Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙏🏼
Doing a lot of the same thing around here. The 125 with the snow thrower has been the tool of choice for me. Ken
We've never had a consistent amount of snow enough to justify a snowblower attachment, but if this keeps up we may have to adjust course.
I was wondering about the presence of the rear blade
Figured I'd try it out, it would be good by itself, but in tandem with the front plow, it's less helpful, since the lift mechanism for the front and rear is the same.
thank you for doing this video! I'm in process of restoring a cub cadet 1641 with a similar (identical?) vanguard engine and I'm now adjusting the valves. On the other side of the engine, are the exhaust and intake values in the same order as on the side in the video? (exhaust / intake)? Or reversed?
Exhaust will be the valve nearest the muffler/exhaust. Intake is the one closer to the carburetor/intake.
@@SolunaGarage that's all I needed - thanks!
No worries, good luck and check back in, let us know how it went.
@ she runs perfectly! Thanks again. Can’t compare these older machines to any of the crap that’s made today.
Awesome. Glad to hear of another one being saved. They really are fantastic little tractors.
You can be sure there is certainly this guy who watches all your videos. Where us could I learn so much. Thank you again for the efforts. You are a great teacher. Ken
Ken, we appreciate you sticking around and we are sorry that we haven't had any full length, edited videos for a while. Glad you are still finding value in the short, unedited ones.
This is very similar to an outboard motor F-N-R shift assembly. Except that in this case you don't get the slippage of water to help act as a clutch. Stopping makes perfect sense. People can break anything.
have 93 gx2000 snapper gt180h484k needing drive shaft bearing removing
What is it that you need?
That was a lot of runout.
Yeah, it was. I assume it's always been like that, from the wear I see on the adjustment plug and original bearing races.
So you're using the old cage but using the new ball-bearing?
For this one, yeah. It operates better that way. Ideally, you would replace both but with the runout this shaft had, I had to go with what made it happy.
Ok brain pick time!! So I have a 3000 series. Not sure of year. Everything works as it should however when I push the petal to move it jerks vary harsh. I did find I had a leak come from the rear end and the hydro oil was milky bad. If I change the hydro fluid and filter and fix the leak will that fix the problem of it jerking badly or is something else making it jerk hard when moving?
You may have an internal issue with the differential. I would start by changing fluid and filter, then take it from there.
Try the NICE 605 mod.
I believe it only works for the older two turn boxes. Newer boxes have the pivot point of the plate fastened separately with a shoulder bolt.
@@SolunaGarage gotcha,....never messed with the 3 turn late stuff.
Are you going to show the assembly process and adjustment on this for best results?
Absolutely. Not the next video, but the one following.
Wondering how much you paid man? Am thinking of maybe buying a 64 I have seen for sale here in the UK. Have you done any video updates? No doubt I will find out as I have just subscribed. 👍
Hey, we unfortunately had to let go of the truck but found it a great new owner who has done a lot of work to it and drives it regularly.
@ The one I am potentially looking at has a wood bed, and not that good a one, so I am guessing the steel bed was rotten and been cut out. I see you did update videos on the 64 so will watch. Thanks for posting man. 👍
Good luck with your purchase! These are truly unique old trucks, but not meant for someone who is tall...I'm 6'3" and did not fit comfortably in that 64. Cab designs improved for the bumpside and dentside trucks.
@ I am about 5’9 so no worries. The guy selling has had it 12 years, which is good, but you also think why you getting rid of now? I must admit I get rid when something is coming up that’s a bank breaker. But maybe he just wants a change 🤔🤷♂️ It’s a 300ci in line six, which probably most were.
Thank you! Your post was a life saver!
Glad it helped!
I have been putting off replacing the intake gaskets for 3 years now because they are leaking, i just been keeping the oil topped off, but after watching this im going to tackle it tomorrow LOL
Not a big deal, really. Good luck!
Running sweet!
Yeah the old battery ignition, no oil filter twin just hums!
I've recently found your channel and I find it super cool and admirable seeing a couple with a love and passion for something that's stereotypically a "mans" hobby.
Thank you, we appreciate you taking the time to comment. Making this hobby more accessible to everyone is very important to us.
Nice! Great machine!😊
Thanks Otis! How's the 2166 doing?
@SolunaGarage Great! Sometimes it kills the engine when engaging the PTO, and a backfire out the exhaust when turning off. I rev it up then key off at idle quickly!
I noticed the single cylinder Commands like to really be warmed up before engaging the PTO. My 2166 is exactly the same way. As for the backfire, a good 60 seconds of cool down at idle and then the throttle up before shutting off has always worked for me. It does need to be a full 60 seconds or more though. The muffler design on the 2000 Series is extremely susceptible to the backfire due to raw fuel self-igniting in the chamber.
Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to the small tractor world. You 2 are a treasure to folks like me out here. As a 40 year veteran of the bad back team I truly feel your pain. There is really nothing like it. Hang in there. I will certainly try to support you where I can. Ken
Thanks so much, Ken. All we can do is put one foot in front of the other, take it a day at a time, and do our best to make a positive change in the world.
Sounds great!
Thanks Mitch! Not happy about the valvetrain noise, but we will run it for a while under a load and see how it does.

We would love to see the photos! Send them to justin@solunagarage.com
I'm not much of a Cub Cadet guy but this is awesome I love how everything runs and has a good outcome. I love bringing home dead machines and bringing them back to life. I'm more of a John Deere 300 series guy my 78 316K I saved and is my mowing machine but I've got a Kabota Diesel garden tractor, a Case 222 garden tractor I repowered and use as my snowplow and work horse machine. I enjoy your videos!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. All three of the machines you noted that you own are fantastic tractors that we will never see the like of produced again. I'd really like to own a Case some day.
@SolunaGarage I agree the older machines are better and actually have a soal to them. These newer units being made aren't ment to last more then 10 years. The 316K I have I paid $400 a year ago non running less then 3 hours had it running and it's never stopped since yeah it uses a bit of oil but I'm keeping this machine for a long time. The Case was actually my first ever build. It started as a scrapped out unit. Needed a engine I put a 13hp Predator 420cc Hemi in it and use it as much as I can yeah its the roughest looking one I've got but I love it. The kabota is 2000s model but I paid $150 for it with a few minor things wrong I just loved the idea of the 3 cylinder diesel in a mower with power steering. It runs super smooth and I might end up sticking the engine into a 300s series JD to build by dream machine if I don't sell it.
@iowafox2206 that Kubota diesel is a tried and true workhorse. The 2182 we have has the gas version of that engine and they are ridiculously smooth and refined.
What size ball hone did you use?
83mm/3.267
Thanks for the video. I know that this video is 4 years old, but thought maybye you may see it sometime. Here is my question, how do the front wheels steer when there is no hydraulic pressure , and no mechanical linkage. I have a 1872 and i can turn wheels also when its not running with no mechanical linkage . I mean where does the pressure come from to turn wheels ? NOTE-- I do have to lift front off the floor to be able to steer wheels. Thanks
Good question. The hydraulic control valve for the steering is an orbital valve. It will create some flow, with virtually no pressure when you rotate the valve via turning the steering wheel. This will transfer whatever fluid is in the lines and valve out to the cylinder. As you noted, it is very weak without any input flow/pressure from the pump.
@@SolunaGarage T
Ive noticed some command 18 engines have the fuel pump built into the valve cover and some dont. Does it just depend on the model of mower theyre on?
Yeah, it depends on the spec number of the engine, and what the machine manufacturer requested from Kohler. Some have the valve cover pump, others have a crankcase pulse pump, others have no fuel pump at all.
@SolunaGarage ok I was wondering about that. My 1864 has a hose running from the motor behind the oil filter that runs the pump.
That's the pulse pump style. Arguably a better design than the valve cover mechanical version.
So how did you make it a 20 HP from an 18? Is it tuning or rpm or...?
There is a throttle limiter on the 18hp. If you remove the limiter and readjust the governor, you have a 20 HP.
Nice! You are amazing!😊
Thanks Otis 🙏🏼
Every start is a cold start this time of year.
Yeah, it's getting to be that time again. Batteries and electrical systems are gonna start complaining.
Love the Command series engines, do you ever see an issue with the oil pump drive gears stripping out over time?
I've not seen that myself but I have heard of it, along with the crank gear cracking and the governor gear breaking. All of these were high hour or even on second rebuild concerns.
Well, mine was having over revving issues. I adjusted the governor, then I came to this video and saw you inspect the governor gear. When I look down my oil fill hole the governor gear is gone. Give me a rundown on what I’m in for, engine rebuild?
Yup, plan on going into the crankcase, and you should plan on replacing rods, pistons, rings, and at least hone the bores. You'll have an engine that will last your lifetime.
@@SolunaGarage do you have any videos of rebuilding this engine?
We do not have a full teardown and rebuild but that is in the works. This series goes over everything except the opening up the crankcase and replacing components inside.
How would you fill it with the trans installed in the mower?
