WHAT HAPPENED TO GOOD GENES? | CAROLINE HIRONS | AD

  • Hi Everyone!
    When I mentioned in a recent video that I would find out what happened to Good Genes in the UK, Sunday Riley got in touch and asked me to make a dedicated video to ensure the reasons for the change were crystal clear.
    There was no script, they didn't see the video before it was finalised and they answered all my questions openly and fully.
    *EDIT: The email from Sunday Riley re fake reviews was leaked about six hours after this video went live. the two events are totally unrelated and my response to that can be found in this blog post: www.carolinehi... *
    Hopefully this will clear up a lot for the UK/EU customer who has been asking me for months 'What Happened to Good Genes?'.
    The Good Genes original Lactic formula is:
    7% Lactic Acid with a PH of 3.
    The new Good Genes Glycolic is:
    7% Glycolic with a 3% Lactic Acid Salt and a PH of 3.5.
    The original is still on sale in the USA, but no longer fits under regulations set for the EU. The Glycolic version is currently only available in the EU but there is potential to be able to buy both via Sunday's website (when it's back up and running - imminently).
    Good Genes is available from Spacenk.com: bit.ly/2OrAFRO
    Any Qs hit me with them!

    I just have to say that you have entirely changed the way I look at skincare. A subject that used to send my head into a spin and put me to sleep is made so exciting and interesting with your sense of humor and the way you explain it. I agree that you would take the gold in analogies. Thank you for making learning how to care for my skin such an experience. Love and hugs.

I was looking into UK return policy on beauty products last night (USA are very lucky in that regard) anyway I read on a blog last night that if products don’t do what they claim or are not as described most reputable places SHOULD provide a refund. Just something to keep in mind I guess.

      Forgive my ignorance, but if L would be for texture, G would be for aging, what Mandelic would be specifically for? I used Mandelic Acid in the past, as well as Lactic, and loved them both, but struggle to understand what exactly differentiates them.

    I just wanted to know why brands like Sunday Riley are so expensive? I know formulas would be totally different but essentially if you are mainly paying for a glycolic acid exfoliatant then there are much cheaper alternatives. For example The ordinary glycolic toner 7% at ph around 3.5 / 3.7 and also pixi do a 10% glycolic acid serum (couldn't find ph level to this). You have educated your audience so well over the years that we have become savy in asking questions like this but aren't in the industry to understand and justify why some products are extortionate and other products are made at a much more affordable price, again I know as you say 'formula is king' but if you're buying something for the same main ingredient then why are prices world's apart? Would love to see a video of you discussing this topic. x

    • @CarolineHirons01

      Honestly it all comes down to formula and then eventually the brands preference. The Ordinary is ‘ordinary’. It’s a tough glycolic recommended for use 1 x a week. This can be used twice a day. And then ultimately a brand has a right to set their price you know? A Mini is a car. So is a Rolls-Royce. They both get you there, one is just a more luxurious ride. ☺️

    • @cheyennefindeis5875
      @cheyennefindeis5875 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@CarolineHirons01 You have the best way of describing things in a way we can understsnd 😄. Would still like to see this topic discussed more in depth, especially when people use the term 'dupe' in which there are clear differences sometimes but other times when a product is marketed that it includes a certain main ingredient and another product claims the same then a consumer sometimes it's a head scratching moment figuring out which one to get if all you paying to get the same results of which it claims and one maybe packaged or feel slightly nicer.

    • @damalulani
      @damalulani 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      you kind of answered your own question there. two products could have the exact same ingredients but the slight difference in percentage could make all the difference in performance and texture. not to mention brands source their ingredients differently, the origins, the qualities, whether it's ethical or not, there are so many factors that go into these things, all ingredients and formulas aren't created the same. also brands with a corporate backing can get ingredients at a drastically different price point, not to mention production and lab support, while indie brands have to pay everything out of pocket. everytime a formula gets sent back to the lab for a fix-up, it's a another huge bill to pay, and god knows how many times it might take to get a formula right (brands like the ordinary aren't known to have the most sophisticated formulas so that also naturally cut down the overhead). a similar t-shirt could cost 5 pounds from primark (sewn by child in china) and 300 pounds from a parisian luxury brand, they could have the same exact mark-ups, and in many cases the 5 pound t-shirt might have a higher mark-up. that's just how supply chains work.

