Great review Peter. Trumpeter really do have the worlds best packaging eh?? It's also nice to see they are giving us some bulkheads for the hull and moulding in halves to accurately produce the bow. Much better than the Titanic. May I suggest you look at the Tamiya instructions for a painting guide and also consider LP paints as they have a few specific Japanese Navy colours. Just noticed.. it doesnt say "Yamato" anywhere?? Must be a licensing thing, or Chinese laws about what you can and can't write on your packaging??
I noticed that too, no Yamato on the box. Here is the US the box is a little different. Here the box clearly says Yamato over a big Japanese flag and the manufacturer is Gallery Models and MRC. Same art work and as far as I can tell and the kit is exactly the same. Jeff

Hi Peter, I would recommend Tamiya LP8 for the lower hull and LP12 Kure Arsenal for your hull/superstructure. The deck could be painted LP16 Deck Tan and the Linoleum could be painted with LP17. The reason I recommend LP paints is you dont have to use a Primer, they are Tamiyas latest colour matched colours and they are tough when dry.

Hi Peter, yup me again , I just got an answer back from Metro Hobbies I reached out to them about up date sets for the Yamato , apparently they are coming in around 4 weeks after release this includes the deck & metal gun barrels plus associated parts & sets , so far the info is still pretty sketchy but it is coming on that point they are clear, hoping all is well & keep up the good work
Iowa Class had a beam of 108 feet as the Panama Canal was 110 feet wide. It limited the guns to 16". It would have been very unstable when firing a broadside. If the guns were bigger. The Yamato's guns were 18" thus requiring a wider beam for stability when firing a broadside. This is a great kit. Enjoy the build.

When get around to it Peter it will be good to see it brought to life , i do prefer 1/700 but a ship in any scale is always fun to watch , cheers marra . Regards Gav.
I had the old 1970’s Nichimo version of the Yamato but eBay’ed it a couple of years ago. It absolutely pales in comparison to this. The same old question from my wife: “Where would you put it if you had it??”
Howdy. Was going to recommend Model Monkey for 3d "bits" but he only seems to have IJN ventilators. Panama Can lock (original ones) were 900 x 110 x 40 feet, so, US ships held to WL dimensions of ±880 x 108 x 35 as a maximum. And, while larger than your tub, that kit would fit on your sofa :-) You'll need about a pint of Kure gray and Hull Red for this beastie. You will have the exciting bit of having a large number of superstructure decks which were covered in russet-red-brown linoleum, which will make for some evil masking. Neat Yamato triva: There was an elevator in the central command tower. Much of the ship had air conditioning to combat hot Pacific weather. Before the last battle, the decks were "painted" with ash and turpentine to darken them (many arguments on what color that was) IJN fielded an "canister" anti-aircraft shell for the 18" guns, but those were never actually used.
Thanks for your comment and info, hmm on the couch eh yep it will fit there lol. That elevator would be better than all those stairs. I am hoping someone will bring out a wooden deck.. Cheers mate 😉👍
Question for you , have you seen the Yamato Memorial where they have a 1/10th scale model of the ship so big you need a cut lunch just to see all of it .
Hi,is there a detailed diagram were to put the telegraph communication wire,,I cannot get my head round the fact that the Japanese sacrificed such a beautiful battleship with absolutely no aircraft carriers snd destroyers etc, basically it did not matter how powerful this ship was it had no chance at all without support.
Hi Peter , the special glue from Metro Hobbies has just rolled up for the wooden deck it is called Super Phatic Glue description goes Ultra thin foam safe, odourless , penetrating, Bonds: wood, foam, plastic ,& carbon fibre, GRP the company's name is Deluxe Materials, they sent me 3 containers, suppose to resist our heat we will see when the summer comes .
Peter that's the problem with it , the adhesive they use doesn't hold up sticky at first but after 12 months no real adhesive left & with the Aussie summer the adhesive gives up , now I have 2 choices one is the deck from Pontos when it comes or paint it the way Nigel suggested in his video I'm not sure yet .
Great out of box review looks like a real nice kit...I would say the size is impressive but I have built the 1/200 Yamato before....just the old Nichimo kit and that was a difficult build....would I buy this.....no.....but if this company does the Battleship Fuso or my all time favourite ship the IJN Akagi in 1/200 I'm in hook..line and sinker!!!!
I had this pre-oredered from hobbylink japan as soon as it was announced but sadly had to cancel it due to the cost and the almost 200 USD shipping at a bad time due to having just been let go from my job so money is now real tight until I can find a new one
@@OzScalemodeling Too big and expensive for me anyway mate. I do have the Tamiya Premium 1/350 Yamato kit in my stash, with extra PE sets for it etc. Will be building that soon. Will be great to watch you build this monster though. Looking forward to that.
yeah ah about that Adam from Metro Hobbies has put me onto a new adhesive for that very thing I stressed that our high temperatures the normal stuff is not cutting it when I get it would you like to be contacted over it ?.
Hi Peter Good unboxing she has plenty to keep one occupied. But just a word of warning make sure you have some reference material as you are building 13 small boats and 4planes and there is no where in the instructions they tell you to fit them. Cheers Denn8s
Is the kit capable of being converted to RC?..........I know Tamiya and Lindberg offers RC conversions kits for some of their ship models. Does this company do the same?
Hi Peter , yep that time again , deck "ZE" main super structure the 6 lower hatches are upside down it's even listed on page 39 of the instructions , tell me who puts a view port at the bottom of the hatch self defeating I would think, to all modellers doing this kit keep your eyes open , & enjoy till the next problem .
I watched a very well made movie about a Japanese mathematical genius that was working to get the Yamato canceled in favor for carriers. It was on Tubi. Well worth the watch it is called The Great War of Archimedes.

