I saw this episode too young and haven’t touched it for years (mainly because I forgot it existed) but I forgot how well they handled Jo. Realising the doctor visited people and not her and was now travelling with a married couple would’ve been two massive hits to her, but she never let it embitter her. She became selfless and remained that way. The doctor’s explanation of ‘I could never find you, you were too busy’ did strike a weird note with me, but you can piece together (no exposition, chinball!) that she had a great life post-doctor even if he did rattle off her achievements. Underrated companion.
8:50 To be fair, this was only a section of the Shansheeth, since at the end of the episode, Mr Smith says that the others called and gave their apologise Not to mention their plan wasn't exactly evil, just reckless, they wanted to save lives, but likely didn't understand the consequences

I’m surprised you haven’t done a more comprehensive Sarah Jane Adventures review series, since it manages to handle mature themes in a better way than Torchwood most of the time without coming across too adult for CBBC. Change, loss, negative relationships, the show’s writing and the performances showed that like Doctor Who just because it was seen as being for kids didn’t mean it talked down to the audience and provided things for older viewers to appreciate. Having storylines be across two twenty-odd minute episodes nicely feels like the Classic Doctor Who, and gives storylines more time to breath than if each storyline was only one episode.
I absolutely LOVE Torchwood (and Jack more than ANY character in all of DW) but the Sarah Jane Adventures is just objectively better. SO well made, especially for a show for kids
I've only seen "Farewell, Sarah Jane" once because it made me cry unctrollably when I watched it. I'm not a crier at all and it kinda spooked me how emotionally effected I was. It was masterfully written and I don't know I want to watch it again just cause of how much I enjoyed it.

I love how they connect the classic series into this. Opens up to young fans that have never seen anyone else as the Doctor and shows that he’s been having Adventures for a very long time. Also shows fans of Sarah Jane her back story in a way

Lovely review. You know RTD had to stick that bit about extending the farewell tour in there, lol. He can get very self-indulgent as times. Beyond that, though, his quiet scenes are always his best. That scene on the planet with the Doctor and Jo was the highlight of the entire two-parter. And I just know Matt was practicing the Third Doctor in the mirror to get it right.
I think the Sarah Jane adventures was excellent, it could have been the forerunner of the first female doctor with an ensemble cast that had so much going on. It is hard to see this and realise what an opportunity has been missed with the current Dr Who incarnation. Great video, I understand what you mean about the difficulty of watching the series again.

I personally don't think that the Doctor going back to see all of his companions that he saw over his 10 incarnations was weird at all. Imo, it makes more sense given from the events and lore from the Time Lord regenerations as well as knowing what's to happen in Time of the Doctor. To the Doctor, this is his last and final regeneration (basically one step closer to actual death) to where his next one (the 11th Doctor) was the incarnation to end it all. After this, there would be no regenerations or attempt to cheat death. So it makes sense that he'd go and see every one of his companions and not just the ones he had as the 10th Doctor cuz as far as he knows, he'll never get the chance to see them or say goodbye again so it was now or never

On the memory weave, it's interesting to noted that they had to be not only straped down with head clamps but almost hypnotised in order to bring the memory of the key to life. Hypnosis has been known to draw out memories that we otherwise would never be able to recall, including details. Add that to the power of the machine being used it makes sense that the way to defeat it was to distract them with their other memories.

Also it's with the companion from that regeneration something special they did being the longest one to date It's only fitting they says goodbye because these companions have been through So many world ending events and Adventures and some of which he even fell in love with It would be wrong for him to not say goodbye it would be in character but wrong and he knows that by now that's something he learned over time Is that when someone asks you to stay for tea sometimes you should
You've opened up a door by reviewing one episode, now you've (hopefully) got to do more. This show was very mature and never treated the kids like idiots, any of the trickster episodes are the best.
There's a serious continuity error in this 2-part episode. Clyde and Rani were confined to Earth by the Judoon at the start of series 3, but Clyde was still able to swap places with The 11th Doctor. How?! Wasn't The Doctor on another planet at the time of the swap?
I would love to see some primeval reviews in the future if that's something you would enjoy doing. But not sure there would be enough room in the top rank for all the eps ;)

