  • In this video I compare three of my favourite tents for one person for four season use - Two of them are classified as two person tents ha ha. I recently have raved about the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 tunnel tent. Here it is up against my two favourite Hillebergs (Akto and Nammatj 2) - I own them all so I can share my honest view after thorough testing - Has the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 got any sort of chance? I hope that you enjoy this content. Its a detailed watch -

      Hi Daniel, thank you for your positive feedback... I missed some detail here actually but then the video just gets too long and probably less views. One such detail now that you mention it is the fly zipper lock. Fjallraven use and auto lock zip to stop it opening in high winds. Cant get it to work so I have to peg it... Hilleberg have a more simple system that works 100 percent where a toggle goes through the slider and it just cant come un done... There you are, something extra ... ATB and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Tom

    Well that was a surprise 🤓 I thought there might have been 2 Hilleberg tents hitting eBay soon! Great to see them all lined up like that. It’s clear they’ve all been subjected to plenty of challenging weather which is valuable for anyone looking at any of these tents. Nicely done Tom 👍

    I always enjoy your thoughts on tents! I’m admittedly a Fjallraven fanboy. Packs, jackets, trousers, sweaters, etc. I just love and trust their gear. But when it comes to tents. I have three Hillebergs and they are just the tents I don’t need to worry about. Especially when the conditions are less than ideal! They are just so incredibly durable. I do love the look of the Abisko though. Anyways, all great tents and enjoyed hearing you talk about them! All the best 👍

      Hi Going Solo, great to hear from you again and your many comments on my videos are much appreciated. I tried Fjallraven trousers once but they were not for me but I still gave this tent a chance and apart from its lack of durability it was fantastic.... Maybe I have been unlucky but my gut feeling says not.... Hilleberg and a few other brands say 30d fabric is the minimum for 4 season use on the flysheet and after this I definitely agree. I tested a MSR tent with a 20 d fly and it had taken a fair bit of damage too... The Abisko has some amazing thought put into it and really wind stable and fab ventilation too... ATB and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Tom

    Tom, this is a top class, well researched review. You have become the benchmark for testing tents. I really enjoyed the detail in this film, and for anyone considering a one person tent this would be a great reference. I really like the look if the Nammatj 2. I maybe should have gone down this route instead of the Soulo, as I’ve discovered that a pure one man tent in the winter is a tough squeeze.

    Great video! I bought the Hilleberg Akto a few month ago and tried it for the first time last weekend. Rain, 1 degree celsius, 100% humidity, and it did great. Really enjoy the combo of light weight, sturdy and strong fabric, and the vestibule. Very happy :)

      I bought the akto for the durability and the vestibule which is really useable especially for cooking. Just unclip the inner at the top until you are ready for bed, and you have much improved headroom. I feel totally secure in this tent in the hills.

    Hi Tom, I bought a second hand trango 2 many years ago based on your review and loved it until it met its demise in a Scottish storm.
    I now have the Akto, a trailstar and a doumid, one of the big factors for me is site selection, I find I can sneak my tents in small spots, so I would keep the Akto.

      Hi Richard, great to hear you thoughts as a Nammatj owner. The 3 GT is some tent for sure. I have watched most of Bushman and Blues Videos and it would be interesting to see if his tents have taken any damage. I know one of them has a hole in the pole sleeve where a broken pole pushed through it. To be fair this can happen in any tent... ATB Tom

    Great honest evaluation of these tents, Tom. Seems like the Fjallraven has some innovative features but the bean counters may have been involved with the choice of thinner less durable fabrics. Thanks for your dedication to this channel, always great content.

