  • Beet Pulp for Dairy Cattle - In this weeks video we are stockpiling dry and wet beet pulp. The beet processing season typically ends late April/early May; stockpiling the pulp allows us to continue to feed beet pulp throughout the summer when it's not available.
    If you have any questions about this week's video, leave them in the comments, and I will post a Q&A video on Sunday if needed. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Piet, as usual, great video, great content. Very instructif. Nice to see some action too! Your videos are enjoyable as you don‘t expose your daily portion of breakdowns and misery as other farmer channels often do too much! Keep going and many blessings to your family!

    Thanks for your earlier response to my question about the odor in the manure shed. I am amazed that you feed beet pulp. I am not up-to-speed on beet processing to sugar, but your comments about pelletizing the pulp caused me to look those up and it shows it is a popular horse feed. I am learning a lot from you. THANKS!

    Hey there Piet, I hope you're all well and good!
    It's interesting how the different byproducts in different regions are fed to dairy cows.
    There in ND you're feeding beet pulp, and here in the Southeast, we feed cottonseed.
    As you well know, a cow will eat just about anything they can get in their mouth, and with their digestive system, they can utilize just about anything.
    Cows in CA get the largest variety of byproducts as feed, due to so many different fruits and vegetables being grown there, like almonds for instance.
    Your videos are very informative, and quite detailed, which is what I like, so keep up the good work! 👍
    I hope y'all have a good one!

      It is amazing how many different types of feed a cow can utilize and turn into milk!

      Yes it is, and in times past, they were fed some questionable ingredients.
      Thanks for the reply! 👍

    Good morning! Thanks for the video. Back in the 40s and 50s I grew up next to a dairy farm in Butler County, Ohio. It was a registered Holstein heard and said to be the largest in South Western Ohio and it seems strange to say this now, but the milked 42 cows in a stanchion barn. I remember the old cold water cooler and the 10 gallon milk cans. They later put in a small bulk tank, but ya still carried the milk to the milk house. I remember they, at some point, brought in bags of dries beet pulp and would put it in a metal cart to soak with water and and it on top of the ground feed. I had never seen that before and forgot until you reminded me.

    Hey Piet, Greetings from the Netherlands. I think it is a good idea to use an agbag for those beet pulp. Maybe you can mixx with the the dry stuf. 75% dry beet and 25% wet beet and then bale it. It will be less wett. Try a couple with a bale first before you use a agbag

      Putting it in a pile like we are is preffered because it's easy to feed out and we don't have to worry about the plastic. It's working well with dry and wet pulp together in a pile. With wet pulp by itself being difficult to pack an agbag could be a good option for us to try.

    I really enjoy watching your videos very informative. One question how much of that beet pulp do you feed and does it make it better being covered to make it better feed

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're currently feeding about 15lbs per milking cow per day. It will ferment some when covered in a pile, but I'm not sure how much the feed value is improved through fermentation.

    Thanks Piet. Have you used a wheel tractor to pack those piles? Better compaction. Enjoy your videos

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have in the past, but a tractor can be too heavy to pack the wet pulp on a pile like this. It can just push it sideways instead of packing it.

    Hallo Piet. Gebruiken jullie ook wel eens bierbostel, aardappelsnippers, luzerne en zo? Misschien kan je iets vertellen over wat jouw voorkeur heeft qua voer en waarom? Want de voermogelijkheden worden vaak beperkt door de beschikbaarheid / omgeving. Love your videos!

      Wij voeren geen bierbostel en aardappelsnippers maar wel anderen by producten. Ik zal hier wat over praten zondag!

    Ag bags work best for us beacuse we only feed 1 ton/day. A tractor with a packer is included when deliveries take place, so all we need to do is cover the end of the bags.
    Ag bags are 300 SEK more expensive 2,550 / ton about $275 ton The price depends on how far away also in our case 4 hours

      That's very convenient! Our closest plant is about 1.5 hours away, but most of our loads this year have come from plants about 2 hours away.

    Hello what is your cost on dry and wet pulp? Live in Wi. sure love feeding it but trucking kills!

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wet pulp is currently $10/ton plus trucking. The dry pulp I purchased delivered in the yard for $110/ton, I'm not sure what the price is for the dry pulp itself, this is delivered by another trucking company.

    Can't they dump that wet pulp right out of the truck into a bag like they do with wet brewers grains. It could be stored effectively for a much longer time.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've never stored it in an agbag, but I'm assuming that would be possible. I prefer to have it a pile because it's easier to feed out that way, but storing wet pulp by itself in an agbag would be something for us to try in the future. I'm not worried about long term storage in a pile as long as we do a good job covering the piles. We shouldn't have any issues feeding from these piles throughout the summer until the next processing season starts.
