10 years in the service industry, one day I was bartending alone in my restaurant. Only one lady came in for lunch so I was prepping for the night and chatted with her for a while. We both learned we had identical gray cats, I had mentioned my cat was going through medical issues and she had just put hers down. Her bill was $10 and she left me $510 in total. Didn’t stay to watch me pick it up, and just wrote “vet bills ❤” on the receipt. I wrote a thank you note with my cats paw print and kept it in there in case I ever saw her again, but never did.
I spent my 23rd bday alone, shopping in a mall, and went into Jack Astors alone for dinner. The server asked me if I was celebrating anything and I mentioned it was my birthday. Every server there stopped by at some point throughout the meal to say happy birthday, they comped my drinks and my dessert, and they were all so kind and considerate I cried in my car after because of how appreciative I was. I left a 100%+ tip based on what they did charge me for, and that was my favorite restaurant until they closed during covid. All service staff should be appreciated!!!!
the same thing happened with me for my 23rd birthday!! the server checked my id and then gave me free shots and everyone said happy birthday to me & it was written on my receipt :) my bill was like $13 & i tipped them $23 bc that's how old i was turning lol that was 4 years ago and I think about it often

During the pandemic my roommate and I ordered pizza from a local spot we loved. In the order notes, we asked if they had time to do it to make a pentagram with the pepperoni because we wanted to summon pizza demons. They called and apologized it would be a eay longer wait. They were short staffed and the order took a while. We told them it was alright and Tha KS for the heads up. I completely forgot the note but when I met the delivery guy downstairs to get the pizza, he had this HUGE grin on his face. He opened the box to show me the pentagram. He looked so happy and so proud and it made our night. They even left a note on the box saying good luck with the pizza demons.
That's amazing. One time I ordered a pizza and asked for a drawing of a piglet in the mud and he misread the note and drew a Diglett playing in the mud. Best pizza delivery guy ever. I had him wait while I ran through the house finding more to tip
I gave a cashier my number as I was leaving a gas station once. We'd interacted multiple times over multiple visits to that location and there was a good vibe and banter. I asked him if he was single while he was ringing me up, and he jokingly said "Yeah, why you trying to make me sad?" and I laughed and said "No, I just wanted to give you my number." and he said "Omg thank you!" and I quickly said "You don't have to use it! Have a good day!" and left quickly as they were busy. He texted me after he finished his shift that night. That was in May of 2022. We got married in August. :) 💕

30 years old going on... idk, 14? My older niece is 14 and can be on the 'easily embarrassed by the existence of family members' end of things at times, but I think she's still good with us singing the birthday song for her, publicly or not. Get over yourself and grow up, lady.
As a Hungarian woman my cultural food is very important to me. I love to share it with my friends and partners and I’d honestly be fine if someone asked for ranch to go with it, but being rude, snarky, dismissive about it and calling the restaurant “not a normal restaurant” would absolutely break my heart.
@@station12a not a Hungarian here but a Polish, in case you want to try something Hungarian I would personally go with a classic goulash. It's originally a Hungarian dish but my mom used to make it too and I loved eating it when I was younger 💜 it's a soup/stew situation with delicious veggies and some meat. The way my mom made it was with a lot of tomatoes, bell peppers and different spices including paprika. You can eat it just by itself, or add pasta, or pour it over rice and it's also great.
That "normal restaurant" comment got under my skin. It *is* a normal restaurant! If they don't serve American-style salad, they are not going to have ranch dressing!
The last story really got to me. I used to work at Pizza Hut and they asked for us to draw a dinosaur on the box. We took it as our mission to make it the best dinosaur eating a pizza. Later they called to say thank you as it was to cheer up their son who had been sick for a while. So nice to hear it brightened their day even a little bit
This actually happened to me when I worked at Pizza Hut to! I had to ask another coworker to help since I can’t draw and she ended up trying don’t know if she was able to since I didn’t see the finished work.
Last year, I was dating an abusive guy and whenever he drank, he was a lot more mean and aggressive. When we got into a fight at a restaurant, he was saying really vulgar things at me to the point that people next to us were very uncomfortable. He said one thing and as our waitress walked away, her face was shocked. after that moment, every waitress came up to us every few *more* minutes to check up on us. I realize now they were making sure i was safe. shoutout to these ladies! i also left him a couple months after that.
Worked at dunkins for a long time and a regular customer started transitioning and once I noticed they changed her name I referred to her as miss and she started crying and thanking me because I was the first person to acknowledge her as such and I still think of her on a regular basis
Similar story, I worked at a craft store with memberships and when asking a person if they wanted to sign up, they very reluctantly gave a feminine name. After a bit I asked if they were a student with an ID in hopes that their preferred name was on it. Luckily it was! So I asked them if they'd like to change the membership name to the more masculine name and they looked sooo relieved. When they left their friend mouthed "thank you" to me. I still think about that regularly and hope they are doing well. Never saw them again after that

maybe it was her first time going out to a restaurant that's not a typical chain restaurant. i think some people just don't get a lot of exposure to other cultures. she might have been used to things like ranch, ketchup, etc being available everywhere and assumed it was universal
I have a wholesome restaurant story from the customer's point of view. I had been getting a big breakfast several mornings a week at a neighborhood restaurant that specialized in egg scrambles. Buttery, creamy, dreamy egg scrambles. I always tipped well and never caused a hassle, but it didn't occur to me that they even knew who I was. Then I suddenly completely lost my appetite for a few days. I was struggling to eat anything solid, it was bizarre and worrying. I decided to get my favorite egg scramble at my favorite breakfast spot, thinking that surely I would be tempted to eat it. I took one bite and just couldn't eat any more of it. I was sitting there, probably looking dejected, and my server came over and asked if there was anything wrong with my meal. I started crying and said that it was as delicious as always, I just hadn't been able to eat for a few days, and apparently couldn't even eat my favorite thing. I apologized for offending the kitchen and began to pay for my meal and leave. My server insisted it was on the house, because I was a good customer and she could see that I was having a hard time. She then asked if there was anything I thought I could eat. I said hot chocolate would probably work, but as it wasn't on their menu I would have to go find some or maybe make it at home. She said she'd see what she could do, and came out of the kitchen with a perfect hot chocolate. When I managed to drink the first cup she brought me another one, and when I tried to pay she again told me it was on the house. At the time, I was struggling with very low self esteem. I thought the only memorable and valuable thing about me was my accomplishments, and felt pretty invisible otherwise. This act of pure kindness and caring made a big impact on how I felt about myself. I of course left a large cash tip, and I think some hugs were exchanged as well. I moved out of state several months later, and I wish I had been able to bring that restaurant with me.