      Hi Denis, thank you for watching and your comment. Great to hear that you enjoyed the content. Yes light weight sells tents and for a lot of users this works fine but hasn't worked for my particular needs. It has kind of helped me in a way as I was tortured between the weight saving and space increase but loved the fabrics of the Hilleberg's. So now its all sorted for me, I have gave Fjallraven a try and now will let it go... ATB Tom

    Hi Tom. Thanks for another informative video. I have had an Abisko 2 Lite for a fair old while and haven't had the issue you describe. For heavier use, I add the 70 denier 10,000 HH Abisko 2 footprint and a second pole set. This takes the total weight of that setup to 2.7 kg... still lighter and less expensive than the Hilleberg. Having used both makes, I find Fjallraven design features and attention to detail to be second to none and again, have no issues to report quality and durability- wise. Just my two pennies-worth of course. Thanks again Tom 👍

    • @theknowlodge8294
      @theknowlodge8294 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for sharing your experience of the Abisko Lite 2. I am honestly glad that it is a positive one. I am sure the tent is super stable when double polled and still very light. I must admit that I love the Fjallraven attention to detail and at this sort of money attention to detail is important. For me thought the durability has been an issue so I have actually contacted Fjallreven to hear their response... ATB and thank you once again for your thoughts and experience. Tom

  • @luesveis
    @luesveis ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, Tom. Good attention to detail as always, and very interesting.
    If I was to have only one solo four season tent, it would be Hilleberg Soulo: good wind and weather resistance, good livability, not too heavy.
    Akto is a good four season tent, but it does not handle snow loading well: snow piles up on the roof, making it even more cramped inside. That said, my trips the three last weeks here in snowy Oslo have all been with Akto, mainly to keep pack weight down. PS: if you undo the three topmost toggles to the inner tent, you can reach the zippers to the end vents from inside.
    I loved my green Nammatj 2 back in the days, but after around 300 nights of wear and tear, I pensioned it a few years ago, in favor of smaller red tents.
    Cheers from Norway

      Hey great to hear from you and awesome to hear of your tent experience especially with the conditions that you would get in Norway... It's great to have comments from users of the tents under review in my video. Yes the Soulo is a fab tent and certainly will handle snow loads very well and much better than the flat roof profile of the Akto. Thank you for the venting tip and I will try it on my next camp... Excellent, honest review as always. Ultra light tents definitely have their benefits but as you pointed out the trade off seems to be their durability. They are really nice to have when wanting to go ultra light but not for every day use. The Hillebergs seem to have a good compromise between weight performance and durability.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, thank you for watching and your comment. After this experience for me I am now not sitting on the fence any more or tortured and torn between the two. In one of my previous reviews of my Hilleberg Soulo I actually said that if you go lighter fabrics then you sacrifice durability. I should have stuck to that but I am willing to try different things and give other brands a chance. ATB and hope to get out with you soon in the Akto or Nammatj. Tom

    Great vid, I love the Nammatj 2! For my lightweight reasonable weather tent, I went much lighter and cheaper with a Lanshan pro. If I was feeling flush, a more expensive hiking pole tent would be on the cards. It’s a tough slot to fill, light and strong!

    Really liked the review and the effort put in. I have always put the Vestibule of Hilleberg Nammatj 3 GT and Hilleberg Nallo 2 adding Guyline to vent hood (pain in way door opens would prefer Abisko 2 design) I find this way the profile is more blunt and takes wind better than the foot end also quieter. The Nallo 2 also the roof does not get pushed down, will work for Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2.
    Keep up the Tent testing as very interesting to see various models wind performance.

Fjallraven have really thought it through regarding wind stability. Great review. I have the fjallraven abisko lite 2 and I am more than happy with it. To me my way of Wildcamping is if the wind forecast is over 40 mph I stay at home. I looked at the hillebergs but the price and weight were the reasons I went with the fjallraven. Yes you expect lighter materials and logically they are not as strong. But agreed for your style of camps in heavy winds you required the assurance from your tent. Happy with my tent though at £430 last year it’s now selling at £700. Should have bought three lol😂

    Great video as ever Tom.
    Personally speaking, my ‘tent journey’ is not dissimilar to yours….in the sense that, I resisted buying Hillebergs for a long time….for a number of reasons. Cost. (Less so) the weight. The fact that everyone was telling me to get one. (My obstinate nature at play there). 😂
    But ultimately, after trying many different tent brands, I eventually came back to The Hille’s.
    They just stand the test of time, in every way. Strength, durability, comfort and quality….they tick every box, and then some.
    I think it’s also worth mentioning that it’s not just the denier of the fabric, but the way it’s ‘treated’.
    Hilleberg triple silicone treat their fabrics, which makes them extremely resistant to tearing, way above what the denier count would seem to allow for.
    That’s also a big factor.
    So in the end, I gave up and accepted the inevitable. 😂