    I dont know why so many people are against glycolic acid just because it penetrates deeper than lactic acid. Ive used almost all kinds of acids from many products including Alpha H, DCL and DE, and it is glycolic and mandelic acids that work perfect on my skin with clogged pores. So im so excited to try Good Genes this time!

    Good genes in Australia is 5% lactic acid. It’s one of the few exfoliants that don’t irritate my rosacea. I never get an immediate sting, instead I deal with red sore skin hours after glycolic application. It can last for a couple of days.

    Hi Caroline, love the video as always! Quick question, I'm 23, have oily, hormonal spot prone skin, usually around my chin and jaw, nothing major, and my skincare regime up until a few weeks ago was just a foam cleanser and moisturiser morning and evening, but since discovering you I have completely revamped my routine (no foaming cleaners in sight!). I'm now using an oil cleanser morning and evening (budget is a concern), and a concoction of other products that contain most of the ingredients on your anti-ageing cheat sheet (a godsend!) and am now also hoping to try Good Genes at some point, preferably the Lactic version if that ever becomes available in the UK again... I'm not usually prone to sensitive skin and I've had no burning or redness with any of the products I've started using (I've started on acids, mists and different moisturisers and will ramp it up again when I can). However, I've been breaking out more than usual in the past week or so, and around a different time of the month than usual. My question is, is this to be expected with a complete skincare overhaul such as the one I've had recently or is it possible that this is my skin reacting badly? Sorry for the long-winded question, I just wanted to give you all the info I could to make it easier for you to give an answer appropriate to my skin!

Then I tried The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% and I cannot tell the difference except one costs $12! The Ordinary Glycolic Toner 7% pH 3.6 for 240 ml is elegant with Tasmanian Pepperberry and ginseng it’s hands down my favourite ...is there a point where you ask Sunday Riley why 100 quid? Are consumers getting too savvy about ingredients and find this a tad insulting?

    I hope you can do a dedicated video on Glycolic acid and how all your favourite, tried and tested, Glycolic acid products stack up against each other. Judging from your glowing review here, I assume this must have made it to your hall of fame. But I remember not too long you introduced us to Alpha-H's liquid gold and the Pixi Glow Tonic and you were waxing lyrical about them too. I get what you mean that it all comes down to formulation and I love that Rolls Royce/Mini analogy but for us the consumers, it's really important to know if a skincare product is really worth sacrificing a week's meal (depending on which country you live in) for.

    • @CarolineHirons01
      @CarolineHirons01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Caroline, I have a question about using acids in my skin, I’m getting since the last year some capillaries around my mouth. I got a facial, they are only a few ones but I’m obsessed with them. I have sensitive skin, easy redness... in a facial they told me not to use lactic acid, is that a factor that make it worst?
    I’m using retinol in the night, is that also something that can affect it.
    If you have any tips for it, I would be eternally grateful! Thanks for your content!

    In case Sunday Riley really are coming to the comments :) Can you tell us if the silicones in the serum might block absorption of any ingredients layered on top? If the answer is yes I’d use cheaper products on top rather than wasting anything special, so it would be great to know. Thanks!