I’m newly in the healthcare field and I don’t celebrate holidays so I don’t mind working every holiday shift and I decided to sit down and eat with a patient in the hospital I had to visit for daily tests who didn’t have any family visiting her and she started sobbing with appreciation and that’s when I knew I loved my job is making a connection like that with someone 🥹
The last story got me. I worked at a steakhouse for years and I will never forget this young fellow. Showed up for his 8th birthday with mom, dad and little sister who was about 5 in a blazer and bootie. The most genuinely sweet, polite and very interactive child I've ever served. We'd offer free dessert for birthdays and when I told this genuine gentleman he had the pick of the menu he says, "I love your cheesecake but my little sister really loves chocolate and I want to share so I will take the brownie Sunday, thank you." Loved this guy, told his parents that they are raising a true man and then told him that he is one of the most chivalrous, kind and polite people I ever served. Never change Evan...never change.
This reminds me of a story. Over the summer, I worked in the kitchen of a summer camp, and one day, a camper asked to see the chef, so we all assumed that either they were being annoying or they had some kind of allergens so they wanted to make sure they could eat the food. But, when the cook came out and talked to them, they just said "I wanted to tell you that I loved the spaghetti and meatballs", which really made the chef's day. Children are the best!

Something like this happened to me when I was a kid, my brother (also named Evan lol go figure) decided to get a dessert that I liked at his birthday dinner because he knew I was a picky kid and would only eat chocolate desserts lol
Im an autistic person and unfamiliar foods are REALLY hard for me. I have involuntary gagging reactions which are especially hard because I have a phobia of getting sick. But I would NEVER go out and buy something to bring back and add to a meal I got at a restaurant! I’m open about my food struggles with my partner so we go to places that serve my “safe” foods and I try new things at home where he doesn’t shame my reactions if they occur.
I was thinking about this situation too. But I think if someone DID need ranch, they should bring a little bottle with them everywhere or sachets of sauce. Cause leaving in the middle of hanging out is a no go. Plus, I would absolutely think my date was leaving early if they got up and left like she did💀😅

It's possible to be too loud though. Not every patron is there to celebrate that birthday. There is literally no restaurant around here anymore that offers a quiet date night option.

I was honestly so shocked with the fiancé and five year old story. He just turned 5, which means he doesn’t go to elementary school yet, which is why the dad has to “have him around all the time”. This dad clearly loves his son a lot, puts in time and effort, and maybe has some problems with his ex and therefore keeps the kid close to him. The fiancé clearly doesn’t understand that they too have to put in effort to bond with this child if they want to be with the dad. It’s a 2 for 1 package. You cannot love one and reject the other. Jesus. I’ve worked with kids for so long, I can guarantee that dad singing happy birthday in that restaurant for him was a core memory. Edit: The discourse about whether the 5 year old is in school yet. I’m assuming this takes place in the US, and some states you have to be 5 or close to turning 5 before going into Kindergarten. If you’re younger like 3-4, you can go into preschool but I’m pretty sure they only do half days for them. Maybe that’s just regional as well. 🤷 Regardless I assume this kid is around a lot anyways from what OP said.
This sounds 100% like someone not prepared to take on the role of step parent. It really sounds like they think they can just be with the father and not really have anything to do with the kid, but that isn't how it works and that isn't fair to either the father or the child. Sometimes, you can love someone all you want, but love alone isn't enough, it can just not work. Sounds like this just won't work.
it made me feel so, so sad to ponder what this woman's upbringing was like. why does she view children as embarrassments? why does she think children need to be restrained in public? who taught her that children, and being a child, is shameful? probably her own parents or guardians.. that makes me feel sad. she also needs to work on that ish, immediately. her potential or actual upbringing trauma does Not excuse how awful she was. that poor boy. i hope the dad realizes how much more his son matters than this woman.
My mom was a server when I was little, so I know how hard they work. I tip well, but I watch them to see if they are actually swamped or if they aren’t doing their job. But I had this server once who I gave a massive tip to. See we had 5 kids at our table, kids are messy and a pain sometimes. He handled it with such grace, didn’t get visibly upset and was on top of making sure the little ones had the crayons, drinks and other things they needed to make our dining experience as easy as possible with 5 kids. So I walked up after our meal, tipped him roughly 65%. He tried to deny the tip, as it was obviously a hefty one. But I looked him in the eye and said no, this is because you were amazing. You deserve it. Made the poor guy tear up.

One time, me and my family went to Olive Garden. Our waiter was this high school kid with great energy but we could tell he was a little nervous. When we got our salad as an appitizer, another waiter told us that it was his first week working there. My mom was a server for many years so she (and me and the rest of my family) had so much sympathy for him. He did a great job throughout the meal. At the end of the meal before we left, my dad gave him an $100 tip. I gave it to him and the look on his face made me so happy. He was so grateful! Everyone won that night. The waiter got some money and my family and I left full and happy to have helped someone. It doesn't take a lot to be kind :)
Well, you say it doesn't take a lot to be kind, but personally I wouldn't be able to afford to give $100 US in kindness. You gotta be well-off to dish out that much.

Before my sister was diagnosed with cancer, she was obsessed with chalky textured and flavored things. Actual Chalk, talc powder, smarties, tums, food or not, you name it, she craved it like an obsession and needed something chalky with all her during all meals. Her body needed “chalk” so bad her cognitive function was more focused that than her social awareness. We later found out that she was deathly anemic bc she had an unstable cancer in her colon bleeding out for months. The anemia made her body focus on survival by developing pica. She stopped craving chalk after her blood count became balanced thru blood transfusions. She’s also in remission now.
I was a manager at a Loves Truck stop for 4 years. The number of truckers that would come in wearing a wedding ring and ask me to "join them in the showers" was astounding. When I obviously said no, they complained to my district manager. Also, when creepy customers stay at your counter and talk, you were basically held hostage. They knew you couldn't just walk away from them.
I used to work at a trampoline park as a party host and front desk lead. I once had a lady come to the front desk with her children and a vase of flowers. She continued to explain to me how one of her children Olive had passed a few years prior and every year on her birthday would give flowers to someone to hopefully brighten their day just like Olive always brightened theirs, I proceeded to go in the back and cry. I also had an extremely stressed out mom come early to set up for her child's birthday. My manager who scheduled the party put them in the wrong room and it just seemed like nothing was going in this moms favor, so I turned to the mom and told her "We're gonna figure this out, and your child is gonna have a great birthday." She then broke down in tears and I gave her a hug. She was the sweetest mom that truly just wanted the best for her kid. We got the room figured out and everyone had a great time. I'd continuously check in and praise the mom for the decorations and point out how much fun the kids were having, hoping to ease her anxiety. The party was kind, and even picked up after themselves. The mom was upset at the end of the party because she only brought $20 for a tip (which I'd say was the average left for any of the party hosts) and I honestly could've cared less because of how kind she was. Sorry for the long comment lol
I love that last story. It’s so sweet. Those wholesome moments like that… you never forget them. One Valentine’s Day, I was working the evening shift at my job at “Bread Bread Café” because I was single af and offered to work that night if they needed to give anyone else the night off. It’s not a particularly busy night for chains like that; everyone is at nice, full-service restaurants so I was on my own behind the register. A mother with her 7ish year-old son came up to the front to place their order. I commented on his really cool Yoda shirt that he was wearing. His eyes got wide and he said, “Really?” And I was like, “Yeah, really! Yoda is so cool!” The kid then proceeds to excitedly start lifting his shirt and goes, “Well! Um, well! I have… another shirt on…” to his mother’s embarrassment. I just laughed and said, “It’s okay,” as he revealed a second, secret shirt he was wearing with Spider-Man on it underneath the Yoda shirt. I told him that Spider-Man was also really cool and he was like, “Yeah,” in that cute way kids do when they’re done talking. The mom paid for their meals and went to go pick up their food. It was the best Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had. 😂
I 1000% agree. I would deliver to a lot of camps during the summer. The tips were usually pretty bad, but the children treating me like an angel coming down to bless them with pizza made it worth it.