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dom great to hear from you and thank you for your feedback... Really interesting to hear your tent journey and absolutely the same as mine. I resisted so long too due to the price. Now I have owned 6 and tested 12.... Not a single fault or stitch out of place or damage on any... I have subjected all of mine to over 50mph winds as I get that here even in August and they have performed outstandingly well. Thats why I use them. Not just because if the name but because they have protected me in harsh conditions again and again and took no damage. The durability is amazing. So now I have an email alert in with my friends at Tentes 4 Saisons for another one and the Fjallraven is sold and just not the tent for me... Was open enough to try and now that's that itch scratched.
      Yes regarding the silicone treatment I didn't mention it as Fjalraven also treat this fabric with multiple layers of silicone on both sides so then was far as I am aware its more down to the denier thing... ATB and great to have you watching and commenting on my Vids as I know you have a serious number and experience with quality tents... Tom

    Great review. I have many tents - from Dyneema fabrics to large Hillebergs. A trend with me, and maybe it's because I started backpacking in high school in the late-1980's, is that I tend to prefer heavier hiking boots, tents, and other items such as white gas stoves instead of butane. I should also mention that my favorite seasons are all but summer. At the end of the day, when actually going somewhere, I choose heavier products overall and I am more comfortable with them physically and psychologically. Hopefully I can continue to carry everything as I go into my 40's and beyond.

      Completely agree. Durability and trustworthiness is of prime importance on trips, where there are no backups.
      Did an 11 day hike with my son across the Arctic tundra in Greenland, completely self-sustained and off-trail.
      Our bags were heavy, but it was worth it. No obstacle stopped us, as our kit held up and endured. And; I had peace of mind the whole trip.

      Hi Shamus, great once again to hear from you. You have put it very well and that's the crux of the matter... I always use 40d dry bags and even they pick up small holes over time. 20D is just not for me and my type of 4 season use. A short time ago I caught the fabric on my Nammatj inner in the zip. I mean it was buried. Spent 10 mins pulling it out and not only was the fabric not holed there wasn't even a mark on it... If that had been 15d fabric then I know it would have been torn... Apart from all of this I really look forward to your next video when you are ready to film it. ATB and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Tom

    Hi Tom. A really good informative fair review. I'm much as yourself self funded when it comes to most of my equipment. I font do a lot of backpacking but some along. I mainly motorcycle camp in my RTW travels. Given that ypu are having to make a hard but informed experienced decision. For me I like a free standing tent so I differ in my needs. When traveling and you get up against the weather you may not have much choice of the camping conditions before you. I've chosen a couple of Hillebergs for my travel. A Staika and a Soulo, which won't arrive until April. I like a little extra space for my gear. I worked fifty years in the coal mines in low 36 to 45 inch coal on my hands and knees. I hate confinement. The sloping walls are confining and lend to being too close to an outside wall. That limits me to the choices I have. You however backpack and have found some really good equipment in your Hillebergs. The materials and workpersonship is far ahead of others. They are an investment much as z mortgage on a home but they perform very well in extreme environments. I've considered a Nallo 3 for backpacking someday. I do like the openness of the main doorway. I like the ability to view the world unrestricted. Hey safe travels. Enjoyed your vid. I know they take a fair amount of effort and work to do and produce. Cheers mate. Get out there

      Hey Sam, great to hear from you again and very interesting to hear your background in tents and work history... The Staika and Soulo will serve you very well. The Soulo is small but very strong and the Staika is very versatile. The Hilleberg tents are great and a real investment. I always say buy one and if it's not for you then sell it on and you might even make money. Now I have owned 6 Hillebergs and tested 12 in total and not a single fault or sign of damage on any. I sent an email to Fjallraven today so it will be interesting to hear their response.. Thank you for the positive feedback and the very best of luck with your new Hillebergs... ATB Tom

    Great honest summary! I agree - if you really want peace of mind in bad conditions found at higher altitudes, for one person, it has to be the Akto. The clincher for me was the large vestibule, you really can cook in it safely when it rains heavily. At lower levels in not so remote areas, almost any tent will do the job, Akto could be overkill, but I can only afford one tent.

