Forging The Lowly Tent Peg

- In this video I show the steps I go through to make heavy duty tent pegs. I do these in large batches and I have made a bending jig to do the curved end quickly and consistently. I first put the point on one end and I do this in one heat. I keep 3 pieces in the fire at a time. As I finish one I put another in the fire to heat. If I put more than 3 pieces in the fire at a time they get too hot to hold with your bare hand. Once I have pointed all of them I let them cool before working on the other end. For the curved end I use the jig to make the shape then I do the final light clean up on the anvil. Each tent peg takes 2 heats to make.
Beckett’s Blacksmithing
At Beckett’s Blacksmithing I specialize in hand forged products and custom decorative ironwork. I use traditional tools and methods and heat my steel in a coal fired forge. In addition to this, I use modern tools such as welders, power tools, and gas torches to bring this ancient trade into the modern era.

Some days i find it therapeutic makin the simple stuff ......
Me too. I have a blacksmith friend who says when making a lot of the same thing "put it into robot mode"
Simple and effective.
I make and sell a lot of these at reenactments. I keep them really simple to keep them affordable as people buy these by the dozen.
After trying to make one at Kelly's station,I can concede it is alot harder than you make it look! Wow
I just watched that video yesterday! It looks like you guys had a lot of fun.
Hey , Beau. Beautiful shop and nice work. I viewed you first on Woodland Escape.
Thanks! I really like my workspace and I love old tools. I spend a lot of time in there so I made it my own. The Woodland Escape is a great channel. I have been on there several times and I'm sure I will be on it again at some point. Maybe I will go help him build the fort!
