When you buy a knock off saw, yah you get a knock off saw, I guess. It just makes me appreciate the craftsmanship that Husky put into their product. Saws that run for 20-30yrs cutting and cutting. Especially when someone of your skill and others dial them in to perform with perfection. Cut some trees with my son today, he's 36yrs old. We had a great day cleaning up the trees in his yard. I lost spark in mine after the first fire. It ended up being the spark plug boot, of all things. The first heat cycle on it made it shrink up where it wouldn't let the ignition wire contact the plug any more. Swapped an OEM spark plug boot onto mine, and it ran again.
I made a little puck where you are using a board. All I did was take a piece of 6160 drop off I had that's about 1-1/4" round and trued the end up then center drilled it and then parted it off at about 3/4" long, flipped it then trued up the side I parted off. The live center lines up with the center drill hole and allows the other side to put pressure against the top of the cylinder. One other thing I do is order 6160 over twice the length of what I need for the largest mandrel I will be making then true one end up and center drill it, place the live center then turn it to a couple thou smaller than my bore diameter, flip the piece true up the other end and center drill it then turn it down to a smaller diameter cylinder bore size. Example is 54mm-.002 on one end then 52mm-.002 on the other end. When I install it, to use it, I let the live center help line it up in the chuck to remove run out and using copper pieces for soft jaws I can tighten the chuck on which ever end I need without distorting or damaging it. This allows you to work farther away from the chuck and makes it easier and safer for turning the base. Just a hint that you may or may not like.
@@tinmanssaws Tinman if you go with the Heavy 10 try to find one that has the D1-4 chuck mount, They are hard to find but it will allow you to thread and turn in reverse and it's easy to find a different chuck if you want. I started to buy one but ended up getting a PM1130 because there was so much wear on the South Bend. Yes I wish my lathe had a gear box but it's what I had room for at the time, my next lathe more than likely will be a 17" Kingston.
I have a G660 Farmertec Big Blue and it did something similar. Sometimes it would start, other times you could pull your arm off (doesn't take long on that saw, especially if you don't make sure the decompression is still on for each pull) even if you just stopped to refuel. Anyway, it had 2 problems, one was a shifted diaphragm on the fuel pump side of the carb, the factory assembled it off center and the pins actually punched a 2nd hole. I was able to re-position the diaphragm without replacing it. The 2nd major problem was the sparkplug connector is designed to pierce the plug wire and hit the core and had no securing or guiding method. It wasn't making reliable contact, so you would get a weak spark on account of it jumping 2 gaps (and sometimes not). I stripped it back, wrapped it around the spring connector and soldered it. I then filled the boot with silicone grease and re-assembled. It runs well now except for both tanks leak in storage. Fuel is the cap (FS-91 cap ordered). Oil seems to be leaking even if I store it on it's side, so it's not the cap. Hope maybe your problem is the plug contact. Thanks for sharing, great content!

Machinable wax on the Orac lathe in school (long time ago) was great. Only way to crash it was to run the insert into the chuck, which some people actually did. Also, another great vid, much appreciated. Hyway has two Husky pumps. I just ordered a Hyway pump for my MS660.
I've seen guys crash pipe threader dies bodys into the machine trying to make too short of a nipple , on pipe threader rigig 580 ot 585 something like that itd been awhile
I often make a mandrel from beech or maple, well seasoned,as a snug fit in the bore, and mating with the squish, similar tailstock support to you, this gives me a little more room for tooling.
I have found the farmertec kits can be very good with OEM or good quality aftermarket parts. The farmertec ms 660 kits seem really good. Only problems i have seen are some clutch drums are out of round. The crankshaft big end rod bearing is sometimes not the tightest. The cylinder squish is like .060 or greater. But with a hyway cylinder it seems to make the saw a beast!
I got one of the early g372xp actually right color and all big bored it, potted it, hyway popup and 52mm jug, hadn't used it in close to a year and dropped 2 yesterday that were leaning over my driveway and she started on 3rd pull from sitting forever, never hicjupped 1 time, till it ran out of gas, took a spring loaded 4 inch branch to the bicep now I have 5ceps it basically threw my arm now it looks like i have a big purple scratched extra muscle on my arm, sucker hurts buy saw Is fantastic
Hey tinman. My dad bought a blue g288 and he had the same issue his coil was fine but the igniter went out. Unfortunately he didn't know which one died and ordered the coil first. Oh well he now has a complete oem ignition.
Another $15 dollar coil and it’s off to the race’s! Aftermarket is cheap… for a $100 bucks you can have a couple carburetor’s and coils in your box in case you need to swap one out! 😁👍. That one you corrected should definitely be a darn good work horse for the firewood getter position… or general work horse! Slap a 28” on it and let them cut some wood! 😂👍