I was a delivery driver for 4 years and i dreaded it lmao. Im at my job trying to make money and if you were handing the pizza over to kids the probability of a tip was abysmal. I also know parents would purposefully make their kids answer the door so they wouldn’t have to tip.
I eventually got to the point when I'd tell creepy customers I was married because they would take "I have a boyfriend" as a challenge. It's so shitty how so many people have been treated this way.

On my daughters 8th birthday this year she could sense things haven't been going well financially and never asked for anything outrageous, just something simple and I managed to scrounge up enough to add a couple pizzas from a popular pizza joint. I asked them to write Happy 8th Birthday on the box and when they showed up they had added 2 desserts and every box had a note on it with a blessing on it for her. I still cry uncontrollably over it whenever I think about it. Thanked him profusely, gave an amazing review and upped the tip as much as I could and just so thankful. They just have no idea the change they made for us that day.

I had a wholesome restaurant story from the delivery service in my country - Grab. There was this story of a female student who ordered the cheapest dish on the menu every single day. One day, the restaurant made a big nutritious dish for her with a note asking if she's okay and that they wanted her to eat healthy. It turned out the student was in a bad place financially and was depressed. She's really thankful that the restaurant noticed her and sent well wishes to her.

In the "asking out the waitress" story, one thing that was missed in the convo was the employee that took over being blunt about why she wasn't clearing the table. They very well could've made up an excuse, like they rearranged who was waiting which table, or that she had to leave, just anything. Saves the waitress from potentially dangerous situations
True, but I also don’t think that the op was an asshole for asking her out while on the clock especially if he was nice about it. And he has the right to feel bad or embarrassed about the rejection he just shouldn’t get angry at her about it or try to push it. That’s how most people meet new people anyway
My favorite memory was this lady that was breastfeeding but her baby had severe allergies to a lot of foods so she was worried about eating certain foods. I went through every menu item and we went through trying to figure out what she could eat that would not cause issues for the baby. She ended up writing me a hand written note and mailing it to the restraunt and I cried so hard when I read it. It's been years and I still have that letter.
About the first story - my gf has epilepsy and there is no proof that caffeine causes seizures, although some say it makes their epilepsy worse. But if it was, the logical thing would just be to… stop drinking coffee? Or have decaf? My gf has caffeine all the time (she literally keeps a huge bottle of Coca Cola in her room) and it doesn’t make her seizures worse. If it did, she’d give it up, just like she has with taking baths and swimming. This is just someone who wants to cause trouble
I have epilepsy too and caffeine does make my epilepsy worse (or at least more prominent) and I try to regulate my caffeine intake, no coffees everyday or not many energy drinks. and if I already feel like it is a worse day, I definitely would not risk drinking a coffee

@@mariharris5693 One that sticks to me the most was this one time a woman came to stay at our BNB and after she checked in, she started lugging all these boxes up as if she's moving in. My manager, "R" was concerned about this and went to politely talk to her and see what was up. At that point, this woman started SCREAMING at "R" telling her it's none of her business and she paid to stay there yada yada. My manager was a bit new to the position at the time, so being very flustered, she YELLED BACK telling her she cannot stay there with that kind of behavior, basically told her to get off the property asap or she will call the cops (let me also add that our bed n breakfast is a really beautiful Victorian mansion next to the ocean with older couples and newly weds who pay $300-$500 a night here so in my opinion, this woman was being a very big nuisance) .... Fast forward a couple hours after she "moved out' and the cops actually end up picking her up because she had broken into a big house next door by CLIMBING TO THE SECOND FLOOR AND CUTTING THEIR WINDOW SCREEN OPEN! Basically we had found that this woman had just lost her house and was not doing well mentally. This happened about 4 years ago so I hope she is doing well now and is indoors. But there are so many scary encounters within hospitality... Human sex trafficking, prostitution, and even death. I thank God that I never had to personally deal with any of those!
As an autistic person whose first safe food was hidden valley ranch because it made every food safe by being on the plate, I understand the necessity of ranch, but to go this far for ranch, even I would just rather not eat take it home and eat it at home with my ranch. Like that's it.
I think the point should be that she needs to look into if she might be neurodivergent in some way to help her cope and communicate her needs better rather than it absolving her of being rude and ignorant about the restaurant
I was a server at a buffet style food court within a grocery store. There was a man who came every Tuesday. He seemed to always have a super serious disposition, but would always thank me by name (it was on my name tag). Eventually I asked his name so I could use it to greet him each week. He started smiling more. I learned that he came every Tuesday to get food to take to have lunch with his mom that was in a nursing home. So sweet.
I SO agree about the meditation thing. I worked 2 jobs, restaurant and coffee shop while recovering from PTSD. It was extremely helpful for my recovery
Spent 8 years in the service industry and it taught me that sometimes people need a hand up and are having a bad day. It taught me that everyone deserves empathy and respect no matter what. I was a top notch server (i received recognition for my service from three restaurants) I absolutely give grace to any server that needs it, and when I was serving I had so many customers who made my day better. The moral I guess I’m trying to enforce is that we’re all human, you never know what someone is going through and a little compassion can go a long way. Even if it seems like your server is completely incompetent, please just take a moment to consider all of the variables. We’re all just people trying to make it.
My first ever boss taught me that it takes all kinds of kinds to make the world go round. You’ll encounter all different types of people and situations in a day, and that’s just the beauty of life.
For the wallet story, OP acted accordingly. The woman was purposefully taking advantage of someone else's kindness and thought nothing would happen, then she got criticized and rightfully embarrassed, she only felt upset when she was being held up to a responsibility she felt wasn't her problem. Sometimes a little public scrutiny is needed to get a point across
Im totally on Shayne's side with the "i don't want to make their day any worse or more complicated". People have it hard enough anyway, you don't know what they are going through and it doesn't hurt you to just be friendly.

Needed this today. Some way older men asked me out to drinks right around close. I said no, they checked out and left on great terms. Then they waited at the entrance of the parking lot for at least an hour. They knew I was the only one there. I don’t know if they knew how sketchy it seemed, but I took the back exit today.

yeah, unfortunately you have to pick and choose your battles in this life (as in, service industry). sometimes there are fights worth spending your energy on, sometimes you have to put on your Server Façade and move on so as to preserve your sanity.
When I was a kid, I was a very picky eater. I went to a restaurant with my mom and I didn't like most things on the menu. I asked the waiter for help to choose something. She was so sweet and nice that I asked my mom to go on their website later to compliment her great service. We received a response days later saying they threw a party for her at the restaurant so she could feel appreciated. I felt so happy but it was such a big deal for them that I remember thinking people don't often give good feedback. That's something that I try to do every time I go out. It's so easy to be a good customer... It's sad that people enjoy being assholes sometimes.