Remove battery tray and transmission fan/pulley.
mine is measuring 75psi on compression is that acceptable ? just trying to eliminate things to try and stop it backfiring and generally running like a pig lol (and yes carb has been cleaned ) !
That's not great, but it will run on 75. I would check your valve lash and ignition components next. Backfiring is usually carb or ignition related, and if you have a bad condenser it will cause it to run really awfully under anything other than idle.
@@SolunaGarage many thanks , have just found ur channel its great 👍👍
@hookybit hope it helps!
@@SolunaGarage dont suppose you have a part # for the condensor ?
Points and Condensor: 52-755-13-S
Is the oil you add back in 5w50 full synthetic ?
Yes, it is.
I think i have a good question for you. I have a dixon zeroturn with a cv16 high output. Sticker says its a cv15 tho. Anyways. Its always been a bit of a hard start but always started. Recently i was running it and it died. Had spark, and fuel. No compression. I did a head gasket, also had to use some timeserts. First start it kept flooding. Had to remove spark plug to clear cylinder two times. Third time i discontinued the fuel line and i got it to start. Connected fuel line and it was good, mowed the yard. It would start back up hot with choke on . Next day i go to start it up and nothing. Some poping but flooded before it could amount to any speed to get going. Same as first startup. I asumed it was the spark advance module. I did go for the cheapo 30 dollar ignition control module. Do you think my problem is its not the kohler version? Or do you know of something else that would cause this? I did clean lifters during rebuild so valves wouldnt stay open also checked flywheel key. Is good. Should i just get the kohler brand? Thanks in advance ç
Sounds like you have overfueling, not ignition problems. Have you checked spark when the engine is failing to start/flooding? That's what I would check first.
Hello, just a quick question..would you use this on the 2166 16 hp ? Would it fit? Thanks
Yep, we actually have a 2166 with this installed on it. 👌🏼👌🏼
That's a good deal. Lots of small engine repair videos on your channel and I guess you know a lot knowlege about small engine repair. Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies parts for small engines and maybe we would work together to help more people in the community.

Nice! Will keep that mod in mind 🦾
I just finished a 50A deck. It mows better than the Haban 60 unless you install the rock guard back then they clump badly.
Yeah, I really like the 50A/C decks. They are the best old decks Cub made. They cut great and are super easy to repair and maintain.
I have a 1440 that blows fuses, replaced ignition and solenoid. Still blows on first position on ignition. Any ideas?
First position on the switch is RUN/LIGHTS. I suspect you have a short to ground on the positive wires going to the front or rear lights. I'd start there.
@@SolunaGarage Thank you. Greatly appreciated
That mows nicely!😊
For an old 44a it does great!
The quiet line were great machines, I had one, then got hooked on the 82 series major improvement. Only use now for snow removal 450 blower with an IH cab. Mow my own lawn with a walker MDD not even in the same category but I evolved over the years
The IH/CCC Cub line just kept getting better until they retired them. The 82 Series were a huge improvement over the Quietline, and the Cyclops again were an improvement over the 82 Series. All we can do now is save them and appreciate them for what they were and still are.
I have a complete 1720 With a very strong k18 $300.
So if you went to Home Depot and bought a new Cub Cadet, do you think that it would still be mowing 50 years from now? Like your 70's 1250 is? They are wonderful machines. I mow weekly with my 1978 1450. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching! These truly are some amazing machines.
Very cool video I am a cub cadet garden tractor fan. I do not see many of these mowing any more mainly without deck and hooked up to a plow.
@kylebruhn thanks, we love these old vintage Cubs. It's a differing feeling mowing with something that is 50 years old.
@@SolunaGarage I have a 1450, 982 and a Loboy 154 and absolutely love them! Trying to buy a 1650 and a 782D right now.
My Cyclops loves to corrode the grounds as well. Easy to tell when it needs grounds cleaned. You turn the key off and the tractor just keeps running. As always thanks for the videos. Good stuff. Ken
Hey Ken - we are going to return to our full length videos soon. We have an update video coming this week. Thanks for sticking around!
Always fun to join you.
Thanks for sticking it out with us. We are working on our return to the full length videos this week 🙏🏼
If one wanted to look for a classic garden tractor to restore, what would you suggest. We don't have a lot of Cub Cadet. I am leaning towards a Wheel Horse or Troy Built tractor.
Wheel Horse or Gravely or Deere. Deere 300 Series would be an obvious choice. Wheel Horse 420-H would be a nice hydro tractor and more unique. Gravely G Series would be great if you want a gear drive.
@@SolunaGarage Thanks for you reccomendation
They are all great machines. I think what I would do is drive one of each and see what fits you best.