      @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks Tom, I am trying a couple of things on my akto to increase headroom, first I disconnect the front part of the inner roof, or even most of it. Second I have cut 2 polystyrene cubes 100mm sides and put these under the poles, just ease the guys and then take them out at bedtime or if the wind gets up. I was considering a swap with an abisko lite 2 for more space, but peace of mind that comes with way stronger fabrics means I too am keeping it. Hi Tom, appreciate your reviews. I’m a bit obsessed with tents and find myself only drawn to Hillebergs anymore and appreciate your in-depth content. I have tried many of there tunnel tents and I am wondering in this review if the fjallraven is more of a competitor to the Nallo? Also, do you think the Enan with double poles a potentially better option than the Akto? Lastly, what do you think the max wind of a double poled and guyed Enan vs Akto would be? I own both of these tents and have gifted the Akto to my youngest son as he is now 6’4” and it’s the only tent I have that he fits in. I now own an Enan and Niak and am trying to decide if I should sell one for a 4th season option? I haven’t used the Enan it was orinionally for my youngest son but he likes the Akto more. I have a bit of a hard time getting in and out of it because I have upper back issues. I bought a used Anjan 2 for my oldest son and there isn’t any wind it can’t handle but it does get blown dirt into the tent interior just as the Niak does. I do enjoy my Niak but it has wind limits I would say in the 40-50mph range. I’m thinking of doubling up poles for it because I can get in and out easily. I was thinking also of fashioning a solid half door to block dirt and spin drift snow. I have had a Staika and loved it but it was for motorcycle camping and I sold it because we stopped riding and it’s too heavy to carry on my back for mostly solo plus dog use. I’m looking for my best option for a shoulder to early winter tent that will be mainly for me backpacking plus occasionally my 75lb German Shepherd and in an emergency my wife. She has health issues and won’t be backpacking long distance and usually sleeps in her hammock year round if there’s trees. We’re originally from Michigan but now live in northern Colorado and wind gusts up to 70 are a normal occurance, usually in the middle of the night and out of nowhere. In these conditions my Niak survived but it wasn’t fun. I had a corner peg and a guy line peg pull out. The Akto flapped around like a loose sail and my Staika didn’t know it was windy yet. I’m wanting a freestanding if possible because pitching into rocky ground is a problem more often than not where we live. I’m skeptical that I will fit in a soulo being 6’2” 220lbs and if I do I know I won’t get my dog in there with me. I’m curious about the Unna and really liked your review of it but I did note your opinion of its wind limits. I’m sorry for the length here. I have been pouring over TH-cam and have pretty much found your reviews spot on and just hoped to get your help. Take care.

      @@Oldrush You got to understand all tents have pros and cons.. Double polling isn't the be all and end all. It adds strength in one area but transfers stress to another. For high winds in excess of 40mph you should have a red label Hilleberg.. For durability with a dog consider black label... While you want freestanding you gotta compromise somewhere... Jannu, Kaitum, or Allak... best wishes Tom

    Firstly, again, another incredible review. 👍 Best on TH-cam. My findings having owned both the Abisko 2 and Nammatj are very similar to your own. I was mega impressed with the way the Abisko coped with high wind, but always questioned the longevity. Also, I really didn’t like the rear of the bathtub floor and how flat it was unless the ground was completely level. The vents also allowed rain to blow in a bit more easily than the Nammatj as they are not as deep. On one occasion my Abisko let loads of water in over the rear bath tub. Granted, it was a poor pitch due to the uneven ground, but the Nammatj with its sturdier bath tub would have been fine. I did try the Abisko 1 for quite a while but found the 20d unsuitable for such a large amount of unsupported fabric. It was very hard to get taught. I regret massively selling my Nammatj but am currently testing a Soulo. All in all, my honest opinion is that the Fjallraven is an incredible tent, but, in a storm or for sustained use I’d choose a Hilleberg. ATB

