    What a beautiful and simple idea for a maxi dress, a knee length dress or a camisole. For beginners who find the construction confusing why not find instructions online for a cami top and follow those.

    Can you help me with the “skirt” part? I understand you trace a tank top for the top part of the dress, what about the lower part?

    • @mothersuperior6751
      @mothersuperior6751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      McKenzie Reints
      Hi McKenzie.
      You wondered how the skirt part was made. It was all part of the same process but it is difficult to tell from the video. Let me see if I can help.
      This is how I would do it.
      Trace your tank top. Making a note of the length of the straps. You need to work out the distance from the shoulder to where the strap meets the dress. Which is, Half the strap length.
      Then measure from your shoulder to the finished length you want the dress to be. Use a friend to help with this.
      Next take your pattern piece and mark it down the centre . Now slice it as was demonstrated, cutting very close to the top but try to keep the paper still attached. Once it is sliced you seperate the slits and secure the stretched pattern to another piece of paper. As per the video.
      Now. My instructions will differ slightly from the demonstration. Cut the new pattern piece down the centre. This cut line becomes your centre back and centre front. You should now have two pattern pieces that match.
      Fold your fabric in half lengthwise. Place one pattern piece with the centre line on the fold and at the top of the fabric. Now you need that measurement. The one from the shoulder to the top of the bodice. Let’s say it was 12cm. Take your total dress length that you want (shoulder to floor or knee or mid length) and minus the strap length from that. But at this point you also want to add on the hem allowance. I usually allow 3cm.
      What you do now. Is to measure down the folded side of your fabric from the top of the pattern piece to the hem length you want. ( - the strap length and adding the hem allowance.)
      Now, your pattern piece has another edge, which is your side seam. You use a long straight edge and lay it beside your side seam. You then draw down your fabric, at an angle, from the under arm to the hem.
      (Use the same length as you used on the fold)
      The last step is to draw your cut line for the hem. That is simply a gentle curve from the folded side to the hem line on the selvedge. The affect you are going for is a party cone with the top cut off.
      Once this fabric is cut out you can use this piece to cut around to get the other half of the dress.
      I hope that helps.

      Mothersuperior67 ahhh thank you so much makes total sense now. Thank you!! I love this dress, please keep the designs coming! I’m a newbie who makes so many mistakes and I’m still in the everything looks homemade phase, LOL! So any helpful things that are easier than most that can help me hone those not so homemade skills is so helpful. So thank you.

      Come back and tell us how it goes.
      You could always use an old bed sheet or pick up a duvet from a thrift store to test your pattern. This will also help you know what length of fabric you need to buy.

      Vanessa Castro Chesterton i tried it out both ways: to spread it until the end (the bottom), and stop spreading on the knees. and if you go down till the end it looks beautiful, like in the video. only mistake i did, i had the wrong fabric. so in the last two years, since my posting i made this dress 4 times 😂 but i love it and you can wear it everywhere: if you go out, take a nice purse, a nice hair band... and you look chic, on the beach, in the garden... it looks amazing and i got asked alot from where i bought the dress 😂

    • @Petra-R
      @Petra-R 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vanessa Castro Chesterton btw: if you have an old bed sheet you can try it out first. if you dont like it that wide, you can cut it smaller any time
