    Bro, that bus photo.... the tones on the raw image are incredible. Love that shot, so like pure small town Ohio. (I am from Columbus). Thanks for making this! Fun to see your process!

    Matt the fence photo was begging for some Portra 160 tones haha. Remind me so much of negative feedback. Thanks for the video, I'm actually doing some b&w projects and this was very helpful!

    My digital camera a Olympus PEN F work flow is easy as well. Keep it simple is my motto. I don't go so far as you with the contrast but what I do is in Photoshop and almost always just using curves to get what I want. There are so many more complicated ways of getting a good black and white image but I just don't feel the need to spend that much time messing around with them. My two films of choice right now are Fuji Acros for my Hasselblad and TRI-X for my 35mm. I shoot them at the rated iso unless I need to bump the TRI-X up a notch for a faster shutter speed. The Acros because I use it for landscapes and want all that nice sharp detail and the TRI-X in my 35mm because I love that snappy TRI-X look. :)

    so difficult to balance film and digital for personal work. i decided to shoot all "personal projects" on film last year and in many ways it makes sense to make that decision. money is of course a concern but, when my computers are full of commercial work it is so refreshing to shoot my own work with my m6, get the rolls bulk processed once a month and edit the contacts heavily and scan in keepers slowly over the next month. Of course depends on what your shooting but for me everyday out and about photography film is starting to make so much more sense. this video is useful for me when i wan to show older digital work and and mix it with 35mm work. thanks for th channel.

    Image 2 is brilliant Matt. I am not a big colour guy myself, but that photo looked great straight out of the camera. I even cropped it on my screen to 16:9 and lost some of the top of the frame which looks particularly nice! Regardless, great workflow, thanks for sharing.

    How do you like the Mastin Labs pack? Have you tested its other colour presets? In your opinion do you think it's worth the steep price?
    And have you ever tried the VSCO film pack? If you have, it'd be dope if you did a Mastin Labs vs VSCO video, comparing both film presets.

    Great videos! Quick question. I noticed that in one of your past videos regarding HP5 you said that you normally pushed it to 1600. Is that the way you normally shoot digital to emulate your BW images when using the Mastin presets, shooting at the same ISO as you would when you are pushing your film, in this case the HP5. I also noticed that you didn't eliminate the grain from the Mastin HP5 preset. You don't find that it degrades the images a bit by adding grain on top of the digital noise already present in the image from shooting at 1600. Keep up the good work.

  • @ImranHussain-de3nw
    @ImranHussain-de3nw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks a lot Matt - excellent video!! i was one of those who asked for this!
    Do you not add any grain or vignetting do the images? presumably, the preset you have created still needs a little tweaking given that the black and white points will vary from shot to shot? Cheers.

    Hi, loved this video. But this got me thinking about a problem I have and have never found a satisfactory solution. I'm sure you must have had the same problem, since you take a billion photos a day, both digital and on film. How do you keep your photo library organized? I have a lot of trouble dealing with a large library of photos...

    Thanks for the sharing, Matt. I wander do you start to shoot less film but more digital after buying the type 262. I find people who loves B&W film generally will also feel attached to digital Ricoh GR, especially its signature high-contrast effect, as it comes with similar film look

    very nice camera what Leica do recommend that's at a lower price and are those black white presets free..

    • @louiedemo
      @louiedemo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as the camera goes, I think you can look for a used 262 since they go for about the same price as an M9 and M240. Try looking at online Leica stores like Leica Store Miami or Leica Store SF and send them an email about what it is you are looking for and what condition you are looking for as well. They are friendly and they will contact you before they post it online sometimes. You can look into the M8, but some people don't like the fact that it is only 10mpx and to be 100% honest it does not deliver bang-for-buck compared to the other options. Do consider that you would need a lens for it as well, which sometimes people forget to save for but they are usually $1500 and on. You can definitely buy third party lenses like Zeiss or Voigtlander, but a Leica lens is well worth saving for. As far as the presets go you can check out the link below that leads to the Mastin Labs shop. They are around $100 USD for a pack which include quite a lot of different presets. If you want to dip your toes into presets go to VSCO and download the free packs they offer. Best of luck and don't forget to shoot for fun and most importantly for yourself!

  • @Heatwavs
    @Heatwavs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So when editing black and white film scans how different is the process? do you just mess with the whites and blacks? or do you use the Mastin labs presets for that too? great video though!

      I've been scanning a lot of film lately, both color and black & white. Scanned film takes longer to adjust in Photoshop or Lightroom, because the scan exposures are never as perfect as I wish they were. It doesn't seem to matter if I scan the film as plain negative TIFFs, or let the scanner software do the inversion with some manual tweaking.

    • @Heatwavs
      @Heatwavs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken Mastri what scanner do you use? I know how to scan flat and can possibly help

    If you shoot film, then scan it into the computer, what is the benefit of shooting film in the first place? And if there is a benefit does it justify the cost of film, processing and the time involved?

    • @sebastianbille9010
      @sebastianbille9010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The process of shooting film is a lot of fun, especially if you develop it yourself :-) You get a very nice look with film and shooting a vintage camera is also a very different "user experience" compared to the sometimes quite complicated digital cameras. And for around 50 $ you can already get started with an ok film camera and a roll of b&w film :-)

    • @RickKnight

      Reproducing the specific look of the film was no doubt challenging. That said, the results are not hidden. A preset does nothing more than change settings in Lightroom. The is no "under the hood" invisible magic.