I agree totally with you and I had a previous Nammaty sold it and then after many years realised it was a great balance of everything and bought this one.. The Abisko here has lots of promise and for a few thought camps it delivered. I always cringed though at the 20d fabric as stress finds the weakest part and that is what happened here.. Possibly to the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2. At 60 years of age and doing the odd winter wild camp, weight is a consideration (yes I am getting weaker lol), and we all know we have to carry more weight in Winter to keep warm. Hi Tom. Very interesting comparison video and one I’ve been looking fwd to. In practical terms the abisko is a 1.5 person tent. So the extra 1kg weight penalty in the genuine 2 person nammatj isn’t like for like setting aside fabric weights etc. I think you have summed up the durability comparison perfectly by the use of percentages on the fabric deniers. Personally I’d never want lower denier than 70 on the groundsheet and 30 on the fly on a true 4 season tent. Lighter weight fabrics will give lighter weight tents, but the pay off is reduced fabric strength and durability - not something I’d want to risk in adverse conditions. Bye bye abisko. Hello Nallo 2 🤣

    Cheers Tom, another good review. I think it proves my point you need quality material and unfortunately, the Abisco Light 2 doesn't match the Hilleberge. It's got some cracking features and loads of space but that stress mark on the fly puts me right off this tent. I have the Akto and it does the job for me, just enough space without any extra. Great content and comparisons. The only 1-person specification-wise tent is AKTO. That said... often the more optimal 1-person tents are 'realistically' 2-person specifications (1+ spec) into something like the Nammatj 2. All things and features considered... the main reason I would not pull trigger on the Nammatj 2 is that it lacks two-doors & two vestibules. I would not select the Fjallraven at all unless it was had for a significantly discounted price. For the longer duration, true 4-season demands... AKTO is just a little too small, but it ticks nearly all the rest of the boxes.

At the very least your experiance would test their level of customer service and you could do a follow up video. I am no expert but as you said the fault is at a stress point and clearly not user damage. Credit to you for not calling the Abisko, after just three high winds camps. While the Enan has a single but longer pole it creates more height at the ends but the single pole in the middle I dont think is as stable as the two and that's why the design of the Akto has been kept the same as a four season tent.... Other than availability of parts here in the United States, the one key difference that made me buy the Hilleberg Nammatj over the Fjallraven Abisko Lite was that it uses identical poles for the front and rear. I carry one extra set of poles, and therefore I can use that to replace either the front or rear poles or double pole either the front or the rear (depends on wind direction).

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thank you for your comments... For me too I agree.. My Akto pole is the same length as the Nammatj 2 so I bring it when I expect it to be over 50MPH winds and double pole the wind ward end. Although the shorter pole definitely reduces weight and gives the tent a better aerodynamic profile it definitely reduces a lot of internal volume and makes things more complicated if you want to double pole. If double polling then you really need the fabrics to be super strong and while its feature on the Abisko Lite 2 here if done regularly it will sacrifice the durability of the tent long term IMO... Tom, great comparison - I have a few questions...
    1) Given the issues you had with the Fjallraven and the fact you've now let it go - would you still recommend it as an all around 4 season tent for this sort of "1.5 man" sizing
    2) Have you tried the Wild Country Helm Compact 2? Quite a few folk describe it as offering that sort of 80:20 performance:price of the Hilleberg Akto/Soulo and given that it does look cracking. I'm in Scotland and frankly I've never had the confidence to do a summit or near summit camp so I'm wondering if this could meet the bill or if I'll have to go for the big guns?
    Cheers!