The thing about the ranch story that gets me is- I too have a weird relationship with food due to autism things (at every restaurant I go to I just get kids meal chicken nuggets and mayo), so I understand being that unwilling to try something new even if it’s “close enough”, I understand going out of your way to get something specific so you could actually eat the food you bought, but cmon…. Saying “like normal restaurants” and being rude isn’t excusable (saying “like normal restaurants” gives xenophobic vibes and that’s just super uncomfortable-), it’s really not necessary. Get the ranch (or just have your own bottle with you if you know you’re going out to eat, just in case), put it on your food, hide it in your bag so it doesn’t become an issue, and try not to make a big deal about it! Maybe say “hey I have a weird thing with food and I feel the need to put ranch on everything” if you need to explain yourself

My favorite part of being a server was getting drawings from kids. Knowing that I made a kid really happy, enough for them to want to make some art for me, felt really good. Plus, when the kids are happy, usually the parents are too. I have a little box in my closet where I saved them all. Some are genuinely pretty good!

OP said they the wife sending back meals for petty shit is something she learned from her family. *Listen to me so close.* If you are planning on spending the rest of your life with someone, and they have a relationship with their family, MEET THE FAMILY. Because you’re not just marrying the person you’re marrying their family, both in the sense of them being in your life as well as your spouse’s upbringing and how it affects them as a person. You have got to be aware of what their behavior looks like based on the family. Not everyone is like their family but most times they are in some way or another, how you are raised (or lack there of) is really influential. You’ve gotta work it out with yourself and your partner to see if that’s what you want to commit to.

For the ranch girl story, she was defiently in the wrong, BUT as someone with ARFID, i understand needing stuff in order to eat. It's really hard for me to eat most foods either due to texture or strong smells. Like, i can tell when something would taste good to everyone else, but i just know i can't eat it, so i avoid it. I also use garlic salt as my "ranch" when i need it. If this girl knew she needed ranch or that she might not like the food, she should've had stuff on hand instead of buying it or going somewhere else. Needing the ramch wasn't the asshole part. How she went about it was.
@@kaybadberg534avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, i havent been diagnosed but based on my eating patterns and accommodating mental disorders i’m 99% sure i have it. it’s extremely hard for me to try new foods on a whim or expand my palette because i have a difficult time with certain textures or scents. going out with friends to eat can be hard for me because i feel like i limit where we can go, so i typically eat something beforehand/check out the menu before we leave. with the ranch story, i can see why they would be so persistent about it but it definitely is over the line to make everything about you and your needs instead of maybe just trying out the sauce one time or being like hey maybe i’ll try to eat rn or i’ll just eat it later when i get home. ARFID is linked to autism, so it’s possible that OP missed social cues and didn’t realize that they were being impolite idek lol
The Lawry's garlic salt in my home is always empty! Garlic salt goes on or in most foods for me when I cook at home, and if I'm ever making "quick" boxed meals, I'm probably putting some Frank's red hot buffalo sauce on it... That being said, if I'm at a restaurant (especially one important to someone I'm with) I don't mess with the food and eat it as is
I agree with them, that the one improvement would have been to play dumb and, even though you absolutely know it was deliberate, play it off like you don't know and you're just trying to be super helpful. It's not uncommon for people (especially femme people) to get flak for "picking a fight" if they initiate a confrontation, even if the confrontation is "why have you been lying to bilk money out of me?" If you bring the wallet along but don't directly admit that you knew about the lie, then the sister in law has to either pay her share or be the one to start the conflict over her own wrongdoing. If your husband didn't know about the ruse, well, he has to acknowledge it now. If he knew but is too conflict-averse to call his sister on it, he's more likely to get angry with his sister than you, because not only was she the one who's been lying to get free food, she's also the one who didn't just play along to be nice.
NGL, as a former waiter/busser if I had to deal with someone like that wife with all their requests but at the end of it THEY THEMSELVES wrote out an itemized list of what each part of the tip was for, even if it wasn't like a huge tip they would literally have become my favorite customer. I wouldn't care WHAT their request was I would adore that person. It honestly would have made my day, especially if they were otherwise stressful. Not sure about the husband doing it though, amusing but yikesy. I'd appreciate it though but still.
I work as a bartender and recently I had a customer ask for a shot of a top shelf vodka (by name mind you) on the rocks with lots of ice and five slices of lemon. After making it exactly the way they asked, they told me it was not enough and asked for another shot and more ice and one more lemon. After filling their drink, I charged them for a double (because it essentially was) and they complained why it was so expensive (it was $22, which is expensive but also makes sense based on the brand and it’s price). If they didn’t want to pay so much, why ask for specifics?
Funny Chanse mentioned Thailand because my wife is Thai and always smuggles chili powder and chili oil into restaurants in the US since they never have anything hot enough for her. But, she has little travel containers that fit in her purse so nobody notices and she doesn't criticize the restaurant for her weird thing about wanting heat in her food. She's never even slightly implied that it's the restaurant that's wrong. We travel all over the world and she tries the food without it first but she's always ready with it if not. The entire issue here was how she belittled another culture for not being "normal" and rerfused to try to even step out of her little bouncy bubble of safety. But Chanse is also wrong, well made ranch should be very rich with flavor.
Agreed. I keep a small tube of salt in my bag in case i go somewhere that's unlikely to have a salt shaker (and it's come in handy more often than you'd think). Two of my friends are allergic to corn, and HFC is a common ingredient in ketchup, so they used to walk into diners carrying their own bottle. If you manage your own needs and you don't make a big production out of it, it's unlikely to cause much fuss. The issue is not in having an unusual need, it's in A. picking on the restaurant for not being immediately able to accommodate your unusual need, and B. making a big show of going out and buying the ranch, thereby leaving your date alone and throwing shade at the restaurant again. And if you don't already have your ranch with you and the restaurant can't accommodate you, well, it's not a dietary restriction, and there worse things in life than eating a meal that isn't as flavorful as you'd like.
pretty sure she said she had tried to other sauces so she def did at least TRY to step out of her comfort zone, so i think the only issues were leaving DURING the date to get the ranch and belittling another culture and not the ranch itself. i’d argue it’s fine even if she didn’t try it without the ranch before using it as long as she respects the culture.

Splitting the bill has never been an issue with my friend group because we talk about it super openly beforehand. If one of us is broke, they’ll mention it and we’ll either go somewhere less expensive or someone else might offer to pay for them. If someone wants to treat everyone, that is clear up front. As with most of these issues, communication solves the problem
as a server, this video gave me a new appreciation of my job! it’s not ideal most of the time, but when something nice happens or when someone is especially kind, it is worth it.

