- "As Tears Go By" by Marianne Faithfull
Composers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Andrew Loog Oldham
Lyrics:
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see, but not for me
I sit and watch as tears go by
My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch as tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doing things I used to do, they think are new
I sit and watch as tears go by

As Tears Go By was one of the first English songs I heard and long remembered since 1967 and is 56 years ago. I am now 72. Thank you Marianne❤
One of the best songs Jagger and Richards penned!
And this is the best version, by a country mile!....❤️
She wrote the lyrics, they wrote the music.
@@TeddyLeppard Don't believe so Teddy, Mick and Keith all the way. As I understand it, it's the first song they ever wrote....
As I rapidly approach 70 years old, this song has a more profound meaning to me.
Same goes for me. I'm 77 approaching 21.
Just turned 67 and my parents had a pub in the years 60-79, where the jukebox played all those wonderful music records. At that time I almost did not understand a single word of english. The old man thought school was a vaste of time and not real work.
@@bionsjazznblues Even at ten years younger, I know how that feels!
I am 77 years and feel the same!
As my Uncles always told me "Middle Age is 15 years older than you, so you never reach it!" Still true after 60+ years, something to look forward to. @@bionsjazznblues

I’m 74 and I will share this beautiful song with my 3 granddaughters, all in their early teens, to experience the music I loved and grew up listening to.
It's beautiful for my grandchildren and great creat children too
Well done---keep on keeping on.
I grew up with Marianne, all the boys loved her, and still do. Her voice and songs are the romantic bedrock of all us aging children ❤.
Being born in 1960 this was the music I listened to growing up. My mom always had the radio on around the house or in the car. Cherished memories!
thats great
My mum loved this. 😢
@@tallsoldier In my 60s and never knew that, thank you.
Hear that she caught tied up with a British man of Indian origin in the early 1970s but it did not work. Reports confirmed she was scared off by her supposed lover.
The Sixties gave us Jagger and Richards, Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, so many wonderful song-writers,
Jim Croce also
Peter Townsend too
Holland-Dozier- Holland and let us not forget BRIAN WILSON and Mike Love
To hear Marianne perform this at age 17, 41 & 72 is absolutely brilliant . A life on record .
Good for you, Eric.
Sooooo cool ❤
That's a bucket for me to see her perform on 3 separate occasions.
I loved Marianne's version of this song when it came out in the 1960's & still love it to this day. x
Iam 60 (1962) and this is one of my favourites from that era😊🇬🇧👍
The lyrics are such thought provoking poetry. The music transcendent. Her voice is beautiful, haunting and brings it all to life. I'm a man in my late 50's with a train wreck of a life in some ways and I'm tearful listening to this. I wish I could go back to the happiness, safety and innocence of my childhood and start again. No worries or stress, just enjoying playing with my friends. Such good times. Now..... I sit and watch as tears go by........
God bless you mate. I know how you feel. I wish I could go back and put things right.

One of my favorite songs of all time .... It still gives me a lump in my throat, especially now that I am old.

This song has matured with age. A classic Stones song and one of their best. Beautifully sung by Marianne.
Sadness has its own beauty
Mid 60s. What an splendid era in pop history. While male pop bands such as Beatles, Rolling Stones etc were dominating the music scene, Ms Faithfull along withh a bevy of British female singers were hitting the 'top of the pops' with their gorgeous voices n styles. Remember Petula Clark, Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Anita Harris? Not forgetting supermodel Twiggy influencing teenage girls with mini skirts n mod fashion all over the world. What a terrific time for youths including me in SEAsia. I raise a glass of good cheer to Marianne Faithfull.
@jonathanbirch2022 Lesley Gore. I love "You don't own me."
My sentiments exactly.
This is forever Marianne Faithfull's song.
I slightly disagree as I believe that Marianne would consider *"our"* song
Hello 👋🏼 Carolinetalley
Stones
Keith and Mick gave this song to Marriane. And She made it hers. However, I do like Micks version as well. I don't believe Mick set out to out do Marrianes version . This is just a well written song by the geniuses of that generation. The so-called hits of this generation are vulgar and unoriginal. Spit in my mouth .
This beautiful classic brings back memories of many decades ago , i was 21 years old when this romantic song was out , i still get pleasure of hearing it again im now 76 years old ,,, Time waits for no one ,,,,lol Jane xx
romantic song? you miss the whole meaning
@@joelapaire i have missed nothing thank ypu
what the hell are you on about ???
It was a very sad song. A woman growing older was either unable to have children or hadn't found a partner with which to have children. She has money and a privileged life but is denied some things that even the very poor can take for granted. Although sweetly sung it is a lament. Something akin to "Tar and Cement".
Beautifully lyrical. Mick and Keith gave it to her and it was huge hit for her.
This was my nans funeral song, she would sing it to me every night to send me sleep. This has brought back many memories

