Quick story time about this song: I heard this song for the first time on the radio back in early 2004. I was around 11 years old and I was absolutely floored by this song. Back in the days before Shazam and the Internet not being what it is now, I had to wait till the end of the song and pray that the DJ would say it’s name so I could find it at the record store. The Dj never said it so I used my grandmas cell phone and called the station to ask what song it was. The phone was really muffled and I thought he said it was “the used” and not Muse. Went to the record store and gathered all “the used” albums, got into emo music lol, but still couldn’t find this song. Fast forward 3 years later one of my friends who was pretty well versed in music PLAYED THIS SONG one day and I started freaking out. I told him I’d been looking for the name of this song for years. THAT SAME DAY, I went to the record store and bought this CD. Sorry for the long story, but this is one of my favorite songs ever and I’m so so happy you covered it! Keep up the great work I love your videos! 🤘🏾

That is an awesome story! Finding Muse was fun for me as well, I remember hearing one of their songs on the radio and it was definitely hard to track them down and figure out what was playing, but eventually I met a friend who was into Muse and played me an entire album. We looked for concert tickets, but in America they weren't headlining their own tours yet and were on tour with My Chemical Romance as an opening act.
We went to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland and saw them live, field tickets, and it started to downpour. There ended up being a small group of about 30 of us that gathered together and were just rocking out in the rain, dancing and enjoying ourselves while everyone else waited for My Chemical Romance to come on and play.
Their last song on that set was this one, Stockholm Syndrome, and ever since I saw that live performance I realized just how freaking talented Muse is and Matt Bellamy is just an insane frontman. Still one of my favorite performances of all time and he just captured us and the stage with such charisma and presence.
Actually, that concert might of been really awesome for you to see! LOL, little Muse, little EMO, all fun!

For a band composed of three members, their sounds is always so rich. It's rare.

They never shy away from new stuff.

    • @SixteenJacobsCreams

Is very cool but also important to note you basically need a 2nd guitarist and a keyboard player to do it like this. The more stripped back early live stuff is quite cool in its own right.

I’ve always thought Matt Bellamy is a musical prodigy. I mean his vocals are completely next level, his guitar playing while not GOAT status is really unique, tight and melodic, and he’s a brilliant classically trained pianist.

    • @nritsch

@@immaculatetoilet well I'm a big fan of synthwave, and artists like Carpenter Brut or Pertubator, and even like those synthpop inspired songs by the weeknd. What I love about Muse is their ability to make a 4 minute song seem like some epic prog masterpiece. They build so much drama and tension, can mix in synth and piano, are equally at home rocking out or playing beautiful, heart wrenching stuff. Matt is a legend but all three of them are amazing.

  • @mychemicalromancewillpierc5241
    @mychemicalromancewillpierc5241 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Muse are INCREDIBLE I highly recommend songs like Plug in Baby, Micro Cuts and Showbiz if you want to see Matthew’s extremely high voice talent. Chris is very unique with the way he distorts his bass, as someone fondly put it he distorts his bass so far up the ass that he’s become the second guitar player LOL. Many get mistaken thinking the bass is getting covered up by Matt’s guitar but nope! It’s just Chris! Some songs I recommend for seeing Chris’ bass playing skills are hysteria, time is running out, hyper music. DOM is a FANTASTIC drummer and he keeps up with the other two. All three of them solidly hold their ground, which is what makes them such a great band. I recommend listening to assassin to properly listen to Dominic’s drum power. Also highly recommend listening to liquid state, which is a song that Chris, the bass player, sings! It’s fantastic! All with a fantastic bassline as well

•••Not bad for a 3 pc eh? I only learned of Muse myself when I moved to London 7 yrs ago and they quickly knocked Queen and Foo Fighters from my #1 top spots as my all time favs (seen Queen 3x before “the end” and FF’s a dozen times + and still going). Seen Muse only twice since pandemic hit but can’t wait for more!!! Bass is awesome. Drummer has an interesting backstory. Matt (writer / guitarist / crazy singer and scale) his “thing” that caught my attention is allot of his lyrics don’t rhythm and drop sin harmonies that are mind blowing. Plays 7 string guitar but now owns Mansion guitars too! (just as some background info) 👍🏻
    BB
PS; just to show exactly how spot on you are from listening to that one track - you mentioned their engineer? Check this bonus video out. LOVE this behind the scenes making of 2nd law. Covers every point you made about texture, layers, bassist and drummer (getting it and sometimes not not getting it) plus how Muse is NOT a “3 chord bog standard rock band”. Matt writes all these sections and back pieces and is a true 2000’s prodigy. This is why bubble gum rock of today doesn’t stand up to classics of yesterday and today! (IMHO) b.b.

Lots of electronic sound on their newer stuff like "madness" or " dig down" on tracks that i love, that i wouldn't typically be drawn to...but they make it work, and well! I love this band!!

I've never really listened to radio, not a fan of pop music and commercials make me want to scoop out my sensory organs with a rusty spoon, but around 2005 my cd player stopped working and on one late night drive to get some food, I tuned to the local rock station and this song came on. By the first chorus I had pulled over and was just blown away by what I was listening to and after it was over I turned around foodless and headed home to get on the radio stations website to see what the hell just happened.
Been a huge Muse fan ever since.

fun fact - the bassist actually played as drummer but when they got new drummer, matt told him to played as bassist..that's why their bass and drums always sync and blend in,and produce dynamic sound..