      Hi Jonathan thank you for your questions.. The Abisko Lite 2 here is a decent 4 Season tent offering strong wind performance light weight and very spacious for 1. I definitely subjected it to high winds and it did very well.. I feel though that being so light weight for its strength it suffers a bit durability wise from my experience.. I am very familiar with this type of tent and very careful too but still mine got damaged.. Accidental damage happens very easily to this type of tent.. It is however a premium well featured tent.. The Wild Country Helm Compact is more of a budget friendly tent as there is a massive difference in price here. It may be strong enough for your usage demands and I suspect definitely more durable due to heavier more robust fabric selection.. It's the safe bet here unless you want to go to the middle ground for something like the Terra Nova Northern Lite 2 I think.. It still uses very light fabric to keep the weight down so it's a tough one. I would expect however Terra Nova customer service to be better and if it gets damaged Terra Nova themselves could repair it not like Fjallraven where they will send you to a third party or suggest you do it yourself.. I hope that this was helpful.. All the very best and I would be interested to hear what you decide on.. Tom

    I've had an Akto for nearly 20 years. I've always laid in the Akto with my feet at the other end from you,likewise sitting in the vestibule. I sleep on my side and seem to cook ,eat etc. In the 'Roman' position with wide access through the inner door. When I roll the fly door I use a short elastic guy from bottom corner of the door to a small stake peg keeping the roll out of the way. The metal zip pulls were replaced by yellow line loops years ago, no pulling problems.

    Excellent review and comparison! Very informative. Thank you!
    I would like to point out one thing though.
    When you compared the material of the Fjallraven Abisko to the Hilleberg Nammatj I feel it was a little bit unfair.
    The Nammatj is a “black label” tent in the Hilleberg lineup. That is a top of the top. It should be compared to the Fjallraven Keb Endurance 2 in my opinion.
    The Abisko Lite 2 would be a fairer comparison to the Hilleberg Nallo 2.

      Hey that's a great comment and observation.. You are 100 percent right regarding the ideal world comparison between a Keb Endurance and the Nammatj.. My problem is that I can't just source the ideal line up of tents and have to work with what I can.. So all 3 of these tents were bought and paid for by myself and used and reviewed by me regarding their suitability for single person use...The Abisko here also uses 40d fabric like the Nammatj but just in theory where its needed, not all over the fly.. I have contacted Fjallraven regarding sponsorship of a tent for review but they won't reply...
      I have extensively used all three of these tents so the intention was to demonstrate and explain the difference... Many people are torn between red and black label Hilleberg and Abisko and Keb Fjallraven s.. Once again thank you for the comment and feedback.. best wishes Tom

    There's another option for tunnel tents readers may be interested in depending on their situation, the Nordisk Oppland. I went with a Nordisk Oppland 2, which has a very similar design to the two tunnel tents here. The reason I went for that was because it comes in a polyester version as well as silnylon. I wanted polyester firstly because it's cheaper and the difference in weight didn't matter to me since I was buying it to use at carry-in campsites at national parks, so I'd be carrying it up to 1 km or so rather than hiking long distances with it. Also, polyester stretches less when it gets wet so requires less adjusting in the rain, and I live in Australia and polyester lasts longer under high UV conditions so it will probably be more durable for me. I found mine on sale for about a quarter the regular price of a Nammatj and it's been perfect for my needs. I love the tunnel design, it's so easy to pitch solo and the big vestibule is fantastic in wet weather. The Oppland 2 has three poles so the vestibule is similar in size to the Nammatj 2 GT (which actually weighs more). It might not handle the type of snow load a Nammatj would but that's not a concern for me. I've had it out in high winds and it was rock solid.

      Hi Jean, thank you for watching and your comment. It's great to hear other sensible recommendations with really sound rationale behind them. I have always had an eye on Nordisk tents and one of my mountain tents (American version of North Face Mountain 25)had polyester fabric and it was great. Never sagged when wet and the construction made it super strong. I think MSR have released a two person tunnel made of polyester so maybe it's going to have a comeback . Agree. Hillebergs are just burlier. Fjallravens are wonderful for less demanding use. You have to keep the Nammatj. Keep one of the others for summer, depending on whether you want strength or comfort. The Abisko is a much nicer place to rest in. But the Akto can be taken anywhere. You could also sell them both and get the Abisko Lite 1, which packs down wonderfully small. It's a slightly smaller space than the Akto though, a little too small for me, I found.