Such a beautiful song. I think this was one of the first songs Jagger and Richards wrote together. Marianne is the real thing.
Bought the 45 when it came out. Still have that London label record 57 years later.
I love the video. I am 65. Bring a lot old memories, very sad. A lot friends and family members gone forever, only in pictures and memories.

It's 2024 and I've been listening to this tune for decades never getting tired.

This was the masterpiece of the Rolling Stones'. Sung so well by Marianne Faithful. One of the vert best of all time.
She recorded it 1st.
Yes her boyfriend mick jagger gave it to her after he and keith Richards wrote it
@@MarlaHeller Jagger and Richards wrote it after getting locked in a kitchen It was one of the first possibly the first song they wrote and where embarrassed by it because it wasn’t blues. So they gave it to her
Mick & Kieth thought it was too cheesy

Her sister Jean was the top model back then..I was 9 or 10 then her face was everywhere ...both her and Marianne intrigued me. Sadly Marianne tried to kill herself right after Brian died in 69 and they left for Australia ...he of course would have his 1st child karis with Marsha Hunt, whom he denied her for 12 years meanwhile getting Bianca pregnant with jade then marrying her.. we all know what happened after that...Jerry hall who is my age, sunk her hooks in him and broke up his only legal marriage...the rest is history...just some little tidbits of a stones fan since the 1960s!

Hello 👋🏼 Kathleen Kelley
Good for you, Kathleen.
This is great
I've seen her in concert a few times. She was funny, incredibly charming, and her smile lit up the stage.
You need to see the Rolling Stones too
I wish I could have been sitting quietly in a corner of the recording studio where this jewel was recorded. Love and cheer to you, Marianne.
THIS is what is CLASSIC MUSIC, makes you FEEL, THINK, HEAR, BREATHE, CRY, LIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marianne at that time had perfect diction in her singing voice, meaning you could easily hear every single word of these simple but powerful lyrics. Sandie Shaw had the same ability to make us remember both the singer and the song. It's generally lacking now because more and more artists try to manipulate their own voice to create a style. As always, simple is genius.
Beautiful the song and the lady too. She was very underrated back in the 60's, the very best musical era of all time. I look at the then Marrian Faithful and see pure devine gorgeousness!!! There I have said it.
Possibly the most beautiful song EVER recorded.
I was born in Finland in1949 and bought my first guitar in 1966 and soon also learned my first accords. Marianne Faithful´s song was one of the melodies I started to play along and sing.
Oh boy how emotional I became when listening to this beautiful melody!
Later in 80´s I even lived 4 years in London but unfortunately never met madame Faithful at any concert nor anywhere else..
I still would like to meet her because her music has affected me very much.
At least through this message I want to send my best and dearest greetings to Marianne Faithful! Thankyou for your music!

Does she have a Welsh background?
@@utubegeronimo7628: She was born in Hampstead, London. England. Her father Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, was a British intelligence officer and professor at London University
Faithfull's mother Eva had been born in Budapest and moved to Vienna in 1918. Faithfull's maternal grandfather had aristocratic roots in the Habsburg Dynasty, while Faithfull's maternal grandmother was Jewish. In regard to her roots in the Austrian nobility, Faithfull discovered on the British television series Who Do You Think You Are? that the title used by family members was Ritter von Sacher-Masoch, the corresponding English title being that of Baronetess, a concept like an inherited knighthood.
