Why we shouldn't dress to fit in | Amanda Jefferson | TEDxRutgersCamden

  • We wear the black blazer for the work event. The white dress for the wedding. The high heels to look taller and maybe … smaller. We do it to fit in, to feel professional, to follow tradition, to not ruffle any feathers. Because THEY say we should.
But … who IS THEY? And why are we following their rules?
Our closets are time capsules of these rules. It’s time to stop blindly following THEIR rules and to start making our own. Let’s ruffle some feathers, shall we? After 20 years of trying to keep up with the “shoulds,” Amanda left it all behind to help others learn how to listen to themselves. She's the owner of Indigo Organizing, the creator of the Organized Every Day™ online course, and one of the world's first KonMari consultants. A keynote speaker and co-host of the Good Enough-Ish podcast, Amanda has been featured in Real Simple, Harpers Bazaar UK and Better Homes & Garden, among others. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Was literally thinking about a list in my head of “essentials,” and now I’m seeing it in a different way. It really should be more of what you want, so follow your heart, as I say ❤

Take a moment now to sense whether you are carrying any guilt associated with the habits you are trying to cultivate. Oftentimes people beat themselves up for their stops and starts, or not achieving things fast enough.
Take a deep breath and realize there is no need for misplaced anger any longer. Here in Fabulous, there is no self-loathing, no bad grades. Everyone goes at their own pace, taking tiny steps and celebrating each one.

For my first wedding, I wore the white bridal gown. But for my second wedding, I wore a sparkling blue gown. Because I loved it.
I look at pictures and I like how I look in my second wedding better!

OMG - Yasssss. This. I wore sneakers with a dress to the office today. It felt/feels ridiculously freeing. And the bridal white thing - dear god. I wore blue. My mother had a meltdown. But I felt glorious and different. Like a Queen. I worked for big pharma a while back and the dress rules for women were ridiculous - no pants, always pantyhose, matching jacket and skirt, hair above the collar or worn up. Women need to rebel against this rubbish. Do what feels good to you. You will feel more powerful, more yourself, if you're comfortable. Thanks for the challenge Amanda.

Great talk on a very relevant topic. It's very difficult to breakout of the mindset engrained by previous generations. I can safely say I will never ever go back to heels!

YES! We all do better if we take the time to understand why we do what we do, why we wear what we wear, and then make our choices. Nice food for thought.

I love high heels and I wish I wanted to get married just so I could wear a white dress and have a three-tiered wedding cake in my honor LOL. What I detest are sneakers , big baggy sweatshirts and those big clunky and gaudy colored clogs with holes in them that aren't even that practical .

It's not a time of great upheaval in our society it happens every decade. In London in 1962 "WINKLE PICKER" was buried. The high heel pointy toe shoe.
It was buried at a ceremony because it was crippling us.
    Now it's being worn again.

So what you’re saying is, Question authority? though I didn’t and I got somewhere. I fit in well when I was young. Now you shouldn’t.
I’m a little confused as to what the messages here. That neither of you had sense enough to see if the blazer fit her or was cut right?
There’s a lot of ways to make a blazer. There’s a lot of people who wear dark gray or dark blue or something like that.
You seem like a nice person not much to say. Do you do sales?

Is this more rhetoric to undermine the Western World Clothing gives a certain impression. Why does a Lumberjack rip the sleeves off his shirts and wear Nicks Boots if they can afford them. Clothing can be a leveller look at school uniform. Look at the Arabic Dress 1400+ years after Muhammad they are still wearing it as a leveller like going swimming with a swimming costume you pretty much have no idea on the status of another individual. Fitting in!
Whist other cultures embrace their clothing music etc. We have to applaud theirs and think that ours is wrong.
