I have been asked a lot about how I process my black and white images for my Instagram. In this video I show you the basic technique I use, using curves and HSL sliders within the Darkroom app, right on my iPhone. I will also show you how to get similar results on Snapseed for you Android users. You can also take these tips and use them high end editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop.
If you found it helpful, share it on.

A few of you have jumped on and pointed out that if you shoot in RAW, even if you are shooting BW you will retain all the colour info. Of course you're right, and I hope these tips help you. I think the question came from an Instagrammer who is likely shooting in jpg, so the answer is geared towards those who don't shoot RAW for Instagram. I'm actually one of them. I only have a 16GB iPhone which always seems to be too full, so shooting and editing jpg from my X100 is a workflow which works well for me. RAW is saved for my professional work.

Sean Tucker i have been using snapseed for like, 8 months, but never knew i could have so much control using colour sliders. Beautiful and easy explanation. Now i understand the hsl slider use. Thank you!

Sean Tucker well... You know in Fuji you can shoot and keep both raw and the bw JPEG.

Thanks for the tips, Sean! I love the creative color (or lack of) and compositions of your videos. The way you did the iPhone shots with the color, zoomed in view on the right and you yourself doing the actions on the left is just awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I keep going back to this video. Simply: THANK YOU!! I had the pleasure to start shooting with a real red filter... That really taught me how to handle it. So much easier now

Hi there .... great video. Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out to you but in SnapSeed you do have slider control on the black and white colour filters. Just choose the filter and then move your finger left or right on the image.
    Thanks again, great info!

    Another exceptional video thanks Sean!
Yes please, of course we'd love to see your color editing process!
Your incredible eye for composition is something I'd love to hear about too, how you go from walking around the streets to framing up - that part of the process. I've been walking around a lot looking for photo opportunities, even more since you suggested in a video to walk more and ride less - and sometimes I see something cool but can't seem to get the right fit in the frame like you would.
    Keep up the great work!

Really enjoying Sean's tutorials, very clear and concise explanations. I am looking to move on from iPhone photography to something that offers more opportunity for control and creativity. To that end have recently bought a GR3 which I am gradually (and I mean gradually) getting to grips with via TH-cam clips, especially Sean's. Any opinions on whether I should shoot RAW from the off or start out with JPEG and move to RAW as my abilities with the GR3 (hopefully) improve?