Agreed. Movies, books, series and any other entertainment medium tend to romanticize this type of behavior, while in real life this doesn't work out in a good way 95% of the time. In real life it only works the way Amanda explained it: very subtly (like writing the phone number and leave), without obligation and without turning it into a weird awkward situation.
Now it’s the only time people have contact with strangers. I’d guess that’s more where it comes from than TV and movies but they definitely make it worse.
My father co managed a restaurant for my entire life. He’d always come home and tell me about the people who came in, especially if he hadn’t seen them in a while. I have no idea how he remembered so many people’s names and details about them. He passed away last year and I’ve heard so many previous customer’s tell me it’s not the same without him. 🖤
The only thing wrong with Ranch Girl is how she handled it. Being dismissive of cultural cuisine, being snarky & saying it wasn't a "real" restaurant, being rude to the waiter, and not communicating food issues with her date are what make her an asshole. If she had communicated with the date, given the food a chance, and been respectful of the whole thing, I think she'd deserve the legend status Shayne initially hoped for. (And the 'normal food' but whether it's normative speaking or malicious speaking is unknown - both not great but different levels). Even traditional foods are constantly adapted to the place/people they are being served. For example plenty of popular 'Indian dishes' are actually British fusion that gets labelled as authentic by much of the world from ignorance.

I had a server in a hotel restaraunt I was at with my family. We would go there every night for dinner and every morning for breakfast. This server had a very strong french accent and he would make us laugh by saying how he must be our “favourite angry french man” which would always make my day. It was a week long holiday and he would act mean (passing us our meal then snatching it back, ruffling my hair, mocking our accent etc.) he would always make my day and was generally very kind. this was a few years ago and it still makes me smile when i think about it. just goes to show how such a small thing can make core memories.

As a chef of 10 years I felt his frustration in my bones 😂 unfortunately the way the service industry is going, most places will make cooks and servers attend to every request that guests have because they don’t want a bad yelp review and they’re more important than the employees. So the idiots get catered to. And thats why I quit 😂
10 years in the service industry, one day I was bartending alone in my restaurant. Only one lady came in for lunch so I was prepping for the night and chatted with her for a while. We both learned we had identical gray cats, I had mentioned my cat was going through medical issues and she had just put hers down. Her bill was $10 and she left me $510 in total. Didn’t stay to watch me pick it up, and just wrote “vet bills ❤” on the receipt. I wrote a thank you note with my cats paw print and kept it in there in case I ever saw her again, but never did.

I spent my 23rd bday alone, shopping in a mall, and went into Jack Astors alone for dinner. The server asked me if I was celebrating anything and I mentioned it was my birthday. Every server there stopped by at some point throughout the meal to say happy birthday, they comped my drinks and my dessert, and they were all so kind and considerate I cried in my car after because of how appreciative I was. I left a 100%+ tip based on what they did charge me for, and that was my favorite restaurant until they closed during covid. All service staff should be appreciated!!!!

During the pandemic my roommate and I ordered pizza from a local spot we loved. In the order notes, we asked if they had time to do it to make a pentagram with the pepperoni because we wanted to summon pizza demons. They called and apologized it would be a eay longer wait. They were short staffed and the order took a while. We told them it was alright and Tha KS for the heads up. I completely forgot the note but when I met the delivery guy downstairs to get the pizza, he had this HUGE grin on his face. He opened the box to show me the pentagram. He looked so happy and so proud and it made our night. They even left a note on the box saying good luck with the pizza demons.

That's amazing. One time I ordered a pizza and asked for a drawing of a piglet in the mud and he misread the note and drew a Diglett playing in the mud. Best pizza delivery guy ever. I had him wait while I ran through the house finding more to tip

I gave a cashier my number as I was leaving a gas station once. We'd interacted multiple times over multiple visits to that location and there was a good vibe and banter. I asked him if he was single while he was ringing me up, and he jokingly said "Yeah, why you trying to make me sad?" and I laughed and said "No, I just wanted to give you my number." and he said "Omg thank you!" and I quickly said "You don't have to use it! Have a good day!" and left quickly as they were busy.
He texted me after he finished his shift that night. That was in May of 2022. We got married in August. :) 💕

As a Hungarian woman my cultural food is very important to me. I love to share it with my friends and partners and I’d honestly be fine if someone asked for ranch to go with it, but being rude, snarky, dismissive about it and calling the restaurant “not a normal restaurant” would absolutely break my heart.

@@station12a not a Hungarian here but a Polish, in case you want to try something Hungarian I would personally go with a classic goulash. It's originally a Hungarian dish but my mom used to make it too and I loved eating it when I was younger 💜 it's a soup/stew situation with delicious veggies and some meat. The way my mom made it was with a lot of tomatoes, bell peppers and different spices including paprika. You can eat it just by itself, or add pasta, or pour it over rice and it's also great.
Yeah food is so deeply intertwined with the culture of the people wherever you go. Dismissing it and being rude is 100% an asshole move.

The last story really got to me. I used to work at Pizza Hut and they asked for us to draw a dinosaur on the box. We took it as our mission to make it the best dinosaur eating a pizza. Later they called to say thank you as it was to cheer up their son who had been sick for a while. So nice to hear it brightened their day even a little bit

This actually happened to me when I worked at Pizza Hut to! I had to ask another coworker to help since I can’t draw and she ended up trying don’t know if she was able to since I didn’t see the finished work.
Last year, I was dating an abusive guy and whenever he drank, he was a lot more mean and aggressive. When we got into a fight at a restaurant, he was saying really vulgar things at me to the point that people next to us were very uncomfortable. He said one thing and as our waitress walked away, her face was shocked. after that moment, every waitress came up to us every few *more* minutes to check up on us. I realize now they were making sure i was safe. shoutout to these ladies! i also left him a couple months after that.

Similar story, I worked at a craft store with memberships and when asking a person if they wanted to sign up, they very reluctantly gave a feminine name. After a bit I asked if they were a student with an ID in hopes that their preferred name was on it. Luckily it was! So I asked them if they'd like to change the membership name to the more masculine name and they looked sooo relieved. When they left their friend mouthed "thank you" to me. I still think about that regularly and hope they are doing well. Never saw them again after that

I have a wholesome restaurant story from the customer's point of view. I had been getting a big breakfast several mornings a week at a neighborhood restaurant that specialized in egg scrambles. Buttery, creamy, dreamy egg scrambles. I always tipped well and never caused a hassle, but it didn't occur to me that they even knew who I was.
Then I suddenly completely lost my appetite for a few days. I was struggling to eat anything solid, it was bizarre and worrying. I decided to get my favorite egg scramble at my favorite breakfast spot, thinking that surely I would be tempted to eat it. I took one bite and just couldn't eat any more of it. I was sitting there, probably looking dejected, and my server came over and asked if there was anything wrong with my meal. I started crying and said that it was as delicious as always, I just hadn't been able to eat for a few days, and apparently couldn't even eat my favorite thing. I apologized for offending the kitchen and began to pay for my meal and leave. My server insisted it was on the house, because I was a good customer and she could see that I was having a hard time. She then asked if there was anything I thought I could eat. I said hot chocolate would probably work, but as it wasn't on their menu I would have to go find some or maybe make it at home. She said she'd see what she could do, and came out of the kitchen with a perfect hot chocolate. When I managed to drink the first cup she brought me another one, and when I tried to pay she again told me it was on the house.
At the time, I was struggling with very low self esteem. I thought the only memorable and valuable thing about me was my accomplishments, and felt pretty invisible otherwise. This act of pure kindness and caring made a big impact on how I felt about myself. I of course left a large cash tip, and I think some hugs were exchanged as well. I moved out of state several months later, and I wish I had been able to bring that restaurant with me.