      @@CarolineHirons01 I am so glad you answered this. I don't have a problem with silicones, and have noticed some products with them help my skin. (Especially with epidermal water loss.) But, I was under the impression that they did block absorption as they are occlusive. Although, I do know silicones are different. Can you do a vlog/blog post about the differences in silicones? How to tell, etc? I have been only using products w silicones at the end of my routine, and no more than two, if at all. There are some serums I would love to try, but have avoided because of the silicones. Ty!! #skinfreak 😉😂😘

      I don't know why they changed it, but I'm loving the new formula. This formula seems IME better for sensitive skin; the prior formula stung my eye area badly, whereas this one does not. It's definitely got less of a scent, and spreads very easily even though it only foams slightly. Overall I'm much happier with the newer version.

      I absolutely agree. Glycolic Acid seems to really irritate my skin no matter what. So I’m sticking to the lactic acid. It’s amazing!!!
      The way I like to use this especially when I have a few break outs or slept in my makeup SEE BELOW 😒 🙈 judge not...my days are so long.
      Use Fresh Sugar Face Polish, which exfoliates the dead skin cells. It leaves an oily feel on the skin after rinsing it off so I use a dab (dime sized amount) of Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and rinse with cool water. After I pat dry, I use the Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid. After 1-2 minutes, I use a q-tip dipped in tea tree oil and spot treat the areas where I’m breaking out.
      WHEN I SAY THE NEXT MORNING THE BREAK OUTS ARE GONE, I MEAN IT!
      The combination of all 3 literally leave my skin baby smooth.
      💋 💋 💋
      Cheers to great skin and staying hydrated! 🥂

    So interesting and wonderful of Sunday Riley to be so great about this video! I do have a question -I’ve read the ph is actually 2.6 from multiple websites to include UK websites and US websites. Are these websites incorrect as I would think Sunday Riley would know their PH better than independent websites. A couple of these claim to “test” actual ph hence that’s how they got their ph number. Are these sites incorrect on the ph? Thank you as always for such excellent content both on TH-cam and your blog!

      Caroline Hirons Hi Caroline (Amanda from Jersey/living in Oz here...we spoke a while ago, you likely won’t remember, why would you 🤣). I have the same problem - no tingle - and I usually have the world’s most sensitive skin (I go red with some products, burn in the sun etc.) I bought the P50 after learning about it via you and get this, NO tingle!! I bought it to try and deal with some weird roughness on the lower part of my cheeks that I’ve developed after years of babysoft skin. I’ve ended up getting a prescription for Retrieve from my GP and was trying to avoid it but think that may be my only option now. Or the Good Genes? Any thoughts? It's been a couple years since I ran out and didn't know where to buy without first paying my local dermatologist $350 just to get the prescription, then i have to buy the actual cream on top so it winds up costing alot of money. So I've been using the Paul's Choice 1%. I'm hoping to save the $350 to see the dermatologists in my area and just buy a clinical strength Tretinoin or RetinA. Is this possible? Can you recommend where in Canada or the USA that I can buy this clinical strength product? I live in British Columbia Canada, but I travel to the USA monthly so I can buy there as well. I just don't know where to buy it. Without paying a dermatologist $350 first just to get a refill of a product is know works great for me from the previous dermatologist who prescribed it years ago! I'm looking for the faster results like I had before with the clinical strength. Your help would be awesome, even if you point me in the right direction and I'll look from there. There’s no such thing as 0.5 or 0.75% tretinoin. The strongest tretinoin available is 0.4, iirc, and it’s practically impossible to get as it’s mostly made for clinical studies. The most common % you can buy are 0.1, 0.05, 0.04, 0.025, 0.02 and 0.01. Tretinoin is prescription only in the US and quite expensive, you’d have better luck with buying it in Mexico, if you get there, it’s dirt cheap. otherwise, there are website that send it from countries like India, where it’s widely available and very affordable.

      It's out of frustration from asking her the same question for 2 years, and reading loads of others asking...and having her reply, "whenever you want- as a treatment or exfoliant!" That doesn't help me. It's an expensive product, so it'd be nice to know how to use it. It contains silicones and other occlusives. Occlusives usually seal everything underneath in and won't let anything you put on top get through- except certain oils.