    Excellent reviews as ever from yourself for which helps people like me decide where best to spend their hard earned money to get a good return on value. I, personally I would get rid of the Fjallraven because when there is a big ? on the durability of it means at the back of your mind it could fail in a major way if a long rip of material occurs, as that would force you to return home early in the next rough weather conditions. While the Hilleberg from what I've seen in many of your reviews there is no issues with quality except certain ones are better suited for certain situations or needing to reduce weight while still maintaining quality & durability!
    It's a pity it seems like you've stated the Fjallraven has some great innovative ideas except they've seriously reduced the durability of the material by making it a costly mistake, as they've certainly chosen the wrong combination of denier material to reduce its overall weight where they shouldn't have done so. Hopefully, the makers of Fjallraven will take onboard your observation on guy rope lines and durability of material hopefully they will come out with an updated version of it.

Don't intend to use intentionally is crazy wind but to withstand if it happens as it can at any time in the peaks and lakes. 3kg is to heavy and the smaller hilliberg is to small and coffin like for my liking. I have one real 4-season that I hardly ever used but it's excellent for above treeline high wind conditions (or car camping where weight and size doesn't matter). I've no problem though seeing that 4-season tents are useful or even necessary for people who want to camp on mountain tops in Scotland and other places with high wind. For everything else I've found that 3-season or even 2-season tents works well as long as I can find a sheltered camp site.

    Sell the Fjallraven. Nammatj2 is the best tent you need for one person hiking use in your climate. Keep Akto if you definitely need very light tent to take with you just in case you need a shelter. I’ve Nammatj 2 myself and sold my Halti ultralight tunnel one person and one other 2 person tent - mainly because Nammatj has so much better ventilation. Hi thank you for the comment and I definitely get your point... This video was about 3 tents that I had owned and I am also comparing an Akto here which is also not Hillebergs strongest range of tents.. I understand too in that what you call extreme varies from person to person.. For example here in Northern Ireland at elevations of only 400m we regularly get winds over 50mph pretty much every week in the winter. So for me 40 to 50mph winds which was the highest I measured using this tent thats not extreme. The tent also has the facility to double pole and surely this then suggests that it can handle occasional extreme conditions.... I do get your point though and thank you for the comment... best wishes Tom

    Another highly informative and interesting analysis. Did you contact Fjallraven about the issue and if so what was their customer service like? Last year I was looking for a sturdy 2 person (though I use it as a single) and very attracted to the Nammatj but as I live rural Tasmania could not get my hands on one to inspect. Also, I was dubious about the weight as I was replacing an original 3.6kg Macpac Olympus (brilliant) and wanted significantly lighter so that sealed it. I ended up with a very curious sub-2kg which, I am assured, can take a severe beating - my friend's survived a number of massive New Zealand mountain storms while other tents were failing. And yet it's also excellent in tropical climates - so it is indeed odd but so far performing well. Very versatile. A small Western Australian brand, Wilderness Equipment Second Arrow. I'd love if you could subject it to your assessment but alas.

    I remember that my biggest dilemma was if I should buy a Hilleberg Akto, or an Abisko lite 1. Although, I have the Akto now, I'd love to see a comparison on these 2 tents, because they are almost identical. Can you somehow borrow an Abisko lite 1 for a comparison?
    And something else:
    Ultralight trekking pole tents are more and more popular. I've never tried any but I don't feel like I could trust then in extreme conditions. I'd love to see a comparison on the Akto (or any other Hilleberg) and a trekking pole tent like the Lanshan in windy, possibly extreme windy conditions. Is it actually worth to carry the extra weight? Is it really more safe and more stable? I've never seen a side by side comparison and I'd love to see one.