Possible just replace the flywheel and key with another aftermarket flywheel if the key slot isn't to bad of shape then reuse and lap I mean lap with valve grinding compound. Then re install the new. Just see who it runs compared to the one tinman put together. Then make your choice on if you want to tuen one up or complete new bottom end and turn it up. Unless the man said i don't care one bit if you pull it apart or not. Then at that point do as you wish! Good luck and love ya brother be safe. these kits are a real temptation, but the shortcomings in fit and finish really add up fast. Your flywheel key shear is probably because the shaft taper and the flywheel are not matching. You could use some shaft repair epoxy to insure a snug fit (with release agent on one part for later disassembly) or lap the buggers in with compound if the fitment error is not too great. I come away feeling like a guy will be chasing component failures until he has pretty much replaced most of the saw with reliable OEM parts.

Hey tinman as a 32 year machinist you did good friend I'm not a saw builder yet but I liked the abs shims I have used black electric tape alot in those cases. I loved the washer on the tailstock live center 👍
My 15 inch carbide steel cutting chop saw sent a chunk of 3x3x.25 block thought the back of the saw busted out the back of the cast aluminum housing and pingpong balled around around the shop today...had just put a brand new 100 dollar blade on it..first cut idk why it done that, scared me to death, was literally like a bullet that's a lb caching gone
Coil failure - just swap coil from your 288 to the silver dogged one, answer in 5 minutes.... Doesnt need to be a permanent swap just to tell you if coil has gone south. Same with flywheel if necessary. I dont like the way that saw stopped, like something got caught up. Regarding the lathe - I prefer making a mandrel to slide the cylinder onto. That way I'm guaranteed the cylinder face is square to the cylinder - I've had a few that weren't square from new, they got corrected...
I just recently stumbled over a box in a friends basement. In it one 038 and another 038 magnum completly disassenbled. so i watched your videos and figured i want to try porting the magnum. you said the recent build was not meant for a long bar. but i want to put a long bar on it if i dont destroy it in the process. would you consider sharing what timing you recoment for that glorious plan of mine?
Hey Tin Man I have a serious question for you. I was on the arborists Forum website, someone wanted to improve their Husqvarna 372 xpw (?), and I had mentioned a highway big bore cylinder head. And of course I get some comments from some ologists, saying that it would cause the saw to run 20% slower and the original cylinder head is better. Now I've watched you and some of other Buckin's friends, and how you guys work on saws. What's got me scratching my head is how can it go 20% slower when I can adjust it to go just as fast as a stock cylinder head? I may not be the smartest guy but here at my job I do very well, (I build airplanes). And even here at my job I get kind of the same flac from the other ologists, and usually I end up fixing their mistakes. I'm very familiar with Machining I'm very familiar with small small measurements/ tolerances. Thinking of getting away from that website unless I'm actually looking for information on saw builds. So basically I can understand if I do a straight swap with no other adjustments comma like putting on a bigger carb and adjusting that carburetor and the throttle to get it to go the same speed as the OEM cylinder head, that it will run 20% slower. Like you, I build from the bearings up, all new gaskets all that type of stuff. And I want my saw to be the most Dependable Workhorse possible, I'm not trying to build some competition race saw.
Hey buddy don’t know if it has been mentioned did u check the trigger was bolted down?? My 281 I built from oem parts in box I ran it out in the bush and she started miss firing and then stopped the bolts came loose on the trigger module up top I screwed it back down and she fired straight up….
@@tinmanssaws oh that sucks mate! I’d probably try an oem trigger if u have a spare and maybe order another FT ignition if u decide that’s what u want to do to continue the FT run ability… I have FT 660 I got that in kit for it was an absolute monster and the 371 kit I wasn’t impressed with
I do, most of my tooling is hand shaped HSS. 3 things, make sure you have a good quality wheel on you grinder. Don't let the tooling get too hot when grinding It (dip it in water as you go). Get a copy of southbends "how to run a lthe" theres drawings in there showing the correct way to grind tooling.

I think you can call the "Farmertec Twins" as "Silver" and "Black Dog". It will make a good A vs B back to back for cylinder heads or pipes.

Tinman why don't you put a dial indicator on your lathe so you don't have to stop and measure where you're at?
I got a free 660 that ate a circlip. Its getting an aftermarket kit

Removing material from the base can't increase your blowdown distance by itself, did you mean blowdown percentage? I'm a newb and it confused me.