I’m newly in the healthcare field and I don’t celebrate holidays so I don’t mind working every holiday shift and I decided to sit down and eat with a patient in the hospital I had to visit for daily tests who didn’t have any family visiting her and she started sobbing with appreciation and that’s when I knew I loved my job is making a connection like that with someone 🥹

The last story got me. I worked at a steakhouse for years and I will never forget this young fellow. Showed up for his 8th birthday with mom, dad and little sister who was about 5 in a blazer and bootie. The most genuinely sweet, polite and very interactive child I've ever served. We'd offer free dessert for birthdays and when I told this genuine gentleman he had the pick of the menu he says, "I love your cheesecake but my little sister really loves chocolate and I want to share so I will take the brownie Sunday, thank you." Loved this guy, told his parents that they are raising a true man and then told him that he is one of the most chivalrous, kind and polite people I ever served. Never change Evan...never change.
For sure thought that story would end with you paying for one dessert yourself so each kids got the dessert they wanted
This reminds me of a story. Over the summer, I worked in the kitchen of a summer camp, and one day, a camper asked to see the chef, so we all assumed that either they were being annoying or they had some kind of allergens so they wanted to make sure they could eat the food. But, when the cook came out and talked to them, they just said "I wanted to tell you that I loved the spaghetti and meatballs", which really made the chef's day. Children are the best!

Im an autistic person and unfamiliar foods are REALLY hard for me. I have involuntary gagging reactions which are especially hard because I have a phobia of getting sick. But I would NEVER go out and buy something to bring back and add to a meal I got at a restaurant! I’m open about my food struggles with my partner so we go to places that serve my “safe” foods and I try new things at home where he doesn’t shame my reactions if they occur.
I was thinking about this situation too. But I think if someone DID need ranch, they should bring a little bottle with them everywhere or sachets of sauce. Cause leaving in the middle of hanging out is a no go.
Plus, I would absolutely think my date was leaving early if they got up and left like she did💀😅

I was honestly so shocked with the fiancé and five year old story. He just turned 5, which means he doesn’t go to elementary school yet, which is why the dad has to “have him around all the time”. This dad clearly loves his son a lot, puts in time and effort, and maybe has some problems with his ex and therefore keeps the kid close to him. The fiancé clearly doesn’t understand that they too have to put in effort to bond with this child if they want to be with the dad. It’s a 2 for 1 package. You cannot love one and reject the other. Jesus. I’ve worked with kids for so long, I can guarantee that dad singing happy birthday in that restaurant for him was a core memory.
Edit: The discourse about whether the 5 year old is in school yet. I’m assuming this takes place in the US, and some states you have to be 5 or close to turning 5 before going into Kindergarten. If you’re younger like 3-4, you can go into preschool but I’m pretty sure they only do half days for them. Maybe that’s just regional as well. 🤷 Regardless I assume this kid is around a lot anyways from what OP said.

My mom was a server when I was little, so I know how hard they work. I tip well, but I watch them to see if they are actually swamped or if they aren’t doing their job. But I had this server once who I gave a massive tip to. See we had 5 kids at our table, kids are messy and a pain sometimes. He handled it with such grace, didn’t get visibly upset and was on top of making sure the little ones had the crayons, drinks and other things they needed to make our dining experience as easy as possible with 5 kids. So I walked up after our meal, tipped him roughly 65%. He tried to deny the tip, as it was obviously a hefty one. But I looked him in the eye and said no, this is because you were amazing. You deserve it. Made the poor guy tear up.

One time, me and my family went to Olive Garden. Our waiter was this high school kid with great energy but we could tell he was a little nervous. When we got our salad as an appitizer, another waiter told us that it was his first week working there. My mom was a server for many years so she (and me and the rest of my family) had so much sympathy for him. He did a great job throughout the meal. At the end of the meal before we left, my dad gave him an $100 tip. I gave it to him and the look on his face made me so happy. He was so grateful! Everyone won that night. The waiter got some money and my family and I left full and happy to have helped someone. It doesn't take a lot to be kind :)

Before my sister was diagnosed with cancer, she was obsessed with chalky textured and flavored things. Actual Chalk, talc powder, smarties, tums, food or not, you name it, she craved it like an obsession and needed something chalky with all her during all meals. Her body needed “chalk” so bad her cognitive function was more focused that than her social awareness. We later found out that she was deathly anemic bc she had an unstable cancer in her colon bleeding out for months. The anemia made her body focus on survival by developing pica. She stopped craving chalk after her blood count became balanced thru blood transfusions. She’s also in remission now.
So glad she’s in remission! Wish her the best. 👏❤️

I was a manager at a Loves Truck stop for 4 years. The number of truckers that would come in wearing a wedding ring and ask me to "join them in the showers" was astounding. When I obviously said no, they complained to my district manager.
Also, when creepy customers stay at your counter and talk, you were basically held hostage. They knew you couldn't just walk away from them.
What complain could they possibly give to the manager?

I used to work at a trampoline park as a party host and front desk lead. I once had a lady come to the front desk with her children and a vase of flowers. She continued to explain to me how one of her children Olive had passed a few years prior and every year on her birthday would give flowers to someone to hopefully brighten their day just like Olive always brightened theirs, I proceeded to go in the back and cry. I also had an extremely stressed out mom come early to set up for her child's birthday. My manager who scheduled the party put them in the wrong room and it just seemed like nothing was going in this moms favor, so I turned to the mom and told her "We're gonna figure this out, and your child is gonna have a great birthday." She then broke down in tears and I gave her a hug. She was the sweetest mom that truly just wanted the best for her kid. We got the room figured out and everyone had a great time. I'd continuously check in and praise the mom for the decorations and point out how much fun the kids were having, hoping to ease her anxiety. The party was kind, and even picked up after themselves. The mom was upset at the end of the party because she only brought $20 for a tip (which I'd say was the average left for any of the party hosts) and I honestly could've cared less because of how kind she was. Sorry for the long comment lol

Those wholesome moments like that… you never forget them. One Valentine’s Day, I was working the evening shift at my job at “Bread Bread Café” because I was single af and offered to work that night if they needed to give anyone else the night off. It’s not a particularly busy night for chains like that; everyone is at nice, full-service restaurants so I was on my own behind the register. A mother with her 7ish year-old son came up to the front to place their order. I commented on his really cool Yoda shirt that he was wearing. His eyes got wide and he said, “Really?”
And I was like, “Yeah, really! Yoda is so cool!”
The kid then proceeds to excitedly start lifting his shirt and goes, “Well! Um, well! I have… another shirt on…” to his mother’s embarrassment. I just laughed and said, “It’s okay,” as he revealed a second, secret shirt he was wearing with Spider-Man on it underneath the Yoda shirt.
I told him that Spider-Man was also really cool and he was like, “Yeah,” in that cute way kids do when they’re done talking.
The mom paid for their meals and went to go pick up their food. It was the best Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had. 😂

I 1000% agree. I would deliver to a lot of camps during the summer. The tips were usually pretty bad, but the children treating me like an angel coming down to bless them with pizza made it worth it.

