That's a good way to put it. They're each others equals and best at what they do. But I overall prefer the sound and style of Lombardo compared to Hoglan. Just more organic and natural sounding. But other people prefer the "atomic clock" sound of Hoglan. All about preference.

Gene hoglan is a legend as we all know , but Dave Lombardo fits this band so much more , there's something about his use of timing and how his beats have a different flow and groove to any other metal drummer , gene is perfect for death/ extreme metal, but Dave is thrash , the fact that he never uses a click track when playing live or in the studio( for the most part) gives the music so much life ,it's hard to put it in to words , I can play most slayer songs that Dave recorded , and even if I get it beat for beat hit for hit perfect I still don't sound like Dave, I've played along to his beats since 1989 , his last two albums with slayer were brilliant , and his stuff on the suicidal tendencies album was so energising , one of the best metal drummers of all time ( even Charle benannte said when drummers first heard raining blood they all had to step up a notch , that says it all.
The Big 4 is watered down soccermom thrash metal, with the exception of Slayer. Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax are the least aggressive bands in thrash. That's why they are the most commercially successful. Hence where the "Big 4" shit comes from, magazine writers. That's where you marks don't get it. It's all about album sales, not how good you are.
Lol that’d be the perfect way, to miss out, on some really great thrash. Cause Testament’s one of the few bands that’s been going over 30 plus years, who’s still putting out relevant albums. Too many too list after Practice What You Preach but start with Souls Of Black on up to Titans Of Creation. Their only so so albums are The Ritual and maybe Demonic and they’re still pretty good.
They've done that over the years, keep the set old school. When The Gathering is your best album that sort of sucks to be honest. Their first two albums are classics but nothing original. There were 100 thrash bands that had that sound at the time. In the 90's with Low, The Gathering, and fuck it Demonic they found their identity. They weren't just another one-dimensional thrash band.
The switch from Gene Hoglan to Dave Lombardo is like trading gold for gold, both excellent thrash drummers.
Did not like Hoglans drum triggers. Sounded awful when I saw them in 2018. Might as well just played an electronic drum kit.