Ok very soon I will take both my Lanshan 2 pro out with the Akto for some wind testing. Thank you for the idea... ATB Tom

    Hi Tom many thanks for the excellent reviews. I am after a Hilleberg for solo bikepacking but unfortunately I am 6ft 3” tall and with a large frame, and hate having the tent inner flapping directly in my face. Hi... yeah so many different opinions.. The Kaitum 2 will have insane length due to its vertical walls and less flapping as 3 poles instead of 2 supporting the structure...BUT large pack size.... The Tarp Tent Scarp 1 or 2 are worth a consideration as light and substantially higher and wider at the ends (vertical ends giving good length) than an Akto.. Very light on the inner fabric and tent floor though but this helps pack size but the long rods at either end then make for a pack that's long and thin if you know what I mean... Never an easy answer I am afraid ... I hope that this helps. nest wishes Tom

      Hi Matt, thank you for your comments. Vango make an expensive tent too you know.. The F10 Neon UL 1 www.vango.co.uk/gb/camping-equipment/1329-f10-neon-ul-1.html.... £535 for a one person tent... Once you try to combine light weight with strength then the money goes up with most of the brands. I have also tested a Vango Banshee 300, and 3FUL Lanshan 2 which are cheaper tents so my channel is not just limited to expensive ones... If you were into cycling then a top end bike is 10k compared to the price of a top end tent so I am lucky that tents are my thing. Personally my type of camping preference is on summits in exposed conditions as other locations are now getting over used. Due to my age I also need the tent to be light as well as strong and this is when they get expensive. But when my safety depends on it then its worth it for me... Thank you for your thoughts as all are welcome... ATB and happy camping... Tom

      Yes you are right. I sold both the Abisko and Nammatj and bought a Jannu.. The Abisko got sold due to the fault I had with it and the Nammatj due to it being very flappy and drafty in high winds.. Having used the Jannu now for about 5 camps in varied harsh conditions it's definitely my new favourite.. I still have the Akto as Jannu and Akto are very different but if I can manage the extra weight I will carry the Jannu every time.. The taught inner makes it very comfortable in high winds and it has fantastic space for one person. I hope that helps.. It was only when I saw the Jannu and Nammatj side by side in 40mph winds that I appreciated how much more stable and comfortable it was... Best wishes and thank you for your comments... Tom

    My instincts said N. Ireland would break the 20d on the Abisko!
    20d is 20d. I honestly would still consider the Fjallraven Abisko if you can plan to be behind wind breaks. But if high wind open space camping will be a requirement, stay away from the 20d.

      Hey Matt are you calling me Ireland???? ha ha Well I gave it a chance and am always open to trying new things and brands with gear... Yr right 20d textile is 20d textile and no matter what the manufactures say it's as simple as that. There just has to be a hit on durability. I would have not expected a problem so early in the tents use though and any 4 season tent should take 50mph winds for many many camps before taking fabric stress damage IMO... I have already got a buyer and its going soon although I may give Fjallraven a chance to respond...ATB and thank you for watching and your comment and continued support of my channel Tom. Hey Tom - so I was leaning towards the Fjallraven - what did you decide in the end I wonder. That wee fault - did it get worse and importantly was it replicated on the other sides or just in the one spot (I'm wondering if it was there from the beginning,perhaps a manufacturing fault?)

    Hallo Tom, thank you for your review! It seems the Abisko 2 is an exact copy of the Hilleberg Anjan 2 - or maybe the other way round? I was disappointed to see the tear in the Abisko, I have had my eyes on this tent for a while now. Though I would use it for cycling-touring in less hefty conditions. I would opt for the Hilleberg Anjan 2 version anyday, but the one issue i have with Hilleberg tents in general is their long poles at 45cm, its impossible to pack these in my cycling panniers. So it looks I am going to have to take my chances with the Abisko 2. ATB, Gerlach Sven.

      Hey great to hear from you and your thoughts 💭💭. Both pretty good tents.. You might be able to source DAC poles with the same length but shorter sections... I totally agree with what you are saying and it's a pity.. The Anjan also has a little more room if that means anything. Hilleberg will have some reason why the pole sections are longer longer .. either a strength one or two control costs as they already do this by having the same pole lengths on many different tents. I am sure they would give you an answer if you thought it was worth contacting them.. I hope you get sorted.. Best wishes Tom
