  • Join us today on the ultimate Hungarian street food tour here in Budapest! We travel all throughout the city in search of the best street food, as well as some Hungarian favorites! We start our search at Karavan Street Food Budapest where we order up a classic Lángos and Kürtőskalács (chimney cake). We also try some traditional beef goulash, Töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage), strudels and even the most ridiculously big Hungarian kielbasa! We also explore Central Market Hall, the most iconic shopping area here in Budapest.

I grew up eating Hungarian food. I wasn't a fan of most of the food my mom cooked. When my dad passed away in 1983 I started missing those food's. Within the past 15 to 20 years I had my mom teach me to make some of her Hungarian recipes. I am so glad I did because she ended up living with dementia for just over 10 years. She passed away in Dec 2021. I was given her old cook books. Now I just have to figure out how to convert them into English. Can't wait to see where you guys go next in Hungary.

Thumbs up for you guys because you’ve tried the traditional lángos with the garlic+créme fraiche+cheese trinity and not with extra 1 million toppings that Hungarians wouldn’t eat. TH-cam is full of videos with “tourist trap” lángos, sadly.

The deep fried dough with the cheese and sour cream looked the most yummy. Here in South Africa we call deep fried dough with a filling "VETKOEK". The most popular is a CURRY MINCEMEAT VETKOEK. We have so many cultures of people with the most delicious foods.

Next time try to find a traditional restaurant! Where it is not written anything in English! You have to try töltött paprika basically stuffed paprika, rakott krumpli basically layered potatoes with egges and sausages, and try to find home made beigli with poppy seeds, this one is basically a dough rolled up and in the inside you have poppy seeds. It is definitely my favorite one!!!

Omg, this is a great intro of Hungarian dishes, you picked the best ones really. Apart from that hot-dog, less is more: Hungarian sausage is to be eaten with bread and mustard, done. Yummm, living in the UK I miss all of these! 🤤

So many choices. My mom used to make the goulash, occasionally stuffed cabbage (hers had ground beef & stuff inside) and kielbasa and she was of Irish decent! My dad's mother's (she was born here in 1889) family was originally from Bavaria and that was the influence.

Unfortunately, most Hungarian food is a bit "spoiled" by kitchens cooking for tourists. Most Hungarian food is (also) good because of its simplicity.
Fortunately, you asked for the traditional lángos with cheese (sajt) and sour cream (tejföl) [sajtos-tejfölös], which is why it tasted so good. Many people load it up with everything else, but Hungarian people usually eat it in the following variations:
    - plain, just sprinkled with salt
    - with garlic (fokhagymás)
    - with cheese and sour cream. (sajtos-tejfölös)
Oh, and they don't eat it like a pizza and they don't eat it with cutlery, they just eat it out of their hands.
The strudel was fine. The basic flavors are usually apple, sour cherry, poppy seed.
These are also mixed: sour cherry-poppy, pumpkin-poppy.
The kürtőskalács (chimney cake) was authentic, that's the basic flavouring, with cinnamon. I can see it being filled with ice cream in some places, but this variation was also spread just for the tourists. The essence of the horn cake is that it is still steaming hot, has a thin, rollable dough, and is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The gulyásleves (goulash soup) looked good.
In the end, the kolbász (sausage) would have been much tastier if it had been prepared in the traditional way that Hungarians eat: 1 sausage + 1-2 slices of bread + mustard (or horseradish and mustard).
Did I see that the stuffed cabbage was accompanied by a little lángos? It is not customary...
Hungarian food is mostly good in cold weather, as it is fatty, slightly spicy and high in calories.
Of course, there are some summer dishes that you haven't tried yet, such as gyümölcsleves (fruit soup) - worth a try!

Good pronunciation of the Langos. Garlic is a must have on it.
The cottage cheese strudel “túrós rétes” is my favorite.
I think lot of foreigners think the Goulash or gulyás is a stew but actually a soup. We have a stew as well but that is called pörkölt.
These foods definitely not for a hot day. I like a cold fruit soup or gyümölcs leves on hot days.

In Hungary, Goulash is a soup. If you want to have the thick stew, try Pörkölt(this is what is known as Goulash outside of Hungary). The best one is beef with red wine, or deer. If you stick with the soup, make sure to ask for the red chilli paste, and put a small amount into it. Oh, and both goes well with sour cream :)

The fried bread you had first is like Navajo fry bread which is good. I even had a Navajo native teach me how to make it the way his grandmother taught him, with no measuring spoons or cups. I'm enjoying your travel videos. One of my dearest friends is Hungarian. Her family escaped to Australia during WWII and then to America. She made baklava for me and taught me to make it, too. My goulash is thicker, more of a stew than the soupy one you had.

You should have tried the traditional fruit soup - it's served ice cold. Especially the sour cherry soup is great and refreshing on a hot day.