I was a delivery driver for 4 years and i dreaded it lmao. Im at my job trying to make money and if you were handing the pizza over to kids the probability of a tip was abysmal. I also know parents would purposefully make their kids answer the door so they wouldn’t have to tip.

On my daughters 8th birthday this year she could sense things haven't been going well financially and never asked for anything outrageous, just something simple and I managed to scrounge up enough to add a couple pizzas from a popular pizza joint. I asked them to write Happy 8th Birthday on the box and when they showed up they had added 2 desserts and every box had a note on it with a blessing on it for her. I still cry uncontrollably over it whenever I think about it. Thanked him profusely, gave an amazing review and upped the tip as much as I could and just so thankful. They just have no idea the change they made for us that day.

I had a wholesome restaurant story from the delivery service in my country - Grab. There was this story of a female student who ordered the cheapest dish on the menu every single day. One day, the restaurant made a big nutritious dish for her with a note asking if she's okay and that they wanted her to eat healthy. It turned out the student was in a bad place financially and was depressed. She's really thankful that the restaurant noticed her and sent well wishes to her.

They very well could've made up an excuse, like they rearranged who was waiting which table, or that she had to leave, just anything. Saves the waitress from potentially dangerous situations

My favorite memory was this lady that was breastfeeding but her baby had severe allergies to a lot of foods so she was worried about eating certain foods. I went through every menu item and we went through trying to figure out what she could eat that would not cause issues for the baby. She ended up writing me a hand written note and mailing it to the restraunt and I cried so hard when I read it. It's been years and I still have that letter.
About the first story - my gf has epilepsy and there is no proof that caffeine causes seizures, although some say it makes their epilepsy worse. But if it was, the logical thing would just be to… stop drinking coffee? Or have decaf? My gf has caffeine all the time (she literally keeps a huge bottle of Coca Cola in her room) and it doesn’t make her seizures worse. If it did, she’d give it up, just like she has with taking baths and swimming. This is just someone who wants to cause trouble
I have epilepsy too and caffeine does make my epilepsy worse (or at least more prominent) and I try to regulate my caffeine intake, no coffees everyday or not many energy drinks. and if I already feel like it is a worse day, I definitely would not risk drinking a coffee

My manager, "R" was concerned about this and went to politely talk to her and see what was up. At that point, this woman started SCREAMING at "R" telling her it's none of her business and she paid to stay there yada yada. My manager was a bit new to the position at the time, so being very flustered, she YELLED BACK telling her she cannot stay there with that kind of behavior, basically told her to get off the property asap or she will call the cops (let me also add that our bed n breakfast is a really beautiful Victorian mansion next to the ocean with older couples and newly weds who pay $300-$500 a night here so in my opinion, this woman was being a very big nuisance) .... Fast forward a couple hours after she "moved out' and the cops actually end up picking her up because she had broken into a big house next door by CLIMBING TO THE SECOND FLOOR AND CUTTING THEIR WINDOW SCREEN OPEN! Basically we had found that this woman had just lost her house and was not doing well mentally. This happened about 4 years ago so I hope she is doing well now and is indoors. But there are so many scary encounters within hospitality... Human sex trafficking, prostitution, and even death. I thank God that I never had to personally deal with any of those!

I was a server at a buffet style food court within a grocery store. There was a man who came every Tuesday. He seemed to always have a super serious disposition, but would always thank me by name (it was on my name tag). Eventually I asked his name so I could use it to greet him each week. He started smiling more. I learned that he came every Tuesday to get food to take to have lunch with his mom that was in a nursing home. So sweet.

Spent 8 years in the service industry and it taught me that sometimes people need a hand up and are having a bad day. It taught me that everyone deserves empathy and respect no matter what. I was a top notch server (i received recognition for my service from three restaurants) I absolutely give grace to any server that needs it, and when I was serving I had so many customers who made my day better. The woman was purposefully taking advantage of someone else's kindness and thought nothing would happen, then she got criticized and rightfully embarrassed, she only felt upset when she was being held up to a responsibility she felt wasn't her problem. The Smosh Mouth episodes with Chanse are my Absolute Favorite. Chanse and Amanda just VIBE with their social skills and life experience and Shayne is able to offer more chill outsider perspectives without interrupting. Also, they’re all so earnest when they get down to it?? Everyone at Smosh seems earnest actually, but I think Amanda is especially so, and that’s great to get Shayne to open up a bit more on the podcasts (and just give him someone fun to play off of) and Chanse is just so receptive to anything anyone has to say and it always turns so thoughtful. Needed this today. Some way older men asked me out to drinks right around close. I said no, they checked out and left on great terms. Then they waited at the entrance of the parking lot for at least an hour. They knew I was the only one there. I don’t know if they knew how sketchy it seemed, but I took the back exit today.

yeah, unfortunately you have to pick and choose your battles in this life (as in, service industry). sometimes there are fights worth spending your energy on, sometimes you have to put on your Server Façade and move on so as to preserve your sanity.
When I was a kid, I was a very picky eater. I went to a restaurant with my mom and I didn't like most things on the menu. I asked the waiter for help to choose something. She was so sweet and nice that I asked my mom to go on their website later to compliment her great service. We received a response days later saying they threw a party for her at the restaurant so she could feel appreciated. I felt so happy but it was such a big deal for them that I remember thinking people don't often give good feedback. That's something that I try to do every time I go out. It's so easy to be a good customer... It's sad that people enjoy being assholes sometimes.

The thing about the ranch story that gets me is-
I too have a weird relationship with food due to autism things (at every restaurant I go to I just get kids meal chicken nuggets and mayo), so I understand being that unwilling to try something new even if it’s “close enough”, I understand going out of your way to get something specific so you could actually eat the food you bought, but cmon…. Saying “like normal restaurants” and being rude isn’t excusable (saying “like normal restaurants” gives xenophobic vibes and that’s just super uncomfortable-), it’s really not necessary.
Get the ranch (or just have your own bottle with you if you know you’re going out to eat, just in case), put it on your food, hide it in your bag so it doesn’t become an issue, and try not to make a big deal about it! Maybe say “hey I have a weird thing with food and I feel the need to put ranch on everything” if you need to explain yourself

My favorite part of being a server was getting drawings from kids. Knowing that I made a kid really happy, enough for them to want to make some art for me, felt really good. Plus, when the kids are happy, usually the parents are too. I have a little box in my closet where I saved them all. Some are genuinely pretty good!

OP said they the wife sending back meals for petty shit is something she learned from her family. *Listen to me so close.* If you are planning on spending the rest of your life with someone, and they have a relationship with their family, MEET THE FAMILY. Because you’re not just marrying the person you’re marrying their family, both in the sense of them being in your life as well as your spouse’s upbringing and how it affects them as a person. You have got to be aware of what their behavior looks like based on the family. Not everyone is like their family but most times they are in some way or another, how you are raised (or lack there of) is really influential. You’ve gotta work it out with yourself and your partner to see if that’s what you want to commit to.