Lets see how good this kit turrets compare to fujimi 1/200 collection sets..so far we know the fujimi is top notch and is a good upgrade for the old 1/200 nichimo kit.
If they come out with an "as commissioned" version I will jump all over it. I am converting an old 1/200 scale to "as commissioned" and adding hull plating. What a challenge.
Hi Peter , have you tried dry fitting the stern of the Yamato yet ?, a rude surprise you get 22 cm of plastic you can't use & falls 7 cm short of mid ships I have no idea why this was done , when you try it you should see what I mean unfortunately we did pay for it , question at this time is do I cut it out or leave it given my Fujimi turrets do go that deep, let me know what you think ..thanks
Wot huge kit way beyond my attention span & where do u put it maybe add on a new room lol !!? Plastic moels are reaching a whole new era good luck with that
The hull appears to need a lot of work, not sure what all the lumps are on the bulbous bow are but they need removing, when you get your anatomy book look carefully at the hull because it does not look right at all.
@@OzScalemodeling not many real images of Yamato, few more of her sister ship but going on drawings in the anatomy book and that fack that no other model, including the 2013 Tamiya tool have them. there are other issues to. mines on order
I can share you a japanese modeler webpage if you need reference for correction...i been doing alot of research for this ship for for almost 2 years collecting references and material..can tell you the premium flagship tamiya kit still has issues.
I think at the end of ww2, the Japanese ship builders and engineers burned and destroyed all of the drawings and engineering blue prints for the yamoto battle ship . Thats what I have heard and that's why there is not much on the yamoto battle ship apart from a few photos. And during it's construction the battle ship Yamoto was constructed in complete secrecy so that probably has contributed to the lack of information or facts about the ship. Suggestion what if they IJN had the chance to convert a Yamoto battle ship to a aircraft carrier WAW that would have been something to see ! . Thanks for the show and information on this splendid model a possible future project for me to do.

If I had known that Trumpeter is well known for inaccuracies of their Models, I had never bought this Kit! This Kit has an enorous amount of errors! If you want to get an accurate Model of the Yamato, you have to do a lot of additional work and rebuilding! Without an UPgrade Set, where most of the errors are fixed, you will only get an average Yamato Model! If you want to build it ootB and having no interest of accuracy, it is okay. But for people who want to get the best result, it is a '"bad" Kit.

