  • Let's have another look at our spare farmertec 288 kitsaw. I've decided to go in a different direction with this build to try and make it better and more long lasting.
    thanks for watching

    Wish u did a brake clean or vac test, and also test the "pop off" of the carb's metering valve. Rule out an air leak. Rule out the tank vent while your at it. Then swap out carbs maybe or at least take a peek inside that carb. A whole sale change means if it works, no real idea why :) Based on the assembly to this point, wouldn't assume a thing, from case screws being tight to seals not square. My bet if you tore it down and build as you do, that saw would have no issues :)

      Good call Walt. I'd love to see it vac tested and the other basics checked, to get it running as is.

    Tinman i hope your back to 100% soon. definitely don't overdo it to quick the body needs time to heal proper. i do also hope u are back in the wood again soon for winder comes in full fledge. we had 64mph gust yesterday here in southwest mi (Kalamazoo county). lots of dead growth and trees down throughout the county. some power outages too but we got power here. also give Mrs Tinman and the new addition to the family my best wishes. Cheers friend 😊😊

    Good stuff tinman, I agree that’s there’s something up with that Chinese carb. My ported OEM 288 runs perfect at 1.25 on H screw, gives a nice four stroke until it is really grabbing some wood.

    Bro I have a 100 dollar saw from ebay that bull dog some crap I did port on it run 32in bar she runs really good been running good for 2 years it was just for fun but it's awsome.

  • @HobbitHomes263
    @HobbitHomes263 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    These CHinese saw makers source parts from different manufacturers for the same part so you get highly variable quality and metalurgy/casting. I bought a G660 for a log home build using massive logs so I needed something that would run a 32 inch bar. It was always hard to start but the real issue is the way it eats parts. the oiler quit, the chain tension adjuster was junk. the clutch bearing failed. Then a carb rebuild, now it wants new crank seals. I'm just sick of working on it. WHen it runs it cuts great but every time I pick it up it's a different saw.

    • @rileyjohnston8393
      @rileyjohnston8393 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big problem with this stuff too is that even if the shape of a part is exactly the same as OEM, like you said a lot of the time the material quality of the Chinese parts is garbage.

    • @HobbitHomes263
      @HobbitHomes263 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rileyjohnston8393 exactly. a CHinese cylinder may look the same but cheap alloys move around differently when they are cold or hot or running hard

    • @HobbitHomes263
      @HobbitHomes263 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also meant to add that you can get two of the same model as Tinman has and they act like completely different machines

    • @HobbitHomes263
      @HobbitHomes263 ปีที่แล้ว

      another notion of mine is the alignment of the crank-halves after the journal is pressed into place. It doesn't take much more than a few thousandths to make a saw run weird. The induced wobble isn't enough to blow the thing up but they eat bearings and seals and can be inconsistent in how they pull in the air/fuel mix. Never checked a saw for misalignement but I've seen privateer mMX guys blow up expensive dirtbike engines because they didn't get crank alignment right

    • @HobbitHomes263
      @HobbitHomes263 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, the nice thing about these Junks is that they are so cheap you just don't feel too bad about dropping one in a dumpster.

    Yea covid sucks the first time, the 2nd week was worse for me but I kept moving after laying around and I felt better when I got up and moved but definitely was tired 😫 . I look forward to learning more and more I bought a rebuilt 120 of Amazon a few years ago and could never get it running properly and messed with the jets and made it worse and haven't been able to get it running again. I have a 545xp that I totally love and a 460 rancher. I'm saving up for a 592xp to use for the big logs I've acquired for my new firewood business. But I'd like to learn how to work on them as well!

    I was on day 5 in the woods cutting firewood when I got the call saying I was positive. They acted like I should been in ground. I was a little light winded but definitely a lot better from the couple days before. It was 35f and windy. I needed wood bad. If not I’d been sipping fireball and watching tv

    Tinman- I’ve been struggling with a basket case 272xp that wouldn’t tune, idle, hard to start… I tried a different carb, re-checked for air leaks ect. The saw had a new aftermarket coil on it that I gaped with a business card as I always do.The saw sat under the bench for the last year and I pulled it out and re-set the coil gap to .005”, and it ran like a brand new saw. Cut 3 loads of wood with it. Starts good too! I was thinking fuel/air issue, but🤷‍♂️

    How about testing some of the parts from this bad 288 on your good 288. I'm thinking ignition and carb as a start. Best way to identify and filter out the bad parts and its quick. A little disruptive for the good 288 maybe but when you're done go back to original parts on the good 288.