For the ranch girl story, she was defiently in the wrong, BUT as someone with ARFID, i understand needing stuff in order to eat. It's really hard for me to eat most foods either due to texture or strong smells. Like, i can tell when something would taste good to everyone else, but i just know i can't eat it, so i avoid it. I also use garlic salt as my "ranch" when i need it. If this girl knew she needed ranch or that she might not like the food, she should've had stuff on hand instead of buying it or going somewhere else. Needing the ramch wasn't the asshole part. How she went about it was.

@@kaybadberg534avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, i havent been diagnosed but based on my eating patterns and accommodating mental disorders i’m 99% sure i have it. it’s extremely hard for me to try new foods on a whim or expand my palette because i have a difficult time with certain textures or scents. going out with friends to eat can be hard for me because i feel like i limit where we can go, so i typically eat something beforehand/check out the menu before we leave. with the ranch story, i can see why they would be so persistent about it but it definitely is over the line to make everything about you and your needs instead of maybe just trying out the sauce one time or being like hey maybe i’ll try to eat rn or i’ll just eat it later when i get home. ARFID is linked to autism, so it’s possible that OP missed social cues and didn’t realize that they were being impolite idek lol
The Lawry's garlic salt in my home is always empty! Garlic salt goes on or in most foods for me when I cook at home, and if I'm ever making "quick" boxed meals, I'm probably putting some Frank's red hot buffalo sauce on it...

I agree with them, that the one improvement would have been to play dumb and, even though you absolutely know it was deliberate, play it off like you don't know and you're just trying to be super helpful. It's not uncommon for people (especially femme people) to get flak for "picking a fight" if they initiate a confrontation, even if the confrontation is "why have you been lying to bilk money out of me?" If you bring the wallet along but don't directly admit that you knew about the lie, then the sister in law has to either pay her share or be the one to start the conflict over her own wrongdoing. If your husband didn't know about the ruse, well, he has to acknowledge it now. If he knew but is too conflict-averse to call his sister on it, he's more likely to get angry with his sister than you, because not only was she the one who's been lying to get free food, she's also the one who didn't just play along to be nice.
NGL, as a former waiter/busser if I had to deal with someone like that wife with all their requests but at the end of it THEY THEMSELVES wrote out an itemized list of what each part of the tip was for, even if it wasn't like a huge tip they would literally have become my favorite customer. I wouldn't care WHAT their request was I would adore that person. It honestly would have made my day, especially if they were otherwise stressful.

I work as a bartender and recently I had a customer ask for a shot of a top shelf vodka (by name mind you) on the rocks with lots of ice and five slices of lemon. After making it exactly the way they asked, they told me it was not enough and asked for another shot and more ice and one more lemon. After filling their drink, I charged them for a double (because it essentially was) and they complained why it was so expensive (it was $22, which is expensive but also makes sense based on the brand and it’s price). If they didn’t want to pay so much, why ask for specifics?

Funny Chanse mentioned Thailand because my wife is Thai and always smuggles chili powder and chili oil into restaurants in the US since they never have anything hot enough for her. But, she has little travel containers that fit in her purse so nobody notices and she doesn't criticize the restaurant for her weird thing about wanting heat in her food. She's never even slightly implied that it's the restaurant that's wrong. We travel all over the world and she tries the food without it first but she's always ready with it if not. The entire issue here was how she belittled another culture for not being "normal" and rerfused to try to even step out of her little bouncy bubble of safety.

Agreed. I keep a small tube of salt in my bag in case i go somewhere that's unlikely to have a salt shaker (and it's come in handy more often than you'd think). Two of my friends are allergic to corn, and HFC is a common ingredient in ketchup, so they used to walk into diners carrying their own bottle. If you manage your own needs and you don't make a big production out of it, it's unlikely to cause much fuss. The issue is not in having an unusual need, it's in A. picking on the restaurant for not being immediately able to accommodate your unusual need, and B. making a big show of going out and buying the ranch, thereby leaving your date alone and throwing shade at the restaurant again. And if you don't already have your ranch with you and the restaurant can't accommodate you, well, it's not a dietary restriction, and there worse things in life than eating a meal that isn't as flavorful as you'd like.
pretty sure she said she had tried to other sauces so she def did at least TRY to step out of her comfort zone, so i think the only issues were leaving DURING the date to get the ranch and belittling another culture and not the ranch itself. i’d argue it’s fine even if she didn’t try it without the ranch before using it as long as she respects the culture.

First customer should’ve been banned a long time ago. Starbucks, right? We would’ve banned them from the district a long time ago. I have absolutely no clue why they are putting up with it. We would’ve said, “I’m sorry, it looks like we are unable to provide you with what you need and will have to ask you to find a new store to go to as we cannot serve you any longer.”

Splitting the bill has never been an issue with my friend group because we talk about it super openly beforehand. If one of us is broke, they’ll mention it and we’ll either go somewhere less expensive or someone else might offer to pay for them. If someone wants to treat everyone, that is clear up front. As with most of these issues, communication solves the problem
as a server, this video gave me a new appreciation of my job! it’s not ideal most of the time, but when something nice happens or when someone is especially kind, it is worth it.

Amanda made a really good point! We see all the time in movies people asking out other people that are in the midst of working, so I do wonder if that influenced people in thinking it’s ok, when it’s actually something that should be proceeded with caution
Agreed. Movies, books, series and any other entertainment medium tend to romanticize this type of behavior, while in real life this doesn't work out in a good way 95% of the time. In real life it only works the way Amanda explained it: very subtly (like writing the phone number and leave), without obligation and without turning it into a weird awkward situation.
Now it’s the only time people have contact with strangers. I’d guess that’s more where it comes from than TV and movies but they definitely make it worse.

My father co managed a restaurant for my entire life. He’d always come home and tell me about the people who came in, especially if he hadn’t seen them in a while. I have no idea how he remembered so many people’s names and details about them. He passed away last year and I’ve heard so many previous customer’s tell me it’s not the same without him. 🖤

The only thing wrong with Ranch Girl is how she handled it. Being dismissive of cultural cuisine, being snarky & saying it wasn't a "real" restaurant, being rude to the waiter, and not communicating food issues with her date are what make her an asshole. If she had communicated with the date, given the food a chance, and been respectful of the whole thing, I think she'd deserve the legend status Shayne initially hoped for. It sounds like she's likely neurodivergent and just went about advocating for her needs, wants, and preferences

@@jameswarden5312 Food is so personal that I wouldn't consider her an AH aside from the part they supposedly left without making sure the person she was with would be okay with her leaving. (And the 'normal food' but whether it's normative speaking or malicious speaking is unknown - both not great but different levels).
Even traditional foods are constantly adapted to the place/people they are being served. For example plenty of popular 'Indian dishes' are actually British fusion that gets labelled as authentic by much of the world from ignorance.

I had a server in a hotel restaraunt I was at with my family. We would go there every night for dinner and every morning for breakfast. This server had a very strong french accent and he would make us laugh by saying how he must be our “favourite angry french man” which would always make my day. It was a week long holiday and he would act mean (passing us our meal then snatching it back, ruffling my hair, mocking our accent etc.) he would always make my day and was generally very kind. this was a few years ago and it still makes me smile when i think about it. just goes to show how such a small thing can make core memories.
