  • The Capri cemented its reputation as the blue collar exotic car, but when Aston Martin Tickford stepped in to create the ultimate Capri by way of a bespoke bodykit and turbocharging the 2.8 Injection, you got the Tickford Capri. This ultra rare collector's piece is a dream car for Jeff, but does it live up to his expectations...?

I grew up in Newport Pagnell and remember seeing Tickford Capris (and lots of Aston Martins) being a quick post-build test run along the Newport Pagnell bypass - they sounded awesome.

Loved my Capris, started with a bright yellow 1.6L Mk2 (seemed a good idea at the time!), then a Mk3 3.0S with a fully balanced Specialised Engines RS3100 conversion including triple Webers. 225bhp with a 7200 rpm redline and more torque than a modded Rover 3.5 V8. Finally, a Janspeed modded 2.8i Special.
I learnt more about car handling on the average drive to work in rain and snow than with any other car type. One particular evening on the B4520 from Builth Wells to Brecon required ½ hour for the front discs to stop glowing bright red, the going up hills was great, it was the coming down that caused the problems!

I've owned tons of capris,my current two since 1987,a factory standard 1981 pre facelift 3.0S in silver, with orange and brown tartan trim and from1993 a1979 2.0S in silver now a 4.3 V8(Rover/TVR BV),t600 with a watts linkage five link, comp struts, fully welded, big brakes etc.now in Brooklands green with silver S stripes and shark grey recaro trim from a late 2.8 special with the rear seat cover unusable but cleverly disguising the link boxes, which is soon to be converted to a FI Duratec V6,I built a mk1 gasser V8 in the eighties, complete with tubular chassis that's around somewhere still,a MK2 pick up truck with a coffin lid deck cover😁,I still service and repair four or five 2.8's for various customers and friends, hence I 've worked on a few, including a Tickford back in the day. It was a proper hand built job,cup washers and screws😂,nothing fitted quite right even by the standards of the day,The Tickford always looked like a dog's dinner anyway, chav tat!,something Liberace would own.For less than half the money a Turbo Technics Capri looked better, made much more sense and without all that tat stuck to it,faster!. The RS2600,3100, swaymar and Zakspeed conversions, the perana and the Brooklands(espT.T. models) and probably even the JPS specials are more desirable to me.And Peter Zakowski will show you the real holy grail of capris.

Yes, looks horrible! Just think how hot the engine bay would of gotten without anywhere for the hot air to escape, and by blanking off the grill with a window sill Tickford stole from someones new upvc windows. I think that shows the car was running very low boost. The 280 Brooklands was far better looking.

@@iiiexeiii7233I agree, and to be fair it looked a bit gaudy even new. But the majority of the cooling air comes via the intake under the bumper which flows much more air than the grille. I run a FI V8 in my Capri, the air into the grille is entirely ducted into the engines air intake and is completely isolated from the cooling air with no issues regarding temperatures, I even subtly trimmed the grille flutes to aid the as standard, not great flow.

I had a MKIII 3.0 S, which was the most fun I've ever had in a rear wheel drive car, it lived to go sideways and was so controllable, happy days, the I got a full conversion janspeed turbo 230bhp) 2.8i in White like the tickford, but with the sharkskin interior, I added a semi blanked color coded grill and duel wing spoiler, back in the late 80s I thought it was the dogs whatsits and it was brutal in a strait line, quick for the day, but it was positively demonic on bends and the combination of that big turbo, live axel, and lowered suspension made it let go with little to no warning, After several spirited attempts at killing me it nearly succeeded, I limped away from the wreckage but still have twinges to remind me, it met a stonewall holding back a bank that didn't move an inch, I on the other hand was doing about 70 having managed to scrub off some speed, fortunately I was unsurprisingly going backwards having swerved to avoid some nugget who didn't bother looking to overtake as I overtook him, and while I manged to miss him and the car he was overtaking I couldn't get it back, the car went from 70 to 0 on impact and the only reason I wasnt sprayed across the inside of the car is it folded up like a concertina absorbing the impact, while I travelled backwards strapped in the seat, the back axel ended up under the rear seats and I was sat over it...still in one piece...the car however was complete scrap, half as long, with the profile of an accordian, after that I took a break from cars and went motorcycle racing...and nearly broke my back but thats another story doh!

A old neighbour of mine had one here in Queensland Australia, its a Black one on the 15" Brooklands Capri seven spokes. The car had been here in Australia since 1987 imported by the original owner that drove it seldom during the englisch summer, then a mate of a mate bought it for his wife in 1993 with 26thou miles on the clock, then in 1998 my neighbour bought it with 34thou miles and owned it till 2006 putting another 10thou on the clock before it was sold to a new owner in Sydney.
During Paul's(my neighbour) ownership, he found that the Tickford grill blocked a lot of air getting to the radiator which pretty important for cooling especially when the car is driven in the Australian summer... so he got himself a 2.8 grill and low n behold no more over heating.

@@michaelwalker1145 from what ive read there was a zackspeed conversion which was classed as a factory turbo in Germany/Europe. i havent found info on how many were made but they were carburattor fed engines so robably either very early 2.8 engines from the Granada (which would make sense to use a Cologne engine in a car for german market) OR a late 3 litre Essex. Zackspeed may have overbored it to 3.1 in the process of the conversion but again, i can find no information about this, as i write. however the power output would suggest that this was a largely standard carb fed engine (the 3.0 carb and 2.8 injection were both around 160hp in standard form) with a low boost turbo as it had 188hp which was pretty decent but the Tickford with its 2.8i engine (again largely standard from what info i can find)and the turbo (again probably low boost) pushed power to around 200hp. the Zackspeed turbo was, in my opinion, nicer to look at with x pack style wider arches and more in keeping with the capri shape bodykit, but the tickford is more powerful and probably as rare especially nowadays. last i heard, some 25-20 years ago there were only 48 Tickford Capris left.

It was nothing special, body kit looked a bit Halfords. It did go well but still a tail happy Capri. Enjoyed my RS 500 a bit more, had it 13 years, that was well finished off by Tickford
