Porsche 944 - How to Re-key the Door Locks

  • This week we are rekeying the door locks on this 1984 Porsche 944. When this car arrived it had one key for the ignition but another for the door handle. The passenger side door didn't have a key at all. Many times when the door handle is broken or needs to be replaced a lot of places will just swap on another handle without putting the correct lock cylinder back in. So you end up with a lot of situations like this. In the event that the lock cylinder is broken and needs to be replaced you can always use your VIN to get another from the dealership. However, if the cylinders are fine then I find that its a lot cheaper and quicker to rekey the lock using the methods used in the video.

    Same pins as VW uses in there door handles. So VW golf/Rabbit cylinders probably can be good donors for parts.

    You're amazing for this tutorial. I most likely have to do this for my car when I replace the ignition tumbler.

    Hi, I recently bought a 924S with low miles in dark red colour here im Switzerland, i'm super happy with it. Except that it has two different keys. Now with your video I'm quite confident i can fix it myself. Thank you!

    Great video! Where can you have porsche keys made? I have a 85, 928 and need a spare key. I'm pretty certain mine is hand filed. I have a couple of blanks but have been unable to find anyone to make a cut. Any help would be great.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have asked a few 928 owners and as far as they know you have to order a key from the dealership. Although one guy did mention that someone in Australia on the forums can make you one but as far as they know no one else can cut them. I hope that helps!

      @neil7692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I have already tried my porsche dealer without any luck. I'll check out the forum. Since I have a couple of blanks I guess Ill try to hand file one also. Its winter, so I might try to build a jig to aid in this so its not just guessing. Thank you! Keep the videos coming. More 928s! They are super cars...but a pain. Love the 924 and 944s.

    Hi, I’m a new subscriber to your channel, and a new 924S owner. Although I was lucky to find a car in really good shape for a decent price, it’s not perfect. One item I can’t overlook is cracks on the dashboard. Any suggestion on where I can source new/refurbished? I don’t want a skin, but rather replace the one there. Any suggestion from you or your followers will be appreciated. You do great work, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there is a place in Germany that makes fantastic aftermarket dashboards. We actually just got one in and it’s full fiberglass covered in vinyl. Looks as good as the original dash but stronger and more durable. So it shouldn’t crack again. Check out his website werk924.com. They’re rather pricy but definitely the thing you want if your car must be perfect! Good luck and thanks!

    I bought an '87 944 that didn't have keys. I bought an '86 parts car with a Porsche key and a worn spare. I have replaced the door and hatch locks, but can't figure out how to remove the ignition cylinder. Do I need to drill out the two shear bolts that hold the lock assembly, or is there an easy way to take the cylinder out without the key?

  • @bryanskarbek7983
    @bryanskarbek7983 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you use the same procedure for the rear hatch lock? I have a 1987 944s that has a key for the doors and ignition but no key for the rear hatch. I also don't have a key for the factory alarm but I plan to bypass that anyway. Thanks.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard that you can, but I have never tried. I've only had to change one hatch lock and the owner actually ordered a new one. So, as far as that goes, I do know that you can go to the dealership with your VIN number you can order a new hatch lock for about $50. If I ever do have to do this I'll make a video on it.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’m in the middle of swapping door handles on my 87 NA right now and noticed the lock cylinder seal ring (Part# 111-837-227-B) is extremely brittle and is in pieces on one of my handles. I notice you didn’t bother with one and I cant seem to find any replacements. Do you know where to find a set or know of something comparable? Should I not worry so much about it?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of anything else that will work, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Almost all of them have deteriorated by now and I haven't seen any issues from not having them. However, if find something to use as an alternative I will definitely use it. Good luck!

    Tried this tonight on my early car but found instead of a socket joint connecting the handle and the linkage rod there is a permanent pin. Looks like I'll have to open up the interior panel to get access

    • @edredas

      The handles are pretty much the same for all years. There is a permanent pin but that isn't the one you are looking for. I hope that helps!

      Not at the moment, usually it's usually the door handles are the ones changed. Here are some instructions that I found online. forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/697121-how-remove-ignition-lock-cylinder-repair-rekey.html

      @@edredas thank you! i have a customer who has an All-keys lost and for the life of me i couldn't find the retaining clip(or even diagrams and images) to find it, i eventually did (although the ignition housing has gone from German Made to Swiss) find it, four exploratory holes later... if only i had checked this comment section sooner lol looking at it i should have been able to depress it from the front without drilling but hey, live and learn right. i'll definitely be booking marking this for future reference though!

    What about the alarm system key? Just curious.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried rekeying one of those yet, but I think that it would similar. If I ever do rekey one I'm hoping to get an ignition key to work since Porsche missed the mark there. I'm not sure it uses a different style of key or was for just security reasons... so that even if someone did happen to swipe dads spare key they couldn't start the car, but most of the alarm keys just end up missing and rendering it useless. Let me know if you try to rekey it and how it turns out.

    So the slave clutch cylinder failed, now its swapped with a new line coming from the master clutch cylinder. just looking around, i found a three prong round plug harness hanging. could not find where it plugs into. Im assuming it goes the bellhousing and it could be for the shift light arrow, which does not light up, but where does it plug into? Thanks ahead of time.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How big is the plug? If it’s small and comes from the reference sensor bracket then it’s the old diagnostic plug that just mounts on the back of the cam tower. However if it’s larger it’s likely the O2 sensor plug. As for the shift light not coming on then it’s likely burned out inside the tach. It gets its signal from the DME so if the tach is plugged in and working then the light should work. I hope that helps!

    • @MrStroller4u
      @MrStroller4u 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the harness plug is about 1/2 in. diameter black with a with a white sheath.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the O2 sensor plug...