Howdy. Was going to recommend Model Monkey for 3d "bits" but he only seems to have IJN ventilators.
Panama Can lock (original ones) were 900 x 110 x 40 feet, so, US ships held to WL dimensions of ±880 x 108 x 35 as a maximum.
And, while larger than your tub, that kit would fit on your sofa :-)
You'll need about a pint of Kure gray and Hull Red for this beastie. You will have the exciting bit of having a large number of superstructure decks which were covered in russet-red-brown linoleum, which will make for some evil masking.
Neat Yamato triva:
There was an elevator in the central command tower.
Much of the ship had air conditioning to combat hot Pacific weather.
Before the last battle, the decks were "painted" with ash and turpentine to darken them (many arguments on what color that was)
IJN fielded an "canister" anti-aircraft shell for the 18" guns, but those were never actually used.
That would be amazing to see, I have see video's of it. 😀
The Anatomy of a ship Yamato has detailed images. I will be buying that. 👍
nice, looks like you'll need a bigger bench!
Wow, huge. Will a bigger bench be needed?
I could always build it on the floor 🤔 Cheers.
I reckon your gonna need a fair bit of paint for that hull 🤔😂😂 carn't wait for you to start it tho👍👍
Yeah probably prime from a spray can eh 😉
Hi Peter , the special glue from Metro Hobbies has just rolled up for the wooden deck it is called Super Phatic Glue description goes Ultra thin foam safe, odourless , penetrating, Bonds: wood, foam, plastic ,& carbon fibre, GRP the company's name is Deluxe Materials, they sent me 3 containers, suppose to resist our heat we will see when the summer comes .
Sounds interesting 🤔 you know some decks already come with adhesive backing would you use this glue also?
Peter that's the problem with it , the adhesive they use doesn't hold up sticky at first but after 12 months no real adhesive left & with the Aussie summer the adhesive gives up , now I have 2 choices one is the deck from Pontos when it comes or paint it the way Nigel suggested in his video I'm not sure yet .
@@garywood1973 This glue sounds like it will work, I will order some... Thanks for sharing this product info 👍
@@OzScalemodeling no worries, ask for Adam if that helps
Great out of box review looks like a real nice kit...I would say the size is impressive but I have built the 1/200 Yamato before....just the old Nichimo kit and that was a difficult build....would I buy this.....no.....but if this company does the Battleship Fuso or my all time favourite ship the IJN Akagi in 1/200 I'm in hook..line and sinker!!!!
Oh yes that Akagi would be amazing ... cheers mate. 👍
I had this pre-oredered from hobbylink japan as soon as it was announced but sadly had to cancel it due to the cost and the almost 200 USD shipping at a bad time due to having just been let go from my job so money is now real tight until I can find a new one
That's a shame, I'm am sure things will improve and you can order another one. All the best to you finding a job 👍
Looks like an epic kit Peter. Is there a Wooden Deck Set available for it?
Not that I know of ..yet. 😀
Yes please. 👍
Спасибо за подробный обзор!
So need his kit, but know one here in NZ has got it..... the wait goes on!
Wow that sux, and ordering from Australia 🇦🇺 would cost a fortune in postage.
@@OzScalemodeling I've just ordered one, should have by the end of the year.... Hopefully
Hi Peter
Good unboxing she has plenty to keep one occupied.
But just a word of warning make sure you have some reference material as you are building 13 small boats and 4planes and there is no where in the instructions they tell you to fit them.
Cheers
Denn8s
Thanks for the tip, I will be searching a lot of reference material 👍

Is the kit capable of being converted to RC?..........I know Tamiya and Lindberg offers RC conversions kits for some of their ship models. Does this company do the same?
I'm not sure, maybe someone else knows and can comment here?🤔
Hi Peter , yep that time again , deck "ZE" main super structure the 6 lower hatches are upside down it's even listed on page 39 of the instructions , tell me who puts a view port at the bottom of the hatch self defeating I would think, to all modellers doing this kit keep your eyes open , & enjoy till the next problem .
I watched a very well made movie about a Japanese mathematical genius that was working to get the Yamato canceled in favor for carriers. It was on Tubi. Well worth the watch it is called The Great War of Archimedes.
oh thanks I will look that up...Cheers 👍
Now Pontos1:200 scale upgrade set for Monochrome/Gallery/Glow2b Yamato battleship kit available. Wood decks/ 380 CNC parts/ 7 frets/brass rotors/resin parts etc included
Thank you for informing viewers of this, I have been following the progress of Pontos and are still waiting for the price. As far as I am aware it available as pre-order with no solid date or price yet. Cheers
@Out of the Box Models Its not yet available, I hear they are just working out cost and postage rates. Search Keumho Kim or Trumpeter 1:200 Battleship Yamato ONLY tips n tricks on Facebook.
now I can inform you of the status of the set. It is on the final step of box designing. Pontos promised by this week so the pre order can be accepted in one week.
De-cals thank you.
Lets see how good this kit turrets compare to fujimi 1/200 collection sets..so far we know the fujimi is top notch and is a good upgrade for the old 1/200 nichimo kit.
Yes the fujimi ones are real nice 👍
You may have seen these. They're both good: (book) Requiem for Battleship Yamato by Yoshida Mitsuru and (film) Yamato ("2005 Japanese war film").
I'm trying to find that film with subtitles to watch and I will check up on the book to. Thanks 😊
@@OzScalemodeling If you can't find the film, let me know, and I'll mail you my copy. It has subtitles.
seems a shame that you get a wood deck for this! Cant wait to see build video
I'm sure someone will produce one hopefully sooner rather than later. 😉

