a big spar.
      We're not particularly good at reefing, so no video, although the sail is laced. It requires slacking the halyard and retying the knot that holds the tack, although the last part is somewhat optional.