  • @beepjeep2004
    @beepjeep2004 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just a suggestion. Id look into a thick RC car pit mat (proline or proteck) for your workbench. It dampens the saw vibrations so tools aren’t falling off your bench and it makes it easier to find the tuning screws while it’s running.

    • @wrstew1272
      @wrstew1272 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or a mud flap, old door mat, etc

    • @beepjeep2004
      @beepjeep2004 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those work too. I’ve tried hard toolbox liners they don’t work as well. My protek pit mat is like a silicone/foam material. Almost feels like a tougher memory foam the saw just kinda sinks into a spot and stays.

  • @Bigcheif360
    @Bigcheif360 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a suggestion. It’s a pain having everything on a bench vibrating away. Maybe you should get a piece of high density foam for under a saw when you run them. Maybey a double layer of workout mat about 16” square. That way the vibration is dampened and your excess oil is contained.

I'm strongly considering doing a base gasket delete and a modded muffler too. As far as the gasket delete goes; what do you use for sealant and how much should I apply?

    Before you tear it down, change carb. Just to find out if that is the main issue. Easy, you have a tested oem. Then make a professional saw with known better quality essential parts. A side comment- I have flown Radio Control airplanes for 21 years now, and was a aircraft mechanic for a living. When the orientals cloned German and American RC engines, some put Walbro carburetors on them, some cloned the carbs. The needles on the clones were a much finer pitch, thus definitely changing the known start settings. One that ended up being a real value buy had major carb issues for almost a year with people really upset about it. Finally found out that the sealant used in securing the main jet body had too much used, thus blocking fuel flow, yadda yadda. Tiny bit of excess sealant in the initial run(s) caused tons of research ( by the consumers) to correct. So……..humor both me and the guy who donated the research unit- seems like he would be impressed to find out what the “ bug “ was, and all of your viewers that will have the knowledge provided by the “test”. You will be glad that you did the ten minute trial. Covid sucks! Still don’t know what is capable of, and pushing 71 with long term COPD and other respiratory issues I have been doing the hermit thing since it first started. Wanna build stuff for a long time, and people make less sense than motors- lots of that to catch up with.

    sadly the chinese made stuff is just built to the specs they have in mind.
    I have a couple chinese TAP n Die sets - both are different from the other :o
    I have a Japan set I use as it is the same as my USA made set - true to size/dimensions.
    Ive had FT saws and NT saw. [yeah nt is a little nicer fit & finish, BUT] both were varied on their sizes. in the saw and the carbs, they are close, but. . .
    when you buy a chinese clone [my opinion here] it is a gamble. either you get a good one that you love to run.
    or you get a box of goods that, night be "ok" or it just fails.
    it is a gamble. You could win, you could win BIG or you can loose :( .
    its what is important to you.
    A chinese saw is a great learning tool. and if you want to learn? or if you want to be working on it - they are just what you needed.
    If you want to pick it up and use it to cut consistently? them you need something built that is reliable. [not a clone]
    Your going to build that one into a good reliable saw. So YES replace what parts are not quite right with parts you know are made right!
    that will be a good tool after you have built it with quality parts and added your magical touch to finish it.
    whoever gets that saw will have a great tool? :)

    have followed the series with interest but in this video you are departing from the original idea of creating a 90cc saw from a kit. Most people do not have old 88's lying around to rob for parts or use to hybridize with the kit from China. To me it is important to see this through solely relying on the Farmer tec kit, otherwise a buyer of the kit is just playing a crap shoot....some kits maybe good, others not worth a damn and when you get a lousy kit ya really need to have a path to fixing what is broke without reliance on vintage or high end after market 288 parts