If they come out with an "as commissioned" version I will jump all over it. I am converting an old 1/200 scale to "as commissioned" and adding hull plating. What a challenge.
Wow that must be amazing, I don't know what the difference would be
Hi Peter , have you tried dry fitting the stern of the Yamato yet ?, a rude surprise you get 22 cm of plastic you can't use & falls 7 cm short of mid ships I have no idea why this was done , when you try it you should see what I mean unfortunately we did pay for it , question at this time is do I cut it out or leave it given my Fujimi turrets do go that deep, let me know what you think ..thanks
So the deck doesn't fit at all? Surely that can't be right or there would be a recall 🤔
@@OzScalemodeling Fits perfectly. Part ZD just extends quite a distance forward under the main deck. It's not a problem.
It was done to give some depth to the aircraft hangar bay and if you want to open the hatches either side
Wot huge kit way beyond my attention span & where do u put it maybe add on a new room lol !!? Plastic moels are reaching a whole new era good luck with that
It won't even fit in the bathtub 😉
Moulded on De-Gausing cable, not good.
The hull appears to need a lot of work, not sure what all the lumps are on the bulbous bow are but they need removing, when you get your anatomy book look carefully at the hull because it does not look right at all.
Are you looking at the illustrations or are there real images of that? But yes I look forward to getting that book 👍
@@OzScalemodeling not many real images of Yamato, few more of her sister ship but going on drawings in the anatomy book and that fack that no other model, including the 2013 Tamiya tool have them. there are other issues to. mines on order
@@ModelkitStuff your new model Bench is to small lol.
@@OzScalemodeling it extends 😉maybe a group build with Ron lol
How is it compared to Trumpeter's same subject, same scale kit ?
Same kit!
Yes it's made by trumpeter. 😀

I can share you a japanese modeler webpage if you need reference for correction...i been doing alot of research for this ship for for almost 2 years collecting references and material..can tell you the premium flagship tamiya kit still has issues.
Any reference would help a lot, my email is in the bottom of the description on this page. Cheers 👍
I don't have the patience to buy something that will take years to build.
But imagine the end result. 😉 Thanks for you comment.
Yes I heard that also :)
🙂
Peter , go to part "ZD" even in the diagram it is way to long , dry fit the part & it confirms my claim.
$700 aud.
You are going to need a bigger table not a bigger boat.
$600.00+ for that model!!!!..............................Wife just said get the divorce papers out, IF, I even thought about purchasing it! ------ ps: It's pronounced "Ya-MUH-Tow, NOT Yah-mah-toe
I'm going to blame my Aussie accent 😆. Tell her how nice it will look next to her new vacuum and dishwasher 🤣👍

@Simple Jack I have a storage shed and closet full of kits.................MAYBE some day I'll build one of them...LOL!

A Japanese friend told me it’s pronounced “Yuh-MAH-toe/Yuh-MAH-too.” I think it’s one of those words that people say differently with their accents, like how I’ve heard Brits say “YAMA-toe.”
I don’t like you anymore. You get all the nice things.
I just came here to read the rivet counters comments!! 😂😂 they f*kn can’t help themselves!
If you’re reading this Peter, enjoy the kit mate, I have the 1/350 Tamiya version on one of my benches right now, started, but a long way from completion due to me cleaning up some “shelf of doom” builds on another bench from a few years ago.
I thought the 1/350 was big enough. This thing is biblical! Have fun mate. 👍
@@thatfelladownunder9396 they are muppets hey. Half of them have no content on their channels yet claim
To be awesome
@@hibbosmodelbench2351 yeah I don’t have any content on mine … yet …. But I’m happily average. 🤓
It building plastic models …. Not interplanetary species saving spacecraft. No lives depend on how any of us build our kits.
Anyway, I like the Aussies cos they’re chill. Oh and if I did videos it’d be too similar to Peter, minus the beard, same build, voice, demeanour. So I think one of us on TH-cam is enough. 😂
@@thatfelladownunder9396 hahahaha. I don’t care about accuracy. I just enjoy it
If I had known that Trumpeter is well known for inaccuracies of their Models, I had never bought this Kit!
Thank you for sharing your opinion. I made the video so people can come to there own conclusion, cheers.
@@OzScalemodeling I was very happy when the first photo was leaked. I had stopped my Nichimo Yamato n 1993. And was waiting for.a new Model. I'm a real Yamato Nerd since 1981. So after finding more and more errors, I was and I'm still frustated about Trumpeter. They often didn't use any source! There are four main sources in case if the Yamato: Skulski's AotS books (pld and new version), the 1/10 Yamato (Kure Museum), Model Art No. 745 Superillustration Battleship Yamato, and Gakken No. 11, 20 and 54. Just as an Info for you. And yes, it is nice for people to see your Video👍