Funny you should mention Jim Henson, a Farscape episode called "out of their minds" features aliens that look almost identical to the ones in this SJA episode. Coincidence?
"They don't like to be reminded of their persistent loneliness as friends come and go." I am afraid you have missed a huge point of the Doctor's character. Zoe Herriot. would u do a mini review of "Farewell Sarah Jane" i'd love to hear ur opinion from first viewing til now, they didnt need to make it but was wonderful none the less
The idea that 10 went to every companion before regenerating is a bit silly to me, it would be nice to think that he just occasionally drops in on companions to make sure they're getting on ok.
What I don't understand everyone says the doctor came back only three times it was fourth in the five doctors. I know he didn't exactly comeback for her she was pulled to galifrey but it still counts.
I love the nod to A Charitable Earth ... Dorothy McShane founder and CEO of a world leading charitable organization .... until one day a strange man knocks on her door with a question mark umbrella and she is once again Ace!
School Reunion, Journey's End, Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith. I didn't count Death of the Doctor because she hadn't encountered him again when that scene took place
One of the things I didn't like about this episode is the negative message it accidentally makes. Sarah Jane's first and pretty much only reaction to the Doctor's death is complete denial, which is obviously an unhealthy response to a death. But in the end it turns out she was obviously correct and justified to be in denial. They weren't going to actually kill the doctor off-screen in a spin off show, and I'm not saying they should have. It just unintentionally gives off this strange little message that validates the unhealthy reacition of denial towards the death of a loved one
Ok, when you realize how far advanced Timelord sience is ahead of humanity... like I'm reminded of this fact... You ever see the Doctor make a key? It's like a key is made simply by thought ... So it's not to far that another race could make a key .. especail if it was from a companion .. plus that a Tardis is a huge amount of energy ... And thoughts / ideas or mind energy are massive .. A quoet A Tardis is as expacive as the mind it self...
It would've been more funny, I believe, if the memory weave had worked only for them to get a misshapen lump of metal - the Doctor has changed the locks and keys more than a few times
I know you say boiling children alive is dark for this show but earlier in the series, 2 kids were presumably killed by a slitheen kid so he could wear their skins
@@nickmorrell3559 A new Romana series would've worked much better than the blasphemous nonsense we got for the past few years. Not continuing? Why? Because of the shows cancellation ? YOU MEAN LIZ SLADENS DEATH , yeah that [Death of the MAIN CARACHTER IRL] might have put a Dempner on things , bit insensitive.
First of all it wasn’t actually canceled not the way you make it sound SJA went off the air because the person who was is lead the person who played Sarah Jane died suddenly and for that reason and that reason alone the show ended in fact during corona they actually doing a funeral friend Sarah Jane in which members of Doctor Who in the Seratine chronicles adventures said their goodbyes including her son and Sanjay are now a proper couple and they’re saying their goodbyes together I think they even have a kid if I remember correctly and he can’t guarantee that I do. So don’t say canceled went off the air because it’s lead character died know me actress I should say the character also down because well that’s the web about it and couldn’t have something replacer.
For me this is the weaker doctor story in sja. Mostly because it feels less like SJA like the doctor is the one driving it rather than the actual sja characters. In 10s episode it felt more like the doctor popping and giving the kids a hand whereas this felt like he popped in took over and the kids never got a look in.

I didn't count Death of the Doctor because she hadn't encountered him again when that scene took place
@@HarboWholmes ahhh, makes sense now! Cheers for the clarification :))
No worries!
SJA is the most consistently high quality Whoniverse show and I don’t think it’s close; it’s fantastic!
You name dropped Primeval, now you have to review it, it's the law.... Please ;u;
Yes I do remember this, can't wait to rewach this story.
"I thought I'd dip my toes back into the show *one final time* " i hope ur joking...!!
Can the evil emu’s meet the pakoo’s and be eaten by them
10:20 Wouldn't they have remembered the original TARDIS key as oppose to the modern one?
Yep
One of the things I didn't like about this episode is the negative message it accidentally makes. Sarah Jane's first and pretty much only reaction to the Doctor's death is complete denial, which is obviously an unhealthy response to a death. But in the end it turns out she was obviously correct and justified to be in denial. They weren't going to actually kill the doctor off-screen in a spin off show, and I'm not saying they should have. It just unintentionally gives off this strange little message that validates the unhealthy reacition of denial towards the death of a loved one
i want you to Review class EP 1 at least, because the doctor (capaldi) is there
Ok, when you realize how far advanced Timelord sience is ahead of humanity... like I'm reminded of this fact...
Stop hinting primeval and give us the review already Harbo I will keep asking ( ps love the videos )
I absolutely love Elisabeth sladen. She is so missed
No sympathy for Santiago. He called the Falkland Islands “the Malvinas”. He deserved to be miserable.
I know you say boiling children alive is dark for this show but earlier in the series, 2 kids were presumably killed by a slitheen kid so he could wear their skins
Its loras Tyrell from game of thrones!
when are we getting torchwood children of earth
Review of Primeval when??
He went to see all his companions because the 11th doctor would of been his last life if it wasn't for Clara. Not gonna count the timeless child
I know you find it tough to review SJA so how about to top it like a mini trilogy, you review the first episode Invasion of the Bane?
Thanks for this. I really matters.
Bloody loved this show .mostly because of lis sladen ..makes me more exited that Russell is coming back ..shame Sarah Jane can't ..
I wonder if RTD will revisit the Bannerman Road gang. I have an idea for a continuation series for them, which I've been trying to give to him. WDYT?
@@jamesholmes6506 I have to say I'm not keen on continuing without Sarah ..maybe bring back a new romana .can't think why he never did .
@@jamesholmes6506 apparently. If sja would've carried on he would v.introduce ace .that would've been great
@@nickmorrell3559 A new Romana series would've worked much better than the blasphemous nonsense we got for the past few years.
Not continuing? Why? I was thinking of a series that picks up on her nearest and dearest, where they reunite, move into 13 Bannerman Road, and decide carry on her work after going through rough patches in their lives. Interested and want to hear more?
@@nickmorrell3559 I wasn't keen on the Ace woman, being honest. I've watched a few classic clips on TH-cam and episodes on TV, and she's just not my cup of tea.
Wait sarah from primeval? Fuck yeah
That’s because he’s Peter Pan remember that peter pan for thought about when do too
Because of the shows cancellation ? YOU MEAN LIZ SLADENS DEATH , yeah that [Death of the MAIN CARACHTER IRL] might have put a Dempner on things , bit insensitive.
I thought that it said SJWs killed Doctor Who, and was very interested for a second, still a great video.
In 10s episode it felt more like the doctor popping and giving the kids a hand whereas this felt like he popped in took over and the kids never got a look in.
yes
Iron Fist is canon to Doctor Who