    • @lounolastname4477
      @lounolastname4477 ปีที่แล้ว

That is not accurate. Dom has always been their drummer since when they first started the band whilst still in school. Chris was a drummer in another band and Matt and Dom asked him to join their band as a bass player.

For amazing Muse bass, check out Hystria or Futurism. Chris Wolstenholme is a fucking beast and whats funny is when he joined the school band as it is now with the 3 of them, he was never a bassist but a drummer, but they already had Dom Howard on the drums. I love that they started out as a school band with terrible(or amazing) band names.

Thanks for getting around to Muse! Definitely one of my favorites. I tried to comment on the first upload but just missed it haha. If you end up getting back around to them, I bet you'd dig the strings arrangements in Exogenesis Symphony 1, 2, and 3. Knights of Cydonia is also crazy, and the song Hysteria has one of the best rock bass riffs of all time.

You finally did "Muse"!! That makes me very happy.
They have so many fantastic songs, you could really go down a huge rabbit hole on this group, trust me. Matt's vocal range is ridiculous. such a wonderful falsetto. He is a master guitarist AND pianist as well. See "Butterflies and Hurricanes" and the incomparable epic "Exogenesis Symphony" (all 3 parts). If you do not go crazy over those, I will eat your surfboard.
"Madness", "Uprising", "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Knights of Cydonia" are some big highlights, but I could list 2 dozen easily.
Just watch their "Live at Rome Olympic stadium" concert. One of the best concert videos ever.

So happy to see you check out Muse! They've been my favorite band for a long while and their bassist Chris Wolstenholme (who also does backing vocals) is the reason I picked up my first bass guitar (and a fuzz pedal!) around 17 years ago. More specifically the song Hysteria (off the same album as Stockholm Syndrome) made me say to myself "That sounds awesome, I wonder if I could learn how to do that?"
Two of my favorite things about this track specifically are that the super heavy outro riff is just the main guitar riff played slower and that Chris plays this song using his fingers. Holy endurance Batman!
They have a lot of other really great music that I think you'd enjoy. They are also one of, if not the best, live bands going right now so it might be cool to check out some live versions of their songs too. Other songs that I'd recommend checking out would be: New Born, Citizen Erased, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia, Exogenesis Symphony 1-3 (these would probably be in your wheelhouse as a composer), Reapers, and The Handler. Awwwright!!

Matt Bellamy and Thom Yorke's huge vocal range's are considered to be tenors. Both covering between 3 & 1/2 and 4 octaves. And they sing a lot in a high falsetto.

saw them a bunch of times live as a teenager.the lead singer matt who also plays the only guitar (apart from the bass obviously, they are a 3 piece band normally) does all the synth and piano stuff and he actually had a few guitars that had built in synth controllers or i guess fx controllers where the pick guard would be as a teen that was the coolest stuff ever. love the reaction as always.

This is easily my top 3 songs from Muse. DEFINITELY need to check out New Born by them. That's off the album before this one called Origin of Symmetry. Panic station would also be a great pick to show some of their growth and change. They played around with more electronic sounds gor a while starting in 2006? With Black Holes and Revelations.

Another incredible band that got me fully into music both as a listener and as a musician eventually. This song in particular, along with the rest of the album. It was one of the first albums I bought for myself and I still have it nearly 20 years later now. I can play all the guitar and bass parts and sing this one! I've maybe only never covered it because of all the complex engineering you talked about, but maybe I could do a stripped down version someday. It's a lot of fun to play bass at this tempo haha! I love the chord changes in the verses and the monster riffs, especially that one at the end. So heavy! They used to stretch this one out live for like 10-12 minutes sometimes just jamming on huge riffs, so much fun. Muse is great live. Still up there as one of my faves, but I do tend to feel like more recently a lot of their albums have been kind of a few years behind the trend, and I don't necessarily care for some of their business decisions now. They feel a little more interested in the business side than in their fans, but hey can't argue with success I guess.
I would further recommend "New Born," "Hysteria," "Knights of Cydonia," "Reapers," "Resistance," "Cave," "Thought Contagion," "Supremacy," well I could go on and on. I tried to pick one per album or so, maybe not the best reflection of the variety because Muse is all over the place and I love it but I do have a bias towards big rock riffs. If you are lookin for cool orchestral stuff there's plenty of that too. Maybe check out the whole "Exogenesis Symphony"

I've heard Muse plenty of times over the years and like them but never really tried to get into them. In the last year or so all of the prog rock and metal I've been listening to has really trained my ears and hearing this song for the first time in a LONG time, I heard the opening guitar and thought "this is kind of proggy". And then as I'm typing this comment, he says it! Kind of cool that I can pick up on this stuff now.

I can tell you, as someone who grew up with Muse in the change of millennia, and started learning bass so I could be in a band, _hellbent_ on finger plucking, and on learning ALL Muse songs on bass - that one was *NOT* easy 😂😂
The most technical difficult Muse track I learnt on bass before haitus was Knights of Cydonia. But then I think the part I learnt originally is a synth arpeggio, in retrospect. But never got to sure.
I learnt that I need longer fingers. LOL
Edit: You're entirely correct, this song is drop D for bassists!
