A Simple Warded Box Lock And Key Made From Scrap Steel

  • My current woodwork project needs a box lock so I decided to make one out of scrap steel. This is a very basic warded lock. It might not be the most secure lock in the world, but it's going to look perfect on my latest build.
The video of the project the lock is made for can be found here.

I love how you often opt for the more labour intensive tools rather than say using a dremel. Genuinely, it looks far more satisfying.

Watching you work is an adventure, wondering, “So, why is he doing that?”, then having that piece seamlessly flow into the final object. As always, your attention to detail is mind blowing. Look forward to seeing what it ends up on.

That's called a WARDED lock. The piece of metal that fit through the slot on the key is called a WARD. They can be as simple as this one, or very complicated and elaborate. You have the ward on the unlock, but not on the lock. Thanks for the video. Jon

I've looked and I don't think there are any other videos on TH-cam about how make these old locks. Well, there's one about how to make an ancient wooden one found in Syria. Yeah, they're not terribly secure, but they are fun to play with and create.
